TL;DR: In this article, a repeater is provided for use in a communications network which includes a plurality of transceivers, the repeater being bidirectional and allowing the interconnection of two segments of the network and also allowing longer communications networks to be used by matching or amplifying the signal level of an incoming information packet on one segment and coupling the matched or amplified signal to a succeeding segment.
Abstract: A repeater is provided for use in a communications network which includes a plurality of transceivers, the repeater being bidirectional and allowing the interconnection of two segments of the network and also allowing longer communications networks to be used by matching or amplifying the signal level of an incoming information packet on one segment and coupling the matched or amplified signal to a succeeding segment. The repeater has two ports that preferably utilize two semiconductor chips, each port having a carrier one-shot which detects the presence of an information packet arriving at that port. If an incoming port's one-shot is triggered by an incoming packet of information, the carrier one-shot for the repeating port and the incoming port transmitter are disabled. If the transceiver coupled to the repeating port detects a collision, this information is fed back to the incoming port which enables the incoming port transmitter thereby causing a collision on the incoming network segment which causes the termination of the transmission of the data packet by a using device already transmitting.
TL;DR: A study of the sequences of environmental change and human occupation in the vicinity of the Late Punic port of Carthage shows the two harbours of the city besieged by Scipio to be manmade and, in their fully developed form, dating only from the late fourth or third century bc as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Study of the sequences of environmental change and human occupation in the vicinity of the Late Punic port of Carthage shows the two harbours of the city besieged by Scipio to be man‐made and, in their fully developed form, dating only from the late fourth or third century bc There is further archaeological and historical evidence to suggest that the siting of a port in this area may be associated with a fourth‐century expansion of the urban area of Carthage and consequently have no relationship with the original harbour and habitation area of the Phoenician colony

Abstract: A programmable communications controller having a microcomputer system for buffering and controlling data communications between a communication processor and a plurality of input/output (I/O) ports of the microcomputer system to which ports/terminals can be connected directly, or indirectly, by digital data communication lines. The random access memory of the microcomputer system is divided into blocks of addresses of locations in which digital data can be stored. One of these blocks is designated as a service block. The service block in turn is divided into sectors, one for each I/O port to which is connected a communication line, for example. Each sector in the service block is adapted to have written into it and read from it data unique to the servicing of a given communication I/O port and the communication line or data terminals connected to that port. The microcomputer system of the controller is provided with an automatic addresser which is under the control of the microcomputer system. The automatic addresser steers memory commands addressed to the service block to the sector of the service block assigned to the communication I/O port being serviced by the microcomputer system at that time by substituting the address of the communication I/O port being serviced for the address applied to the sector address lines of the address bus by the microcomputer system. The automatic addresser also steers, in a similar manner, I/O commands from the microcomputer system to the communication I/O port being serviced by the microcomputer system at that time by substituting the address of the port being serviced for the address of whatever I/O port is applied to the address lines of the microcomputer system.

TL;DR: In this article, a double-acting piston is used to feed coal to a high-pressure gasifier system in a housing with a plurality of solids in-feeding ports and a single discharge port.
Abstract: This invention sets forth a double-acting piston, which carries a floating piston, and which is reciprocated in a housing, for feeding coal to a high pressure gasifier system. The housing has a plurality of solids (for instance: coal) in-feeding ports and a single discharge port, the latter port being in communication with a high pressure gasifier system. The double-acting piston sequentially and individually communicates each of the in-feeding ports with the discharge port. The floating piston both seals off the discharge port while each in-feeding port is receiving coal or the like, to prevent undue escape of gas from the gasifier system, and translates in the housing, following a discharge of coal or the like into the discharge port, to return gas which has been admitted into the housing back into the gasifier system.
TL;DR: The regulation and taxation of Irish trade under the Tudors have strong but neglected claims on the attention of the Irish historian as mentioned in this paper, and their obvious relevance to the economic activities of the country and, in particular, its seaborne trade will only incidentally be discussed here.
Abstract: The regulation and taxation of Irish trade under the Tudors have strong but neglected claims on the attention of the Irish historian. Their obvious relevance to the economic activities of the country and, in particular, its seaborne trade will only incidentally be discussed here. Dr Longfield’s pioneer account of Anglo-Irish trade has at length been followed up by more systematic explorations of her chief sources, the English and Welsh port books and customs accounts, and a definitive treatment of this sector is surely not far distant. Even here, however, where an enviable amount of solid information is available—despite their incompleteness and familiar problems of interpreting the port books—no one seems to have asked why Irish historians have to use non-Irish sources.
TL;DR: In this paper, a transhipping station is provided to reduce the time a ship is tied up in port, where work can proceed before the ship arrives and after the ship has left port.
Abstract: General cargo must be stowed differently when being transported by ships, or by railway waggons and trucks, respectively. To reduce the time a ship is tied up in port, a transhipping station is provided, where work can proceed before the ship arrives and after the ship has left port. This station is arranged so it is available along one side to railway waggons carried by special transport devices, remotely from railway tracks, at a second side is available to cargo-bigflats, suited for cargo handling on board ships, and possibly also, along a third side, being available to road trucks.

Abstract: The article describes the simulation program, the data used, and some port applications. Calculations are made for selecting the number of berths and the capacity of the system as a function of the vessel's waiting time. The examples illustrate the benefits of computer simulation to port planning.
TL;DR: Pross et al. as mentioned in this paper pointed out the problems that can arise when governments place development ahead of planning, when job creation is given priority over the impact of new industry on a community and its people.
Abstract: Although it has been around since 1975, this study is still timely and deserves the attention of anyone who is, or pretends to be, interested in the often misunderstood exercises of social planning and economic development. Paul Pross neatly pinpoints the problems that can arise when governments place development ahead of planning, when job creation is given priority over the impact of new industry on a community and its people. The Nova Scotia communities of Port Hawkesbury and Bridgewater, are both relatively small. The essential difference between them is that the former is an unsophisticated fishing community turned suddenly into a major ice-free deepwater port with the construction of the Canso Causeway and the latter is a more complex, diversified and sophisticated community with a recognized commercial and business centre.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an improved definition and ways to model and compute port capacity, where a mathematical model can be built to derive the dissipation period and storage level of the storage place.
Abstract: The thesis presents an improved definition and ways to model and compute port capacity. One appraoch uses an analogy to dam theory whereby a mathematical model can be built to derive the dissipation period and storage level of the storage place. Dissipation period here means the time ships are waiting for cargo 'dissipating' from the storage area lest overflow of the area should occur. This is one of the dependent relationships between ship-apron and storage links. The storage level is the average amount of cargo staying in the storage area. It gives the storage throughput simply by dividing it with the cargo dwelling time. By using queueing theory, clear definition of capacity and actual throughput can be obtained. The capacity is in fact the service rate of the link and actual throughput is the output rate of that link. To compute the service rate, a GERT model can be used to determine some of the influencing factors such as cycle time of each link and a ship longest hatch time. Further questions about dependency among links can be solved by using non-systematic-tandem-queue theory. Some measurement of the blocking behavior among those dependent links can then be derived. The queueing network can be analyzed by decomposing it into many tandem queues. The proposed model can be extended to deal with more general port case such as a multipurpose terminal. TL;DR: In this article, a case study of coastal erosion at Black Rock Point is described and its performance examined in the context of an integrated management system with many overlapping agencies and various ways to strengthen the system are proposed, based mainly on involving the public to assist with developing the management objectives.
Abstract: Port Phillip is an enclosed bay surrounded by some 3 million residents of the city of Melbourne, Australia. It has a complex management system with many overlapping agencies. The management system is described and its performance examined in the context of a case study of coastal erosion at Black Rock Point. The project was commenced with inadequate technical evaluation and without the establishment of explicit management objectives for the area. Various ways to strengthen the system are proposed, based mainly on involving the public to assist with developing the management objectives.
