Abstract: VLSI cell placement problem is known to be NP complete. A wide repertoire of heuristic algorithms exists in the literature for efficiently arranging the logic cells on a VLSI chip. The objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive survey of the various cell placement techniques, with emphasis on standard cell and macro placement. Five major algorithms for placement are discussed: simulated annealing, force-directed placement, min-cut placement, placement by numerical optimization, and evolution-based placement. The first two classes of algorithms owe their origin to physical laws, the third and fourth are analytical techniques, and the fifth class of algorithms is derived from biological phenomena. In each category, the basic algorithm is explained with appropriate examples. Also discussed are the different implementations done by researchers.

Abstract: Design and optimization of integrated circuits are essential to the creation of new semiconductor chips, and physical optimizations are becoming more prominent as a result of semiconductor scaling. Modern chip design has become so complex that it is largely performed by specialized software, which is frequently updated to address advances in semiconductor technologies and increased problem complexities. A user of such software needs a high-level understanding of the underlying mathematical models and algorithms. On the other hand, a developer of such software must have a keen understanding of computer science aspects, including algorithmic performance bottlenecks and how various algorithms operate and interact. VLSI Physical Design: From Graph Partitioning to Timing Closure introduces and compares algorithms that are used during the physical design phase of integrated-circuit design, wherein a geometric chip layout is produced starting from an abstract circuit design. The emphasis is on essential and fundamental techniques, ranging from hypergraph partitioning and circuit placement to timing closure.

In one embodiment, a method for design optimization using logical and physical information, includes receiving a behavioral description of an integrated circuit or a portion of an integrated circuit, optimizing placement of circuit elements in accordance with a first cost function, and optimizing logic of the circuit elements in accordance with a second cost function, in which the optimizing placement of the circuit elements and the optimizing logic of the circuit elements are performed concurrently. The method can further include optimizing routing in accordance with a third cost function, in which the optimizing routing, the optimizing placement of the circuit elements, and the optimizing logic of the circuit elements are performed concurrently.

Abstract: In this paper, we show how the introduction of a new primitive constraint over finite domains in the constraint logic programming system CHIP allows us to find very good solutions for a large class of very difficult scheduling and placement problems. Examples on the cumulative scheduling problem, the 10 jobs x 10 machines problem, the perfect square problem, the strip packing problem and the incomparable rectangles packing problem are given, showing the versatility, the efficiency and the broad range of application of this new constraint. We point out that no other existing approach can address simultaneously all the problems discussed in this paper.

Abstract: In this paper we introduce a new Simulated Annealing-based timing-driven placement algorithm for FPGAs. This paper has three main contributions. First, our algorithm employs a novel method of determining source-sink connection delays during placement. Second, we introduce a new cost function that trades off between wire-use and critical path delay, resulting in significant reductions in critical path delay without significant increases in wire-use. Finally, we combine connection-based and path-based timing-analysis to obtain an algorithm that has the low time-complexity of connection-based timing-driven placement, while obtaining the quality of path-based timing-driven placement.A comparison of our new algorithm to a well known non-timing-driven placement algorithm demonstrates that our algorithm is able to increase the post-place-and-route speed (using a full path-based timing-driven router and a realistic routing architecture) of 20 MCNC benchmark circuits by an average of 42%, while only increasing the minimum wiring requirements by an average of 5%.
