TL;DR: Social contagion is effective in isolated villages, spreading knowledge and behavior changes to two degrees of separation. Network targeting using friendship nomination is most effective in achieving widespread improvements.
Abstract: Certain people occupy topological positions within social networks that enhance their effectiveness at inducing spillovers. We mapped face-to-face networks among 24,702 people in 176 isolated villages in Honduras and randomly assigned villages to targeting methods, varying the fraction of households receiving a 22-month health education package and the method by which households were chosen (randomly versus using the friendship-nomination algorithm). We assessed 117 diverse knowledge, attitude, and practice outcomes. Friendship-nomination targeting reduced the number of households needed to attain specified levels of village-wide uptake. Knowledge spread more readily than behavior, and spillovers extended to two degrees of separation. Outcomes that were intrinsically easier to adopt also manifested greater spillovers. Network targeting using friendship nomination effectively promotes population-wide improvements in welfare through social contagion.
TL;DR: Women standard setters in the US perceive value in their board membership primarily in terms of professional expertise and ability to give back to the profession.
Abstract: SYNOPSIS Motivated by trends toward gender equality on standard-setting boards in the United States, this study interviews women members of the FASB, GASB, and EITF to understand the factors critical to their successful nomination and appointment. Semistructured interviews were conducted with women standard setters to root our understanding in their own experiences and perceptions. Value emerged as a generalizing theme. Participants perceived value to the board in nomination as associated with professional expertise and ties with professional societies. Most participants perceived value in giving back to the profession by serving as a voice for an important stakeholder group as a critical factor for acceptance. Women standard setters consistently downplay the idea that diversity, equity, and inclusion represent primary decision criteria for board membership. Instead, their reflections imply that it is up to the profession to implement practices that promote the advancement of the most competent professionals from all backgrounds. Data Availability: Anonymized interview data are available upon request to the authors and are subject to prior consent by participants to share. JEL Classifications: M41; M48.
TL;DR: This study examines the adoption and design of nomination committees in New Zealand national sport organizations, using critical realism and multitheoretical lens to identify drivers and change strategies, informing future governance structures and processes.
Abstract: Nomination committees (NCs) are a critical, yet under-researched, part of the good governance equation. This study contributes to baseline knowledge of NC adoption and design. Underpinned by critical realism, four national sports organization case studies explain the “why” and “how” of NC adoption through a multitheoretical lens. Change strategies are identified using Hampel et al.’s mechanisms (symbolic, relational, and material) approach to institutional (creation) work outcomes. Archer’s morphogenetic cycle helps to demonstrate the interplay between structure, culture, and agency in achieving the change with the study, providing a timely reminder of the power of morphostasis (inertia). The results are important for future NC design to better inform national sport organization NCs’ structures and processes (including case-appropriate balance between community and corporate logics in national sport organization governance re-configurations) and aid future evaluations of NC effectiveness. A critical realism multitheoretical and multicase approach is modeled for future sport management studies.
TL;DR: The TRSG is a valid and reliable teacher rating scale for nominating gifted children to education programs.
Abstract: Abstract Introduction: Intellectual giftedness is an important student characteristic that teachers need to take into consideration when designing education programs and providing educational support to these students. Effective nomination and identification are the basis for further education. In nominating gifted students for special educational programs, teachers play an important role by providing information about superior characteristics of students. The purpose of this study is to develop a teacher rating scale (TRSG) for nominating the children to gifted education programs. Methods: In order to develop a teacher rating scale (TRSG) for nominating the children to gifted education programs, the present study involved three stages: item generation, instrument application and validity-reliability analyses. One hundred sixty-nine teachers participated in the study. To ensure the validity of the scale, its content, construct and criterion-related validity were examined, and to ensure its reliability, its Cronbach alpha value was calculated. For content validity, three experts on gifted education examined the items and the whole scale in terms of successful intelligence theory. After their approval of the content, construct validity was examined by confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The result of the analysis supported the three-factor structure of the scale having 17 items. According to the results of the research, it has been established that the TRSG is a valid and reliable instrument, and it may be used to nominate gifted children based on the evaluations of the teachers. Discussion: Sternberg (2018) defined three components. According to the theory of Sternberg (2018), giftedness involves analytical, practical and creative intelligences, and they are associated not only with each other but also with a G factor. In the analysis, each item was classified under a component of successful intelligence theory and the statistical examinations supported the anticipated associations among the items and the factors. Limitations: The sample size of the teachers was small. The limitations of this study are the use of convenience sampling and the inclusion of only 169 teachers in the sample. Another limitation is rating bias. Conclusions: The results on the validity and reliability supported the notion that the scale is appropriate to be used for nomination purposes by teachers in gifted education programs. Its limited number of items, quick application, and simple scoring procedures make it advantageous for use in various contexts.
TL;DR: The Research Culture Awards at the University of Stirling identified key features of a positive research culture as teamwork, collegiality, sharing expertise, good role modelling, and good listening skills, through a manual frequency analysis of nominations.
Abstract: The Research Culture Awards were introduced as a way of celebrating people and groups who positively contribute towards enhancing the research environment at the University of Stirling. Colleagues can be nominated anonymously across multiple categories (including leadership, collaboration, mentoring), with nominees receiving their full nomination feedback: both this aspect, and the celebratory awards ceremony, seek to recognise the often-hidden contributions and efforts and create a shared understanding of what good research culture looks like for Stirling. First introduced in 2020, the awards have been held annually and have grown in popularity year on year. Exploring these nominations has allowed for an analysis of the key features of a positive research culture from a person-centric perspective, as felt at local level. The analysis was carried out using a manual frequency analysis of related words and phrases. The overarching results showed that teamwork/collegiality; sharing expertise; good role modelling and good listening skills were the attributes which were most appreciated in colleagues.
TL;DR: State parties actively switch between primaries and caucuses to influence presidential nominations, contradicting the narrative of parties becoming more democratic, and reveal a complex system driven by various motivations and strategies.
Abstract: Abstract Presidential nominations are generally perceived to be under the control of primary voters and caucus‐goers, with party organizations themselves largely powerless to steer outcomes. However, parties are highly active in the background, often switching contests between primaries and caucuses or vice versa in order to influence the nomination. Despite the popular narrative of parties becoming more internally democratic and abandoning caucuses, we find numerous instances of states moving from primaries to caucuses. We examine state party switches between caucuses and primaries between 1980 and 2024, testing various theories of party change. This approach yields few systematic conclusions. Therefore, we shift to examining contemporaneous coverage of state party switches using an inductive qualitative approach, revealing a complex and dynamic nomination system and a variety of reasons why state parties choose one form of contest over another. These findings catch state parties in the act of trying to control nomination contests in surprisingly overt ways.
TL;DR: This work performs a multivariate computational complexity analysis of Possible President for several classes of elections based on positional scoring rules and considers the following parameters: the size of the largest party, the number of parties, the number of voters and the number of voter types.
Abstract: Abstract Consider elections where the set of candidates is partitioned into parties, and each party must nominate exactly one candidate. The P ossible P resident problem asks whether some candidate of a given party can become the unique winner of the election for some nominations from other parties. We perform a multivariate computational complexity analysis of P ossible P resident for several classes of elections based on positional scoring rules. We consider the following parameters: the size of the largest party, the number of parties, the number of voters and the number of voter types. We provide a complete computational map of P ossible P resident in the sense that for each choice of the four possible parameters as (i) constant, (ii) parameter, or (iii) unbounded, we classify the computational complexity of the resulting problem as either polynomial-time solvable or -complete, and for parameterized versions as either fixed-parameter tractable or [1]-hard with respect to the parameters considered.
TL;DR: Incumbency significantly influences the choice of legislative candidates via primaries in Argentina, leading to a reduced likelihood of primary elections and an imbalanced distribution of resources within a party.
Abstract: How much influence does incumbency have on the way parties nominate candidates? I address this question in the context of Argentina, examining how political parties decide on candidate nomination methods for National Deputies. I argue that holding the governorship creates an imbalanced distribution of resources within a party, leading party factions to lean toward consensus in candidate selection and reducing the likelihood of choosing a primary election. Conversely, when a party lacks the governorship, its party leader may have a weaker influence in deterring primary elections. I also theorize the various situations and resources governors can employ to discourage primary elections, including potential coattail effects, the option of seeking reelection, control over the primaries' selectorate, and control of the electoral calendar. To test my expectations, I employ a regression discontinuity design, focusing on governors and those who finished as runners-up in lower chamber elections from 1985 to 2023.
TL;DR: Nomination is the act of giving a name to a work or performance, creating associations between performances without appeal to morphology.
Abstract: Abstract This chapter introduces the concept of musical nomination, the second of two key processes involved in the emergence of a standard from a network of musical performances. Nomination is the act of giving a work or a performance a name. Names create associations between performances, placing two distinct performances into a single network. Unlike musical replications, they make associations without any appeal to morphology. By considering replication and nomination in tandem, this chapter offers an analytic and philosophical framework for discussing the identity and individuation of musical works. The utility of this framework is in its ability to account for ambiguous cases such as contrafacts and revisions. Through two case studies—one on Charlie Parker’s performances and contrafacts of “Embraceable You,” and the other on John Coltrane’s “Impressions”—this chapter demonstrates that consideration of both replication nomination is required when accounting for the ontology of jazz standards.
TL;DR: Electoral reform in Indonesia has primarily focused on candidate-centric rules, with some revisions aimed at party-centric or semi-candidate-centric rules.
Abstract: Abstract Chapter 4 provides a comprehensive overview of Indonesia’s legislative and regional head electoral reforms from 1955 to 2020. Breaking with the convention of analyzing the democratic and authoritarian features of elections, the chapter instead considers their candidate-centric nature as a key defining feature. During this time period, Indonesia’s electoral rules have been revised several times. The chapter explains each reform process, why revisions were made, what new rules were adopted, and how these rules affected the party-centric or candidate-centric nature of subsequent elections. The analysis is based on the features of the electoral rules that offer incentives for the personal vote. Specifically, it focuses on the rules governing nomination procedures, voting, and the allocation of seats. Using this framework, the chapter identifies which elections operated under party-centric, semi-candidate-centric, and candidate-centric rules—a three-way classification that sets the stage for comparisons of campaigns.
TL;DR: This study examines ergonyms of beauty salons in Yaroslavl, Russia, analyzing their correspondence to the beauty sphere, attractiveness, and importance in consumer choice, revealing regional nomination peculiarities and common usage patterns among residents.
Abstract: The article considers regional peculiarities of nomination in the field of beauty salons' ergonyms on the example of names of the city of Yaroslavl. The questionnaire of the sociolinguistic survey included questions allowing to evaluate the ergonyms of beauty salons in the city of Yaroslavl according to the following criteria: the correspondence of the name to the sphere of activity of the organization; the degree of attractiveness of the studied ergonyms for respondents; the reasons for the attractiveness/unattractiveness of the ergonyms for respondents; options for transforming the nomination for the convenience of using it in speech; the degree of importance of the name of the establishment for the consumer of goods/services in the process of choosing an organization to visit. As a result of analyzing the respondents' answers, the following conclusions were obtained. The names of the majority of the studied ergonyms correspond to the beauty sphere. The most attractive name of a beauty salon for Yaroslavl residents is Beauty Territory, which is characterized by correspondence to the sphere of activity of the organization and «beauty of sound». The importance of the name of a beauty salon when choosing a place to visit cannot be determined unequivocally: the answers of the respondents were distributed approximately equally, with 13.2 % of respondents not paying attention to the name when choosing a beauty salon. When using ergonyms in speech, the townspeople most often use elliptization, univerbation, use of the identifier only.

TL;DR: This study examines the social bias of Slovak parliamentary elites since 2006, finding self-selection dominates candidate selection, with voters' influence limited, except in smaller parties where preference voting mitigates self-selection.
Abstract: Recent research has shown a trend towards more participatory nomination procedures in new as well as more established parties. However, in Slovakia most politically relevant parties have equally centralised, leadership dominated, and exclusive candidate selection modes. In the first part of the article I draw on the elite literature to investigate cross-party variation in the social bias of parliamentary elites since 2006. Using the 2023 election as a point of departure, I go on to assess how representative MPs are of their own voters, and why social bias varies across parties despite their similar selection modes. The analysis demonstrates that the impact of the selection mode as well as of voter preferences is contingent on the nomination practices of the individual parties. I found strong elements of self-selection in nearly all parties: the members of the presidium nominated themselves, and the composition of the parliamentary elites thus to a considerable extent reflects who the presidium members are. The influence of the voters is limited, because they tend to confirm the priorities of the selectorates; however, in the case of the four smallest parties in 2023, preference voting to some extent mitigated the effect of self-selection. The main drivers of preference voting were the idiosyncratic nomination practice of Ordinary People, and the presence of organised groups and parties on the list (informal alliances).
TL;DR: This study examines metaphorical expressions of war in Polish journalistic texts, specifically in "Polityka" magazine, analyzing grammatical and semantic aspects to understand linguistic nomination of war and its impact on language users' conceptualization of conflict.
Abstract: The article deals with the metaphorical nomination of war characteristics, i.e. linguistic (grammatical and semantic) aspects of metaphorical expressions containing the noun ‘war’ in journalistic texts on the Russian-Ukrainian war of 2022-2023. Based on a corpus consisting of constructions extracted from articles published in the weekly magazine “Polityka”, the author describes these expressions in terms of the grammatical properties of the collocate, the case form of the noun ‘war’, as well as aspects of metaphorical nomination. The research analysis, leads, inter alia, to the conclusion that the linguistic nomination of war is so diverse that it is impossible to claim, in the spirit of linguistic determinism, that the existing schemes of the linguistic (lexical and phrasal) nomination of war influence the awareness of language users and the culturally shaped mental conceptualization of war.
Abstract: In his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination to be President of the United States, Donald J. Trump presented the audience with a stark world of good vs. evil, chaos vs. stability. We use Burke's concept good terms and evil terms to rhetorically analyze the acceptance speech. While Trump used specific references to real events in his use of good and evil terms, his promises for stability over chaos are indefinite terms, which allowed a divided Republican Party to unite behind his candidacy. However, governance has required concrete concepts to solve real world issues.
TL;DR: This study examines how victimhood is constructed in Bojayá, Colombia, where a 2002 massacre led to social trauma and suffering, enabling victims to acquire political agency and recognition as subjects through the nomination of victimhood, informed by Lacanian psychoanalysis.
Abstract: Victims have acquired an unprecedented social and political legitimacy in the contemporary world. In light of this phenomenon and the debates it has generated in the social and human sciences, in this article we analyze how victimhood is constructed in Bojayá, a municipality on the Colombian Pacific coast, where more than eighty people were massacred in 2002 during a combat between the FARC-EP (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia-Ejército del Pueblo) and the AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia). Supported by interviews and field data, we argue that the social trauma of the massacre and suffering are the cause of political agency of the victims and the means for becoming political subjects. Based on conceptual categories coming from Lacanian psychoanalysis, we conclude that the nomination of victim in Bojayá is fundamental for its inhabitants –previously invisible– so that they can be recognized by the Other of the nation and the international scene.

Abstract: This study examines whether the effectiveness of board subcommittees is associated with director attrition and the attraction of new directors to boards. Using a sample of firms listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, we find that nomination and remuneration committee effectiveness is inversely associated with director attrition and positively related to new external directors joining boards. The results suggest the contribution of these subcommittees to improve corporate governance by strengthening the board's human capital through recruitment and retention of suitable talent. Furthermore, the influence of subcommittee effectiveness on attrition (attraction) is more pronounced in firms experiencing higher levels of information asymmetry, weaker governance quality and poorer performance. The results are robust to tests with alternative variables, entropy balanced matching, and additional controls. Overall, our findings show that improved governance through effective subcommittees helps maintain and enhance the human capital of boards.
Abstract: "Political party" or "party", when used in omnibus election code of the Philippines, means an organized group of persons pursuing the same ideology, political ideas or platforms of government and includes its branches and divisions. To acquire juridical personality, quality it for subsequent accreditation, and to entitle it to the rights and privileges granted to political parties, a political party shall first be duly registered with the Commission. Any registered political party that, singly or in coalition with others, fails to obtain at least ten percent of the votes cast in the constituency in which it nominated and supported a candidate or candidates in the election next following its registration shall, after notice have forfeited such status as a registered political party in such constituency. Regarding the Registration any organized group of persons seeking registration as a national or regional political party may file with the Commission a verified petition attaching thereto its constitution and by-laws, platform or program of government and such other relevant information as may be required by the Commission. The Commission shall, after due notice and hearing, resolve the petition within ten days from the date it is submitted for decision. No religious sect shall be registered as a political party and no political party which seeks to achieve its goal through violence shall be entitled to accreditation. The petition for registration or accreditation by the Commission shall require publication of the petition for registration or accreditation in at least three newspapers of general circulation and shall, after due notice and hearing, resolve the petition within fifteen days from the date it is submitted for decision. [1] Accordingly the Sartori’s definition of political parties applies in merely in the Republic of the Philippines where in the other hand party institutionalization process of the country followed a pre-defined path since 1940 for the sanctity of the ballot. TL;DR: This study identifies festival nominations in Voronezh and Voronezh Oblast as a comprehensive marker of regional identity, reflecting cultural and territorial identities, including local, city, national, and global aspects, through linguistic analysis.

TL;DR: This study examines media agenda in Malaysian politics during the 14th General Election, analyzing news reporting patterns on RTM radio stations, finding consistent neutrality with a slight pro-Barisan Nasional bias and media-related issues as a secondary focus.
Abstract: The media and communication technologies have changed media consumption for good, and traditional media publishers are struggling to integrate their businesses using communication technologies. However, when fake news is increasingly prevalent on social media, where everyone can be the prosumer-produce and consume news, the people seek to verify the facts through different media, and traditional media have therefore made a comeback. This research paper attempts to answer "What are the issues reported by the media". This study provides findings made during the 14th General Election campaigning period on the political issues reported by traditional media, in this case, radio. This study used a purposive sampling method, with the sample drawn from nomination day to the voting day (April 28 – May 9, 2018); a total of 12 days. The radio stations chosen for this study are operated by a national broadcasterRadio Television Malaysia (RTM), which were Nasional FM (95.3 MHz), Ai FM (89.3 MHz) and Traxx FM (100.1 MHz). The findings showed that the news reporting patterns among the three radio stations were consistent throughout the examination period. Most of the news reported by the three radio channels were neutral but 10 RTM reports were still pro-Barisan Nasional (BN), which was the leading slant of the reports ahead of anti-PKR ones. Media-related issues (false news, imbalance news, inaccurate information) were received the second higher-ranked of issues reported by the radio channels.
