TL;DR: In this paper , the impact of board committee indexes on the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure, and accounting-and market-based performance measures of multinational enterprises (MNEs) was examined.
Abstract: The study examines the impact of board committee indexes on the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure, and accounting- and market-based performance measures of multinational enterprises (MNEs). Using quantile regression analysis and a large balanced panel data of 500 multinational companies operating in 40 countries from 2009 to 2019 (i.e., 5500 firm-year observations), we uncovered the following significant associations: (i) a positive relationship between ESG disclosure and accounting performance indicators for large-sized MNEs, but this relationship is counteracted by the negative influence of the audit and sustainability committee indexes; (ii) the association between market-based performance outcomes and ESG disclosure is positively affected by the compensation, nomination, and sustainability committee indexes, while it is negatively influenced by the audit committee index; (iii) the combined board committee index has varying impacts on the connection between the components of ESG disclosure, and accounting and market-relevant performance metrics for different sizes of MNEs; and (iv) while the audit and sustainability committee indexes exert negative effects on the relationship between the components of ESG disclosure and performance measures, these effects are countered by the positive moderating impacts of the compensation and nomination committee indexes. The study concludes by discussing the policy implications of these results.
TL;DR: In this article , the authors investigated whether NC characteristics could serve as key attributes for reducing environmental, social and governance disputes and whether NC composition affects the appointment of ESG-friendly directors to the board.
Abstract:
Purpose
Based on the agency and resource dependence theories, this study aims to investigate whether nomination committee (NC) characteristics could serve as key attributes for reducing environmental, social and governance (ESG) disputes and whether NC composition affects the appointment of ESG-friendly directors to the board.
Design/methodology/approach
This study focuses on a sample of 30 global systemically important banks from 2015 to 2021. The authors estimate panel data models with fixed effects, clustering heteroskedastic standard errors at the bank level to account for the serial correlation of the dependent variables for each bank.
Findings
Banks’ exposure to ESG controversies can be reduced when NC members have specific skills, in particular when at least one member of this committee also belongs to the sustainability committee and is a foreign director. Moreover, banks’ ESG disputes decrease when the NC members are younger, while the share of independent NC members has a negative impact. Finally, a positive influence of NC composition and its members’ features as well as the appointment of ESG-friendly directors on the board is found.
Originality/value
The findings are particularly useful during periods such as the current one, when there is growing attention to both banks’ corporate governance, the subcommittees’ role and functioning and social and environmental issues. This study shows that the NC is important in reducing the likelihood of banks incurring ESG disputes and in appointing more ESG-friendly directors. NC effective functioning and its members’ qualities serve as a key attribute for fulfilling objective assessment and improving board effectiveness.
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors provided researchers and practitioners with a vocabulary to understand and address issues of representation in board composition in sport federations, and provided insights into the meaning and implications of four distinct views of representation, along with an interpretation of potential responses to board-shaping instruments.
Abstract: Contemporary sport governance contexts are marked by a trend towards efficiency-based board composition and an increasing use of instruments aimed to (re)shape boards. Yet, democratic governance is integral to many countries’ sport systems, and research tells us that representation still matters in sport governance. Considering this, the aim with this paper is to provide researchers and practitioners with a vocabulary to understand and address issues of representation in board composition. The paper builds on interviews with nomination committee representatives of 62 Swedish national sport federations (NSFs). The analysis provides insights into the meaning and implications of four distinct views of representation, along with an interpretation of potential responses to board-shaping instruments engendered by these views.
TL;DR: In this article , the authors examined the interaction effect of the committee's effectiveness on the board of directors' characteristics and firm performance (measured by return on assets and earnings per share).
Abstract: This study aimed to examine the interaction effect of the nomination committee’s effectiveness on the board of directors’ characteristics and firm performance (measured by return on assets and earnings per share). The nomination committee was scored for committee separation, size, independence, meeting frequency, and the number of female directors. The study selected all listed firms on the Bahrain Bourse for two years, 2020 and 2021, using ordinary least-squares regression to examine the relationship. The results showed that the interaction of the nomination committee with some characteristics of the board of directors had a significant impact on firm performance. With the interaction of the nomination committee, board meeting frequency became significantly positively associated with firm performance as measured by return on assets and earnings per share, as opposed to the insignificant results found in the direct relationship. Similarly, with the interaction of the nomination committee, the number of female directors became more significantly positively associated with firm performance using the measurement of return on assets, while it became significantly positively associated with firm performance using earnings per share, compared to an insignificant positive impact found in the direct relationship. The results show that there is a need to re-evaluate the role of the board of directors and strengthen its effectiveness. This study is the first to alert policymakers, businesses and their stakeholders, and researchers to the significance of having an effective nomination committee, which could play an important role in enhancing the board of directors’ effectiveness and hence firm performance. It makes a significant contribution to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the interaction impact of NC (as a score) on BOD characteristics and firm performance.
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors examined the usefulness of the Johari window for the Cultural Heritage Planning Process (CHP) and proposed five newly defined epistemological domains to conceptualize overlapping levels of knowledge and ownership.
Abstract: The standard heritage planning process follows the trajectory of identification, nomination, evaluation, listing and protection. The epistemology of the nominations and valuations is only rarely, if ever, examined. The Johari window was developed by the psychologists Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham as a tool to examine group dynamics, in particular an individual’s position in, and their relationship and interactions with others in a group. This paper examines the usefulness of the Johari window for the Cultural Heritage Planning Process. Based on the interrelationship of what oneself and others know about each other and are prepared to divulge, the Johari window allows to conceptualize overlapping levels of knowledge and ownership within five newly defined epistemological domains. It also serves as an analytical tool to systematically query the heritage universe of a community and thereby examine the composition and comprehensiveness of heritage registers as well as nominations that have been put forward.

TL;DR: In this paper , the bias of Riau Pos in order to influence the actor's reputation in the nomination for Governor of RIAU for 2024-2029 was analyzed through a literature review and the listening technique.
Abstract: This study intends to discover the bias of Riau Pos in order to influence the actor's reputation in the nomination for Governor of Riau for 2024–2029. Through the lens of Faicrlough's text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice, partisanship in the construction of reputation in news in the mass media is analyzed. The research data was gathered using a literature review and the listening technique. Fairclough's paradigm of critical discourse analysis was used to analyze the research data utilizing a comparable methodology. This study demonstrates that local political actors, such as Syamsuar, Edy Natar Nasution, Syamsurizal, Alfedri, Muhammad Adil, Abdul Wahid, and Achmad, have been influenced by the news in the Riau Pos concerning the 2024 Riau Governor election. Syamsuar, who is the Governor of Riau as well as the Chairman of the Regional Leadership Council Golkar Riau, appears to be a prominent figure in the published news. In addition to this, the media narrative has also contributed to Syamsuar's political image.
TL;DR: In this article , a decision support system using the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method was used to help determine the recipients of social assistance wich provided by the government with the aim to improve their standard of living.
Abstract: This research is about a decision support system using the Simple Additive Weighting method to help determine the recipients of social assistance wich provided by the government with the aim to improve their standard of living. Wedomartani Village has a fairly large area with a large population. The problem is that the number of potential beneficiaries is not proportional to the available social assistance quota, so it is necessary to select recipients based on certain criteria to fit the target. The Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method has been used to determine the nomination of candidates for social assistance. From the results of data processing for prospective recipients of Bantuan Langsung Tunai Dana Desa (BLT-DD) in 2020, If the largest 25 are taken from it, it shows that the distribution of the poverty level of the population in the area is not evenly distributed, so a policy made by the sub-district government is needed for more specific poverty reduction.
TL;DR: In this article , the effects of board size and board independence, as well as the interaction effect between board independence and CEOs/CFOs on corporate governance disclosure practices were examined.
Abstract: Synopsis The research problem This study examines the effects of board size and board independence, as well as the interaction effect between board independence and CEOs/CFOs on corporate governance disclosure practices. Motivation Despite corporate governance (CG) reforms around the world, research evidence indicates that the levels of corporate governance disclosures (CGDs) in developing countries remain poor due to weak institutions and corporate governance systems. In particular, the corporate boards as a key mechanism of CG and the board nomination processes in East Africa remain largely opaque and dominated by majority shareholders, chief executive officers, and chief finance officers (CEOs/CFOs), giving rise to opportunistic behaviors that may be detrimental to firm value. The distinctive feature of the board nomination process/CG system in East Africa has implications for monitoring and corporate governance disclosure practices and compliance and calls for systematic research in this under-explored subject. Hypotheses H1: The association between board size and corporate governance disclosure will be positive. H2: The association between board independence and corporate governance disclosure will be positive. H3a: The presence of the CEO on the nomination/remuneration committee will negatively moderate the relationship between board independence and corporate governance disclosure. H3b: The presence of the CFO on the nomination/remuneration committee will negatively moderate the relationship between board independence and corporate governance disclosure. H3c: The presence of the CEO and CFO on the nomination/remuneration committee will negatively moderate the relationship between board independence and corporate governance disclosure. Target population Stakeholders including firm managers, practitioners, regulatory authorities, policymakers, and investors. Adopted methodology Ordinary least squares (OLS), fixed-effects model, and system generalized method of moments (GMM). Analyses Using a large and hand-collected dataset comprising 1000 firm-year observations from 2007 to 2017 in East Africa, this study develops a corporate governance disclosure index (CGDI) of East Africa consisting of 164 provisions. To test our hypotheses, this study adopts three analytical approaches, namely OLS and fixed-effects (FE) regressions and the two-stage system GMM to address the endogeneity concerns. Findings We find that large boards and independent directors are associated with greater disclosure of CG information. Our analysis suggests that CEO/CFO power negatively moderates the link between board independence and corporate governance disclosure, unlike those environments with stronger institutions and corporate governance systems. Thus, firms whose CEO and CFO are involved in remuneration or nomination committees disclose less CG information. The combined effect of the CEO and CFO on selection and remuneration committees and an independent board in reducing corporate disclosure appears more pronounced for the post-financial crisis period compared with the crisis period.
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors focus on the preparation and participation of Indonesian female candidates in the Riau Archipelago Province's 2024 political contest, focusing on the primary reason why women participate in political parties and legislative seats at such a low rate.
Abstract: : This article focuses on the preparation and participation of Indonesian female candidates in the Riau Archipelago Province's 2024 political contest. Why women participate in political parties and legislative seats at such a low rate is a big question. The Mix Method research to find the best results elaboration. In-depth interviews were conducted with six political party leaders, and 120 questionnaires were distributed to each party. Each party was given 20 questionnaires containing the same questions. The traditional political environment is still the main reason for women's participation, and this will also be the case in the 2024 elections. The primary reason is their need for more involvement in election recruitment, nomination, and candidacy. The emphasis is very much on the patriarchal system, and women's families and personal environments are inadequate. Aside from that, there is a limit: the stigma of women in politics is only significant as a background player. Existing regulations are formalities; each party has its own method of conditioning existing regulations. There must be firmness in the system of 30% quotas for women, or even better, a strategic way for them to want to participate in the elections of 2024 and beyond.
TL;DR: In this paper , a detailed comparative study of the nine specific vineyard cultural landscapes included in the World Heritage List has been conducted based on three primary sources: the Nomination Files, the Advisory Bodies Evaluations and the minutes of the world heritage committee meetings with the decisions to inscribe or not to INScribe the sites.
Abstract: ABSTRACT Vineyard landscapes are an excellent example of cultural landscapes that represent the interactions between nature and culture, providing many of them with a unique heritage value. This study takes a critical approach to the nomination processes of World Heritage vineyard landscapes, focusing on the practical application of the eligibility criteria and the key concepts of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV), authenticity and integrity. A detailed comparative study of the nine specific vineyard cultural landscapes included in the World Heritage List has been conducted based on three primary sources: the Nomination Files, the Advisory Bodies Evaluations and the minutes of the World Heritage Committee meetings with the decisions to inscribe or not to inscribe the sites. A systematic analysis of the many recommendations issued by ICOMOS to the States Parties and their comparison with the Committee’s decisions has provided insight into the evolution of perspectives. In turn, these have given rise to a discussion regarding several aspects: inscription categories, names and surface areas of the properties, duration of the process, OUV and attributes that embody said value, authenticity and integrity, boundaries and management plans. Thus, this paper will shine a light on the difficult subject of identifying outstanding heritage specificities and linking OUV to the territorial conservation and management of living rural landscapes.
TL;DR: Child penalties exist in politics, with mothers being less likely to secure elected office after their first child is born.
Abstract: Abstract Women tend to experience a substantial decline in their labour income after their first child is born, while men do not. Do such ‘child penalties’ also exist in the political arena? Using comprehensive administrative data from Norway, we find that women are less likely than men to secure elected office after their first child is born. The effects already manifest from the nomination stage, where mothers receive less favourable rankings on party lists relative to comparable fathers. This paper broadens our understanding of a fundamental social issue in political representation and demonstrates how motherhood even affects positively selected women.
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors propose a model-less ranking method when multiple representations of the data are available, and evaluate the method in very realistic settings and demonstrate that it is preferred to the existing techniques that handle distance-based ranking.
TL;DR: Discursive strategies utilized in King Abdullah II's speeches during the COVID-19 pandemic in addressing the nation include nomination, prediction, argumentation, perspectivization, and intensification, and mitigation strategies.
Abstract: While several researchers have investigated the linguistic features of Presidential and Royal speeches, there is a gap in the literature regarding discursive strategies used in the speeches of Presidents and Monarchs during crises. The study aims at identifying the main discursive strategies used by His Majesty King Abdullah II in addressing Jordanians during COVID-19. Therefore, the study adopted the Positive Discourse Analysis approach (PDA) to investigate the usage of discursive strategies in three speeches of King Abdullah II during COVID-19. The study revealed that the King used nomination, prediction, argumentation, perspectivization and intensification, and mitigation strategies in appeasing Jordanians and conveying his directives to the government regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
TL;DR: In this article , the authors determined the moderating effects of female boards of directors on the relationship between board characteristics and the performance of banks in Nigeria using a cross-sectional survey sample of 121 respondents from state-and privately-owned banks.
Abstract: Improved corporate governance practices of banks are viewed as a key mechanism for better performance of banks. Despite the numerous diversification efforts of the Nigerian bank regulators, bank performance remains poor. The study determines the moderating effects of female boards of directors on the relationship between board characteristics and the performance of banks in Nigeria. The quantitative explanatory design utilised a cross-sectional survey sample of 121 respondents from 24 state- and privately-owned banks. Regression analyses were used to examine the effects among the variables. The results showed that board size and board committees (audit, remuneration, and nomination) are positively and significantly related to bank performance. On the contrary, board independence is negatively and significantly related to bank performance. The result revealed that female representation does not have a moderating effect on the relationship between each board size, board independence, and bank performance. Female representation negatively and significantly moderated the relationship between each audit and remuneration committee and bank performance. However, female representation positively and significantly moderated the relationship between nomination committees and bank performance. Our findings shed light on the role of the mandatory policy of including women on banks’ boards and the female board members’ moderating role between the nomination, audit and remuneration committees on one hand and the bank performance on the other
TL;DR: In this paper , a case study of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India is presented, focusing on the nature of informal politics and institutions that over-write and complicate the candidate selection process, and the challenges of identifying the hidden effects of these parallel processes on the competition for official party nominations.
Abstract: ABSTRACT This article analyses the theoretical and methodological challenges of researching candidate selection and party nomination practices in Indian politics using a case study of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India. It focuses on the nature of informal politics and institutions that over-write and complicate the candidate selection process, and on the challenges of identifying the hidden effects of these parallel processes on the competition for official party nominations. The article discusses the complex and protracted nature of internal party negotiations over candidate short-lists and how these layered and unseen strains at the final stages of selection impact the openness and transparency of the process in the BJP. The findings indicate that unofficial lobbying for party tickets is an important but overlooked informal institution that impacts the process in significant ways and deters inclusion in the party selection processes.
TL;DR: According to the UNESCO nomination, 12 types of cultural landscapes are known in the world, according to which Europe stands out. as discussed by the authors discusses the definition of cultural landscape, its essence, types and their geographical features.
Abstract: AbstractThe natural diversity of Georgia is unique in the world, especially—in the subtropical and temperate zones. More than seven dozen natural landscapes have been created here, starting in the humid subtropical or semi-fertile wooded forests, ending in wetlands and semi-wetlands landscapes. Georgia, despite its small territory, is distinguished by the diversity of the living world, as well as natural and cultural landscapes. Such diversity makes it difficult to study the geographical-ecological (geo-ecological) features of the country, to fully reveal the cultural modifications of the landscapes. According to the UNESCO nomination, 12 types of cultural landscapes are known in the world. Their total number reaches 120, according to which Europe stands out. Almost half of the cultural landscapes are represented here. Among the countries in the world, France and Italy lead in the number of cultural landscapes (8–8 units), followed by Great Britain, Germany, China (5–5 units), Portugal and Spain (4–4 cultural landscapes). No cultural landscape has been created in Georgia under UNESCO status. However, Georgia is known in the world as the homeland of wine and wheat, a country of ancient culture and traditions, an attractive geographical area with natural and landscape diversity. The article discusses the definition of cultural landscape, its essence, types and their geographical features. There are also three areas for cultural landscape nomination in Georgia, which differ in scale (size).KeywordsCultural landscapeDeterminationGeographyAgro-landscapesHuman activity
TL;DR: This paper found that potential candidates and primary voters respond to general election incentives but do not find clear evidence for contributors or the winnowing process, which implies that actors in the invisible primary either place higher value on in-party candidate ideology or have different beliefs about the general election than do primary voters.
Abstract: Previous research finds that nominating more centrist candidates increases vote share and win probability in congressional general elections. Yet party primary elections often nominate non-centrist candidates, increasing polarization between the American parties. We develop a model of choice in nomination politics that shows when and how actors respond to incentives of the general election. We then combine 200 million contribution records with data on 22,400 candidates in 7100 House primary elections from 1980 through 2016. We find that potential candidates and primary voters respond to general election incentives but do not find clear evidence for contributors or the winnowing process. Connecting these results back to our model, this implies that actors in the invisible primary either place higher value on in-party candidate ideology or have different beliefs about the general election than do primary voters. Our evidence adds to a body of research that suggests primary voters are a larger moderating force than elites in American party politics.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors argue that intra-party competition occurs in other stages of the electoral cycle than elections and involves the strategic behaviour of more actors than electoral candidates, and they present an original conceptual model that introduces a multi-stage and multi-actor perspective on intraparty competition.
Abstract: In contemporary representative democracies, political competition is not only taking place between political parties but also within parties. Hitherto, research on such intra-party competition has been mostly focused on the electoral dimension, mainly looking at the distribution of preference votes among co-partisans running on the same party list. In this introduction to our symposium on intra-party competition, we argue that intra-party competition occurs in other stages of the electoral cycle than elections and involves the strategic behaviour of more actors than electoral candidates. We present an original conceptual model that introduces a multi-stage and multi-actor perspective on intra-party competition, including three stages (the nomination stage, the electoral stage and the post-electoral stage) and three key actors (voters, politicians and parties). Based on our novel conceptual model, we provide examples of strategic behaviour of each actor in each of the stages. We further introduce each contribution of this symposium and present how each contribution relates to our multi-stage and multi-actor model of intra-party competition.
TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated the relationship between archaeological tourism, UNESCO World Heritage designation, and the social value attached to archaeological sites in China and provided novel insights into such connections by examining the impact of archaeological tourism on the social values that local communities place on archaeological sites that are in the process of becoming World Heritage Sites.
Abstract: This article investigates the relationship between archaeological tourism, UNESCO World Heritage designation, and the social value attached to archaeological sites in China. It aims to provide novel insights into such connections by examining the impact of archaeological tourism on the social values that local communities place on archaeological sites that are in the process of becoming World Heritage Sites. In recent decades, the increasing commercialization of archaeological sites for tourism, combined with the growing influence of the World Heritage listing process, has had a significant impact on the lives of communities in close proximity to archaeological sites. One way to comprehend such an effect is to examine changes in the social values assigned to those sites by their local residents. This is due to the ability of tourism development to (re)create and modify such values attributed to archaeological sites by changing their function, capacity, quality, and meaning. The World Heritage listing process, particularly during the pre-nomination period, plays an important role in shaping the tourist transformation of these sites in preparation for World Heritage inscription. Against this backdrop, this article focuses on two archaeological sites that have recently obtained the World Heritage status: the Daming Palace archaeological site and the Huashan rock art area. By applying ethnographic approaches, the article illustrates the complex influence of tourism development and the World Heritage Convention on contemporary Chinese society, in order to encourage further reflection on the existing management and development mechanisms of archaeological sites in China and around the world.
TL;DR: Italy experienced significant political developments in 2022, including the rise of the far-right party Brothers of Italy and the nomination of the first female Prime Minister.
Abstract: Abstract The year 2022 was (again) a year of intense political change in Italy. The President of the Republic was (re)elected in January, Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigned in July, and new elections were held in September, amidst energy and economic crises, growing inflation and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The electoral victory of the centre‐right coalition, and in particular the success of Brothers of Italy, not only marked the rise to power of a prominent European far‐right party but also led to the nomination of the first female Prime Minister of the Italian Republic. The fall of Draghi's government and the formation of the first Meloni Cabinet raised questions about Italy's relationship with EU institutions, NATO and the transatlantic partnership.
TL;DR: In this article , a questionnaire was sent to shareholders, board members, and NC members of the 300 largest companies in Iceland and a total of 138 responses were received, and the results show that stakeholders believe it is important to decide upon an NC's composition prior to electing its members.
Abstract: Sustainability is a critical issue for businesses today, and corporate boards and nomination committees play a vital role in promoting sustainable practices within organizations. Nomination Committees (NCs) have become important mechanisms for what has been coined as good or sustainable governance. Stakeholders, however, have different opinions on the merits of these committees. Amongst other things, there is disagreement about whom to select for NCs and the criteria for selection. The composition of NCs can influence board nominations and determine whether the necessary knowledge and skills reside within a board to deal with sustainability and good corporate governance. The aim of this research is to provide insights into stakeholders’ perspectives on what matters when profiling nomination committees’ members. The literature on NCs is underdeveloped, and this research importantly addresses the issue by interviewing 13 individuals who are either shareholders, board members of listed companies, or members of NCs. Additionally, a questionnaire was sent to shareholders, board members, and NC members of the 300 largest companies in Iceland. A total of 138 responses were received. The results show that stakeholders believe it is important to decide upon an NC’s composition prior to electing its members. NC members should have either management or board membership experience. Diversity within the committees is also seen to be important, as it can influence diversity and inclusion overall at the board level. These research results provide important insights and understanding for shareholders and boards of directors when composing nomination committees.
TL;DR: Yogyakarta's philosophical axis is a landmark in the city's urban landscape. It echoes the city's inclusion in the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List. The axis is grounded in Hamengkubuwono I's ideas and its linkages with the three nomination criteria form the context of the philosophical axis in the presence of the Kingdom.
Abstract: The philosophical axis of Yogyakarta became the landmark of its urban landscape. The existence of the axis echoed to the surface since its inclusion in UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List. This article seeks to find the background of the philosophical axis establishment from Hamengkubuwono I’s ideas. Furthermore, it attempts to build linkages between three nomination criteria filled by the axis to form the context of the philosophical axis in the presence of the Kingdom. This research uses a qualitative method and a descriptive approach. The data collected by literature study consists of internet articles, books, journals, and primary sources by an interview with Yogyakarta's philosophical axis bodies. It argues that the linkages between three nomination criteria happened from the mixed readings of Hamengkubuwono I combined with his Javanese background. Those versatile sources of readings make the identity of Yogyakarta the Islamic sultanate with a mixture of Islam, Hindu, and Java identities.
TL;DR: In this article , the authors argue that the patriarchal nature of politics and culture controls the supply and demand-side factors of candidate selection and discriminates against female candidates to vie in the general constituency.
Abstract: The number of female MPs elected by direct vote in Bangladesh's Parliament is abysmally low due to the low level of female candidates in the parliamentary elections. This study addresses the underrepresentation of female candidates in the election following the supply- and demand-side model of Norris and Lovenduski. We focus on the continuing patriarchal social and political culture, dynastic politics, campaign funding, and violence as supply-side factors and political parties and nominations, quotas/reserved seats, and rule compliance as demand-side factors that affect the candidate nomination process in Bangladesh. The article is based on semi-structured interviews with female and male MPs of the Bangladesh Parliament and aspirant female politicians who hold different party positions. The study argues that the patriarchal nature of politics and culture controls the supply and demand-side factors of candidate selection and discriminates against female candidates to vie in the general constituencies.
TL;DR: The implementation of sharia and corporate governance positively impacts the financial performance of Islamic banks in Southeast Asia. Variables related to Islamic corporate governance are more influential in determining the financial performance of Islamic banks than sharia variables.
Abstract: This study aims to determine the effect of the implementation of sharia and corporate governance on the performance of Islamic banks in Southeast Asia. This study uses a collection of data collected manually on sharia and corporate governance variables from 25 Islamic banks from 5 Southeast Asian countries for the period 2014-2020. The types of statistical analysis carried out are descriptive statistics, panel data regression, and static regression tests. The results of this study reveal that the variables related to Islamic corporate governance are more influential in determining the financial performance of Islamic banks. The regression results of the sharia supervisory board, board of directors meetings, board of commissioners meetings, remuneration and nomination committees, and risk monitoring committees of firm size have a positive effect on increasing financial performance, while audit committees and company age do not have a positive effect on increasing financial performance. This study enriches the understanding of Islamic corporate governance, corporate governance and the financial performance of Islamic banks in Southeast Asia

Abstract: This article presents a methodology for intelligence development based on the premise of emotive units at the lexical-phraseological level and the emotive content of professional-oriented texts. The methodology of emotional intelligence development for future English language teachers is based on the provisions of the emotional-conceptual approach which includes three stages of teaching: nomination, description and expression of emotions by means of a foreign language. Each stage involves four levels of teaching: presentation, practice, production and assessment. The content of emotional intelligence in ELT includes: subject, procedure and outcome components. Our significant achievements are qualitative and quantitative indicators of the general communicative and professional-communicative aspects of students’ emotional intelligence development. The purpose of the article is to create a scientifically-based methodology for the emotional intelligence development of future foreign language teachers in the process of professionally-oriented education. The objectives of the article are to: substantiate the structural-content and functional characteristics of emotional intelligence; create a methodology for emotional intelligence development in foreign language teachers and define qualitative and quantitative indicators of emotional intelligence development.
