Management interface for a system that provides automated, real-time, continuous data protection

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a data management system that protects data into a continuous object store with a management interface having a time control, which allows an administrator to specify a 'past' time, such as a single point or range.
Abstract: A data management system that protects data into a continuous object store includes a management interface having a time control. The time control allows an administrator to specify a 'past' time, such as a single point or range. When the time control is set to a single point, a hierarchical display of data appears on a display exactly as the data existed in the system at that moment in the past. Preferably, the visualization includes both the structure of the hierarchy (e.g., the identity of the directories, their files, databases, and the like) and also the contents of the data objects themselves (i.e., what was in the files and databases). The time control enables the management interface to operate within a history mode in which the display provides a visual representation of a 'virtual' point in time in the past during which the data management system has been operative to provide the data protection service. In addition, the management interface can be toggled to operate in a real-time mode, which provides an active view of the system data as it changes in real-time, typically driven by changes to primary storage. This real-time mode provides the user with the ability to view changes that occur to a set of data currently visible on the display screen. The interface also allows an administrator to specify and manage policy including, without limitation, how long data is retained in the management system. A policy engine enables the user to assert 'temporal-based' policy over data objects.

TL;DR: In this article, a text processing system receives a character input string and determines whether to apply character processing, such as accent or punctuation, in a non-English language such as Italian.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for processing text or character data are disclosed. A text processing system receives a character input string and determines whether to apply character processing. A non-English language such as Italian can be entered into a processing system such as a computer using a standard English based keyboard such that additional keys for providing accents or other grammatical and punctuation symbols or characters not existing in English are not required. In one mode, text is automatically accented or punctuated without requiring user intervention. In another mode, a user is provided with a list of accent or punctuation choices so that the user may select the optimum accent or punctuation. Text processing of an input may be activated by a text sequence including a possible vowel accent or apostrophe error, and may continue as an input method editor loop in response to repeated actuations of the key associated with the first activation event. When an activator event input is detected, a rules based system is utilized to select a correctly accented and punctuated character. A list of alternative accents and punctuations is optionally displayed, and a user may toggle through the list using the activator event to select a desired character. The display provides information for a level of certainty of a selected character or word.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a mechanism to change the control access from normal mode to selective lock mode, where any user may only select to open one of the selection of applications by selecting a displayed selectable link for the application.
Abstract: A computer system operates in normal mode where all applications and files are accessible to an authorized user, where an authorized user enters a required log in to access all applications. When a trigger to change the control access from normal mode to selective lock mode is detected, access to the applications and files is blocked and the content within the user interface is cleared to initiate the selective lock mode. Next, content is added to the user interface including a folder with only a selection of the applications each accessible through a separate selectable link, where the selectable links are designated in the particular folder by an authorized user during normal mode. During selective lock mode, any user may only select to open one of the selection of applications by selecting a displayed selectable link for the application. Responsive to a selection of a selectable link, a wrapper function is called that opens the application, wherein any user is enabled to fully access only the wrappered application and the wrapper blocks access to the remainder of the computer system, such that during selective lock mode any user is presented with access, without first logging in, to a fully functioning version of each of the selection of applications designated by the authorized user in the particular folder.

TL;DR: To improve system reliability, expand the range of conditions under which the system functions by employing four concept design strategies to avoid failure modes.
Abstract: To be reliable, a system must be robust—it must avoid failure modes even in the presence of a broad range of conditions including harsh environments, changing operational demands, and internal deterioration. This paper discusses and codifies techniques for robust system design that operate by expanding the range of conditions under which the system functions. A distinction is introduced between one-sided and two-sided failure modes, and four strategies are presented for creating larger windows between sets of one-sided failure modes. Each strategy is illustrated through two examples from industrial practice. For each strategy, one example is from paper handling and another is from jet engines. By showing that every strategy has been successfully applied to each system, we seek to illustrate that the strategies are widely applicable and highly effective. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
