TL;DR: In this paper, the MS-DOS system and its applications are prevented from interfering with the UNIX system and applications, which execute in the protected mode, by selectively inhibiting the associated control pulses.
Abstract: The UNIX® and MS-DOS® operating systems are supported in a multi-tasking computer. At the heart of the computer is a microprocessor having protected and non-protected modes. The computer includes special-purpose hardware which prevents the MS-DOS system and its applications, which execute in the non-protected mode, from interfering with the UNIX system and its applications, which execute in the protected mode. In particular, this hardware monitors addresses generated by the computer and, by selectively inhibiting the associated control pulses, prevents the MS-DOS system from, for example, writing in UNIX-system-allocated memory, or accessing I/O devices that the UNIX system is currently using. In addition, a context switching feature is provided whereby the user can select, via a keyboard operation, to have displayed on the computer video monitor at any given time the image generated from the current UNIX system screen data or the image generated from the current MS-DOS system screen data.

Abstract: In a communication system, the user can be instructed by a speech message to execute an operation according to the procedure for each of various different services. The switching system within the communication system identifies the kind of service which the user wants and then supplies speech information in a conversational mode to the communication terminal device, thereby instructing the user to execute an operation procedure for the service on the communication terminal device. Therefore, the user can enjoy a desired service even if he has no preliminary knowledge of the operation procedure for the service.

TL;DR: In this article, the scanning key can be also used as for storing the music to the memory, when it is judged that 10sec have not passed, and it is decided that the key is pushed down (ON) again, the music is stored in the memory.
Abstract: PURPOSE: To make unnecessary an exclusive-use operating key for storing by storing the address information of the program information at a memory when a scanning key is operated again during the reproducing for a constant time. CONSTITUTION: In the scanning mode, the head part of respective pieces of music is performed for a constant time (for example, 10sec) only, when it is decided that 10sec have passed, searching is executed to the next music and the above-mentioned action is repeated over all recorded pieces of the music. In the scanning mode, when it is judged that 10sec have not passed, and it is decided that the scanning key is pushed down (ON) again, the music is stored in the memory. Thus, the scanning key can be also used as for storing the music to the memory. COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
TL;DR: The study reveals that the user interface is important in user acceptance of an online user assistance tool, but the established patterns of user behavior and mode of advertising also strongly affect the success of the system.
Abstract: An online help system, called ICNHELP, was implemented on the large Los Alamos Integrated Computing Network. Users from three different operating systems could quickly access summary information on network capabilities. Usage was monitored for a five-month period, and users were given the opportunity to comment online. There were three times as many accesses as users. Most users accessed ICNHELP to jog their memories about specific command information, but a high number used it as a browsing tool to learn about network capabilities. The study reveals that the user interface is important in user acceptance of an online user assistance tool, but the established patterns of user behavior and mode of advertising also strongly affect the success of the system.

TL;DR: The use and design of a third, menu-driven mode of user interface was found that was desirable in EMERGE, a rule-based expert system designed for analysis of chest pain.
Abstract: Expert systems have been designed for numerous medical applications. Although many of these systems have performed very well in experimental testing, very few are in actual clinical use. One continuing issue in the design of these systems is the type of user interface, and consequently the ease of use of the system.
EMERGE, a rule-based expert system designed for analysis of chest pain, was originally designed with two types of user interface: a questioning mode in which the user answers questions with y, n, or?, and a data-driven mode in which information in free-format phrases can be entered directly. EMERGE was tested both retrospectively and prospectively. During the prospective analysis, it was found that a third, menu-driven mode of user interface was desirable. In this mode, the user can choose selections from a menu in a manner similar to many microcomputer applications. In this paper, the use and design of these user interfaces is discussed.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose to enable checking with such a simple operation as setting a changeover instruction even when an element such as diode having a passage blocking action of current is connected, by arranging a switching circuit for checking so as to run current in both reverse and forward ways to a connection line circuit.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable checking with such a simple operation as setting a changeover instruction even when an element such as diode having a passage blocking action of current is connected, by arranging a switching circuit for checking so as to run current in both reverse and forward ways to a connection line circuit to be tested. CONSTITUTION:The normal connection mode is entered by the key operation. When a start key 13 is pressed, a changeover instruction P1 is inputted into the bases of Trs S11 and S12 of a changeover circuit 17 by a command from a microcomputer 7 based on a program in an ROM12 to specify + (circle hereafter eliminated) 4 contact. If so, a circuit of [positive electrode of the power source E1 switch S11 + contact diode D1 side contact switch S12 negative electrode of the power source] is formed to run current to -4 position to +4 position. When the command of the contact number turns to +5, switches S21 and S22 are turned ON by a signal P2 from the microcomputer 7 to run current to a connection line 45 from -5 position to +5 position. Thus, checking can be done simply with elements D1 and D2.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the reliability and safety on driving an automobile by setting a normal and an abnormal operation mode between microprocessors provided corresponding to respective accessories of the automobile. CONSTITUTION:A master station MS10 sends a synchronizing signal to remote station RSs 20, 30, and 40 in normal operation mode, and then sends a specific signal to the RS20 to decide whether the station is normal or not including a transmission line 29 according to whether there is a normal response signal or not, store the decision result, and the reporting that to the RSs 30 and 40. In abnormal mode, e.g. when the RS40 and its transmission line 49 are faulty, the MS10 informs the RSs 20 and 30 of the abnormality with a specific signal on the basis of the contents of the abnormality. Further, the respective RSs 20, 30, and 40 when deciding on their abnormality report that to other stations by a specific means.
TL;DR: In this article, a speech recognition system for any computer without requiring the modification of the computer software is described, which can be installed between a keyboard unit (2) and the computer.
Abstract: Apparatus providing a speech recognition facility for a computer (not shown) is installed between a keyboard unit (2) and the computer. In the speech mode a digitised audio input from a microphone (6) is compared by a microprocessor (12) with data held in a speech parameter store (20) to determine the word or phrase spoken. The identity so determined is then used to obtain from a data store (18) a character string, previously entered from the keyboard unit (2), for transmission to the computer on an output (3'). A speech recognition facility may accordingly be provided for any computer without requiring amendment of the computer software.
TL;DR: In this paper, a data conversion circuit corresponding to the LP mode, which can be externally added to a signal processing circuit designed only for a standard mode, a flag processing circuit and the address generation circuit of RAM, is presented.
Abstract: PURPOSE: To easily realize long time recording and reproducing following an LP mode format by providing a data conversion circuit corresponding to the LP mode, which can be externally added to a signal processing circuit designed only for a standard mode, a flag processing circuit and the address generation circuit of RAM. CONSTITUTION: At the time of a standard mode operation, data is prevented from being converted and it only passes through the data conversion circuit 2. At the time of the LP mode, a tape feed speed, the revolving number of a cylinder and a recording and reproducing frequency come to the half of the standard mode, and the timing of input/output data in the bus of the digital signal processing circuit 1 is the same as the standard mode at the time of the LP mode. Then, the data conversion circuit 2 converts prescribed data corresponding to the interleaving of the LP mode. The RAM address generation circuit is controlled so that is operates in correspondence with the access of RAM. The flag processing circuit 25 selects a flag whose interpolation flag is inferior, which is dispersed by LP interleaving and data conversion at the time of reproduction, and the flag is inputted to the digital signal processing circuit at the same timing as the standard mode. Thus, the LP mode can easily be realized. COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio

TL;DR: In this article, the number of keys on a keyboard is reduced by employing the decimal point key as a control key when stroked the second time in the entry of a decimal number word.
Abstract: The number of keys on a keyboard are reduced by employing the decimal point key as a control key when stroked the second time in the entry of a decimal number word. This eliminates the need for a key standard in the computer arts which is either designated as an "enter" key or as an "=" key depending upon the computer arithmetic process. It thereby becomes possible to use only twelve keys on a keyboard to control a modern computer with the order of 133 built-in programs or execution commands. This is done by providing in addition to ten decimal keys 0 to 9 and the decimal point key one additional control or execute key which initiates a two or more sequential key program step select mode in which any of the twelve keys are then stroked to designate a particular execution command. An accompanying graphic display of the various execution choices available makes the keyboard usable without necessity of frequent consultation of an instruction manual.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To attain the reproduction of a disk at and after the position where the preceding reproduction is interrupted by controlling the reproduction start address of the disk loaded to a player which is freely set under a reproduction pause mode on the basis of the disk identification number as well as the reproduction interruption address recorded to a memory. CONSTITUTION:A reproduction mechanism 16 is controlled in response to the actuation of a control circuit 14 containing a CPU30, an RAM32, etc. in a function array 22 of an operation panel 10. Thus a reproduction pause of a player is performed. In case the reproduction is interrupted in a reproduction pause mode, both identification number and interruption address of a disk are written to the RAM32. Based on the contents of the RAM32, the mechanism 16 is controlled by the circuit 14 when the disk is loaded again. Then the reproduction is started from the stored address position when the coincidence is obtained between the identification signal of the loaded disk and the stored identification number and then from the first address position in other cases respectively. Thus the disk can be reproduced at and after the position where the preceding reproduction is interrupted.
