Abstract: A point of sale system includes at least one computer, a keyboard, and money receiving, dispensing and storing mechanisms. The keyboard has item keys corresponding to an item for sale, category keys, function keys and a numerical pad. A bill tendered as payment is detected when it enters an opening and, is drawn into a money belt device and to a viewing window. The bill can be accepted or rejected by an operator visually examining the tendered bill. A signal produced by acceptance of the tendered bill is received by the computer to produce change-due data. Each money belt device detects each bill dispensed as change and causes a feedback signal to be produced to dispense another bill as change or to discontinue payment. The money handling mechanisms are placed in a disarmed mode, under control of a computer, at the completion of each sales transaction, and in an armed mode, under control of a computer operated through the keyboard. Another group of keys on the keyboard can produce employee-related data for providing audit information.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a control logic for appliances which provides numerical indications of how much time will be required to execute a program cycle which a user has selected, and how much remaining time is remaining as an operating cycle proceeds.
Abstract: An electronic sequence type controller for appliances or the like which provides numerical indications of how much time will be required to execute a program cycle which a user has selected, and how much time is remaining as an operating cycle proceeds. Additionally, means are provided for a service technician to rapidly set the controller to a particular program step for diagnostic purposes. More specifically, after user cycle options have been inputted, control logic initially enables a counting and display means to count up and rapidly executes the entire selected program a first time, the rapid first execution appearing essentially instantaneous to the user. This presets the counting and display means with a representation of the total number of program advancing operations required to execute the selected program. Next, the control logic means enables the counting and display means to count down, and executes the selected program a second time with relatively longer intervals between successive program advancing operations. The counting and display means then provides a continuous representation of the remaining time to go during the second execution. For diagnostic purposes, the control logic has a diagnostic mode wherein the program is advanced incrementally a step at a time in response to manual actuation of a switch.

TL;DR: In this paper, a circuit locates software and hardware errors in registers of processor controlled microprogrammed devices for data processing without need of additional circuits or monitoring of each register location.
Abstract: A circuit locates software and hardware errors in registers of processor controlled microprogrammed devices for data processing. It enables error location without need of additional circuits or monitoring of each register location. When an error occurs an eight Lamp array is activated which identifies the addressed instruction of the microprogram in operation. Determination of software or hardware error is achieved by comparison of the instruction with a stored list. A special indication program is initiated when an error occurs and is used to drive a lamp array normally used for operating mode display. A single error lamp is also illuminated.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed to improve both transmission efficiency and reliability of a system by providing each time-division multiplexer with a sending-address buffer part which controls time slots on time division mulitple circuits, and by sending transmitting information by finding an idle time slot.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve both transmission efficiency and reliability of a system by providing each time-division multiplexer with a sending-address buffer part which controls time slots on time-division mulitple circuits, and by sending transmitting information by finding an idle time slot. CONSTITUTION:This system is provided with channels 4 to 12 connected to node control parts 3-0 to 3-2 and time-division multiple circuits 21 to 26, and port adaptors 13 to 16 connected to terminals 17 to 20, so as to obtain time-division multiple network 1 which links mutually circuits 21 to 26 by time-division multiplexers 2-0 to 2-2. In this network 1, channels 4 to 12 of multiplexers 2-0 to 2-2 are provided with the sending address buffer part which controls time slops on circuits 21 to 26. Then, a transmission request is sent to the buffer part and an idle time slot among time slots is assigned; and each processing mode to send out transmitting information to citcuits 21 to 26 is registered at the time of the assigned time slot and information is sent out by the idle time slot.
TL;DR: In this article, the program reader skips an invalid instruction in the sequence program and then writes a program given by the memory address, which is commanded by the destination address, in the buffer memory 26.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable one to monitor a sequence program even though the program is modified by skipping an invalid instruction and displaying a program of the destination address in the case of a jump instruction. CONSTITUTION:When the monitor key of mode key 20a is pressed and the head address is specified by means of the numeric key 20b, the sequence program is read by the program reader 25 from the memory 10. The program reader 25 skips an invalid instruction in the sequence program. For a jump instruction, it writes a program given by the memory address, which is commanded by the destination address, in the buffer memory 26. The content written in the buffer memory 26 is displayed on the CRT.

TL;DR: Multiprogramming and multitasking programming concepts are familiar to most of us and the executive provides time slices to the incarnations of the user programs.
Abstract: Multiprogramming and multitasking programming concepts are familiar to most of us. In a multiprogrammed arrangement several "user programs" can share the use of a single computer in a time sharing mode. An executive program provides the time slices to the "user programs" by activating and deactivating them according to some schedule. When multitasking is added to this arrangement, a "user program" may have several incarnations and the executive provides time slices to the incarnations of the user programs.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose to use effectively an external terminal by the external input or output terminal of a transfer circuit to the external terminal of parallel input-output port and then by allowing the parallel input output port and data transfer circuits to share the same external terminal.
Abstract: PURPOSE: To use effectively an external terminal by the external input or output terminal of a transfer circuit to the external terminal of a parallel input-output port and then by allowing the parallel input-output port and data transfer circuit to share the same external terminal. CONSTITUTION: In mode 1, external terminals E,F,G,H, and I are used for input and output data having passed through parallel input-output port A and in mode 2, they are used for series input-output insterruption request part B, counter interruption request part C and external inerruption request part D. By making output control signal S17 of request part B inactive, the output of driver 10 is held at level "H" and the same effect as the separation of request part B from terminal G is caused to send or receive correctly output S 3 or input S 8 to or from port A. When output control signal S 24 is made inactive by request part C to hold the output of driver 13 at level "H", the same effect as the separation of request part C from terminal F can be obtained, so that output S 1 or input S 6 will correctly be sent or received to and from port A. Supplying port A with an output pulling up external terminals allows request parts BWD inmode 2 to operate normally. COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio
TL;DR: The conundrum presented to the systems designer is how to tailor a module to a particular application and yet at the same time make the system flexible enough to be applicable to different fields.
Abstract: The continuing spread of low-cost interactive graphics from scientific and engineering fields into less technical areas has increased the demand for application and user-oriented software that requires little or no knowledge of programming. Thus, the conundrum presented to the systems designer is how to tailor a module to a particular application and yet at the same time make the system flexible enough to be applicable to different fields. One solution which has proven effective, can be called “User Template Mode”. In this system from a set of generalized building blocks, by means of a simple catechism, a user can initially select all the desired parameters and options. Thereafter, he need only invoke the template to obtain his customized interactive display automatically. This concept has been applied to a diverse range of problems, from program forecasting to log-sawing simulation.

TL;DR: Researchers experimentally observe nonlinear mode conversion from He II's second to first resonant mode, confirming theoretical predictions and absolute amplitude measurements using novel calibration procedures at the predicted frequency.
