TL;DR: The open references at Crossref exceed 50%, highlighting the increasing adoption of open scholarship practices.
Abstract: Yesterday (November 23rd 2017) I was working with Daniel Ecer of eLife (d.ecer@elifesciences.org) to dig some hard facts out of the analyses he undertook on data he downloaded from Crossref in September 2017 (Ecer, 2017). In this, the first of two related posts, I report the results for all publishers. The analyses show that, of the 33,672,763 journal articles documented in Crossref that have accompanying references, 1
TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an excellent synthesis of the Canadian Fisheries Expedition, including the influence of the Norwegian expedition leader (Johan Hjort) on the development within Canada and the United States of America of an ecological and oceanographic approach to fisheries issues.
Abstract: Jennifer Hubbard, a history professor at Ryerson University, provides an excellent synthesis of the Canadian Fisheries Expedition, including the influence of the Norwegian expedition leader (Johan Hjort) on the development within Canada and the United States of America of an ecological and oceanographic approach to fisheries issues (Hubbard, 2014). Vera Schwach (at the Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education in Oslo, Norway), in the same volume, also provides a synthesis of Hjort’s brilliance as a scientist and leader (Schwach 2014). The report on the expedition, which was published by the Department of the Naval Service, Ottawa, is still a great read (Hjort 1919). Due to the fortunate timing of this two year study a century ago, the approach to addressing the fisheries issues of the day could be considered revolutionary. The expedition followed closely Hjort’s synthesis (published in 1914) of the Migration Committee work carried out under the guidance of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The mandate of the committee, which was established at the initiation of ICES in 1902, was to solve the reasons for the decadal scale fluctuations in the landings of the Great Fisheries of Northern Europe, in particular those for cod and herring. In the 18th and 19th century during the good years for fishing (with abundant landings), the economies of Northern Europe were robust, whereas during the poor years society at large suffered. The issue being addressed by ICES was high profile within several northern European countries adjacent to the North Sea and the North Atlantic waters, and thus the stakes for the continuation of ICES beyond the first few years of initial funding were high. Milestone 2 Caring for Populations Vulnerable Population Assessment
Abstract: Alexander George is one of political science’s most respected innovators and teachers of qualitative research design, and he and his former student Andrew Bennett have now teamed up to produce what is likely to become an influential text. It presents George’s influential methodological ideas together in one place for the first time and develops and defends them further with new contributions by Bennett added through close collaboration. I believe their book makes several valuable new contributions and also has a few limitations, one of them rather important/
Abstract: Many services rely on existing external data sets. The infrastructure will have to be capable of leveraging this external data upon user’s request. This milestone 4.3 (M13) is part of Task 4.3 and is based on the review of the relevant datasets (reported as D4.4). Selected datasets are integrated into the WP6 Virtual Folder and further issues and thoughts are discussed. Some of the related work in progress is tracked within WP6 wiki pages http://internal-wiki.west-life.eu/w/index.php?title=D6.2Metadata, therefore, this report is a snapshot of the relevant information available there at the time of this milestone, i.e. September 2017.
Abstract: We describe the use of a milestone template for evaluating and improving the genetics elective in our University and compared it to the previous work by Press et al.
Abstract: The exhibition of Japanese prints held at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1890 is a milestone in the history of Japonisme. Organized by S. Bing in collaboration with a number of Japonistes, the exhibition presented more than 1100 Japanese prints, illustrated books and kakemono. The article to which this supplement belongs reconstructs this historic event in its diverse aspects: clarifying the preparation process, reconstructing the exhibition venue, identifying exhibits, and examining their lenders. All these factors will be placed in a historical context, revealing how meticulously Bing prepared the exhibition and subsequently promoted ukiyo-e prints in France. The impact of this exhibition on artists and critics, which is clearly visible in artists’ letters and contemporary reviews published in the press, is also briefly discussed.

Abstract: Purpose: This study examines how Clinical Competency Committees (CCCs) synthesize assessment data to make judgments about residents’ clinical performances. Methods: Between 2014 and 2015, after four six-month reporting periods to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), 7 of 16 CCC faculty at Rush University Medical Center completed questionnaires focused on their perspectives about rating residents on their achievement of the milestones and participated in a focus group. Qualitative data were analyzed using grounded theory. Milestones ratings for two six-month ACGME reporting cycles (n = 100 categorical residents) were also analyzed. Results: CCC members weighted resident rotation ratings highest (weight = 37%), followed by faculty rotation comments (weight = 27%) and personal experience with residents (weight = 14%) for making judgments about learner’s milestone levels. Three assessment issues were identified from qualitative analyses: (1) “design issues” (e.g. problems with available data or lack thereof); (2) “synthesis issues” (e.g. factors influencing ratings and decision-making processes) and (3) “impact issues” (e.g. how CCC generated milestones ratings are used). Conclusions: Identifying factors that affect assessment at all stages of the CCC process can contribute to improving assessment systems, including support for faculty development for CCCs. Recognizing challenges in synthesizing first and second-hand assessment data is an important step in understanding the CCC decision-making process.
Abstract:
This work is an unbiased understanding of underlying characteristics of empowerment, scientifically gathered and without any feminist nuances. Social status of women has had its crests and falls all along Indian history. The main focus of the present study is on the fact that, in spite of the revolution in the number of working women, many are blocked in their attempts to gain access to higher occupational positions. The sample comprised of 30 women administrators, entrepreneurs and professionals, from various walks of life having reached a significant milestone in their life from an organizational point of view, in the Indian national scenario. These were selected on the basis of empowering behaviour exhibited by them. A qualitative method of research was implemented to have a basic understanding of the underlying factors and to establish an insight into their interplay. Along with this, a documentary analysis was undertaken to determine the domains. Based on the three categories three separate role models were proposed in the _beginning, but noncompliance on tests of significance rendered only one role model to be developed. This study is just the beginning; from here the road map of success for the working women can be drawn. As empowerment is a continuous process, that needs to be designed and articulated for every individual.
