TL;DR: The disproportion of published work on ceramics to that on lithics has always been a puzzle to me as mentioned in this paper, and the fact that there is a large body of work on pottery and not much on stone has been published on the other hand.
Abstract: The disproportion of published work on ceramics to that on lithics (to use the equivalent term) has always been a puzzle to me. This is not to deny that ceramics can usefully date strata in an excavation, that they were traded widely and can be proxies for other trade goods, or that sometimes they can be quite pretty. But these aspects — and not least long-distance trade — are generally true of stone objects too. Monumental construction in stone is the spectacular face of Rome’s empire. Yet as recently as 2009 there were yards’ worth of monographs on pottery in Oxford’s Sackler Library, for instance, but just one shelf of some 4-feet worth of books on stone — and those did not include anything like the important book under review, which has emerged from a dissertation completed in that year.
TL;DR: The IMF Annual Report 2016 highlights the challenges and achievements of the organization in addressing global economic issues, including the implementation of its quota and governance reforms, increased financial support for low-income developing countries, analysis of the international monetary system, and policy advice on mass migration.
Abstract: AbstractThe year was marked by difficult challenges and milestone achievements. To reinvigorate modest growth at a time of uncertainty about a complicated global economy, the IMF membership endorsed a three-pronged approach of monetary, fiscal, and structural policies to get the world economy back on a stronger and safer growth track. Highlights of the IMF’s work during the year included entry into effect of its quota and governance reforms approved in 2010, which increase the Fund’s core resources and make it more representative of the membership; commitments for increased financial support, policy advice, expertise, and training to help low-income developing countries achieve the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals; analysis of the international monetary system; inclusion of the Chinese currency in the basket of currencies that make up the Special Drawing Right; and policy advice on the economic repercussions of mass migration of refugees from Syria and other conflict-afflicted states. The IMF Annual Report, which covers the period May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2016, discusses all of these issues, plus a wide range of policy matters that the Executive Board addressed during the year.
TL;DR: The 1954 floods were a disaster that piled more pressure onto an already stressed community and required immediate disaster response, medium-term rehabilitation, and long-term improvements to flood mitigation works amounted to hundreds of thousands of Straits dollars.
Abstract: A combination of torrential and prolonged rains, high tides, and insufficient flood control caused some of the worst flooding known in Singapore in the first two weeks of December 1954. Early 1950s Singapore was a British Crown Colony and part of the Federation of Malaya. It was a particularly tense time politically, with the rise of nationalist movements and an ongoing state of “emergency” declared by the British government in response to a perceived communist threat supported by some members of the Chinese community. The 1954 floods were a disaster that piled more pressure onto an already stressed community. More than 10,000 people were affected; 5,000 were temporarily or permanently displaced. Five people died on the night of the 17 December when their rescue boat capsized—the first victims of the disaster. The worst affected areas were also some of the poorest: kampong (rural village) communities on the north and eastern fringes of the city, including Potong Pasir, Braddell Road, Lorong Tai Seng, Geylang Serai, and Bedok. Immediate disaster response, medium-term rehabilitation, and long-term improvements to flood mitigation works amounted to hundreds of thousands of Straits dollars.

TL;DR: This paper summarizes technical innovations and observational results achieved with the GREGOR Fabry-Pérot Interferometer (GFPI) in 2013, marking a milestone in its development, verification, and acceptance, now in operation for the international scientific community.
Abstract: This paper shall provide a summary of not yet published technical innovations to the GREGOR Fabry-Pérot Interferometer (GFPI) at the 1.5m GREGOR Solar Telescope (Europe's largest solar telescope) that I implemented in 2013 as the Instrument Scientist of the GFPI. It also represents an overview of important and not yet published observational results that I achieved with the GFPI in 2013. The results and achievements can be considered a milestone in the further development, scientific verification and final acceptance of this instrument. The instrument is now in operation and employed by the international scientific community.
Abstract: The present collection of articles, edited by the Department of Earth and Environment - National Research Council (DTA-CNR) of Italy, represents the different research activities and technologies developments carried out by CNR in the field of marine environment and its resources. Marine Research is a challenging field whose issues are tackled by expertise coming from different research sectors and with an overarching perspective. The main coordinating initiative at national level today is the RITMARE Flagship Programme, The Italian research for the sea, led by CNR and bringing together the experience of a wide audience of national stakeholders and research performing organizations. In this framework, the effort by DTA-CNR in spreading, transferring and improving marine research activities, is actually summarized in this milestone publication. The initial idea is due to Giuseppe Cavarretta, to whom I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for the initiative. Marine Research at CNR shows the potential of the DTA-CNR´s research network with activities ranging from marine biology to observational and operational oceanography, from Mediterranean Sea to the Arctic and Antarctic Seas, from technology engineering to policy support. Articles published in this book have been revised by a selected group of referees and are organized in eight different themes: Fishery and Sea Resources, Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning, Marine Ecology, Marine Geology, Observing Systems and Forecasting, Oceanography, Risks and Technologies.
Abstract: Manifesto is an official ideology and vision by candidates or parties that will brings comfort to the public or local residents in ensuring victory to the parties. The manifesto is required to carry out by individuals or parties after winning the seat at the area. This research review of research framework is conducted to determine the effectiveness of manifesto in general election in Malaysian politics. TL;DR: The implementation of the Verley and Lund clay soil model in Level 2 of the PRCI OBS software encountered discrepancies with the documentation and code. A technical note was prepared to clarify these issues and provide suggestions for further work.
Abstract: The scope of work for phase I of PR-453-134504 included implementation of the Verley and Lund [1] clay soil model in Level 2 of the PRCI on-bottom stability (OBS) software. Throughout the implementation process, a number of apparent discrepancies between the code and the documentation in relation to the pipe-soil interaction (PSI) model were identified and raised with PRCI. In Phase 2 INTECSEA was tasked to formalize these observations and provide more background information to PRCI for further clarification. The execution strategy was to host a series of meetings with a focused group of PRCI team members to review various topics of soil model in Level 2 and prepare a technical note that captures the issues discussed. This document presents the technical note on the PSI topics and clarifies INTECSEA's suggestions for further work on this matter. A summary of the technical queries along with ITS recommendation is presented in Table 1-1. Further detail on each topic is available within the report.
