TL;DR: A Rudimentary Laboratory In A Small Kitchen TLDR: The author's past and financial struggles hindered their ability to achieve economic security, yet their passion for research remained strong, leading to scientific satisfaction.
Abstract: Abstract Golgi was about to turn thirty, an important milestone in anyone’s life, when one is not yet looking backward but when one’s past tends to determine one’s future. This is usually an age when economic security has been achieved, or at least within reach, but for Golgi the financial situation was still precarious and the prospects of a career continued to be obscure. Still, his fascination with research was too intense, and up until that moment, scientific satisfactions were enough to repay the many hours spent in Bizzozero’s laboratory.

TL;DR: Environmental fiscal reform in Italy is likely to be implemented due to the favourable climate and the international trend of climate change awareness.
Abstract: Abstract An apparently favourable climate has been growing in the last 12 months and is likely to help to create the conditions for an environmental tax reform in Italy. At the international level in the last year, we have witnessed: the Stern Review (October 2006) on the economics of climate change —a report commissioned by the UK Government and led by an orthodox economist of the Bank of England tradition, recognizing and analysing costs and risks of climate change, and which might represent a milestone in the attitude and comprehension by the community of economists;
TL;DR: Error-free milestones in error prone measurements provide a basis for estimating a linear relationship between the true but unknown value of the error-free predictor and an outcome.
Abstract: A predictor variable or dose that is measured with substantial error may possess an error-free milestone, such that it is known with negligible error whether the value of the variable is to the left or right of the milestone. Such a milestone provides a basis for estimating a linear relationship between the true but unknown value of the error-free predictor and an outcome, because the milestone creates a strong and valid instrumental variable. The inferences are nonparametric and robust, and in the simplest cases, they are exact and distribution free. We also consider multiple milestones for a single predictor and milestones for several predictors whose partial slopes are estimated simultaneously. Examples are drawn from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, in which a BA degree acts as a milestone for sixteen years of education, and the binary indicator of military service acts as a milestone for years of service.
