Abstract: An articulated foam mattress including a back section and a seat section joined to each other by a hinge section. Both the back section and the seat section are formed from polyurethane foam. The hinge section is formed from visco-elastic foam, commonly referred to as memory foam. The visco-elastic foam hinge section retains its compressed condition as the mattress is folded from the upright position to the seating position. The visco-elastic foam of the hinge section reduces the reflex properties of the mattress to reduce the urge of the mattress to slide off of the furniture frame.
TL;DR: In this paper, a pressure dispersion pad and a pressure dispersing mattress system are used to reduce or eliminate capillary closing and a resultant reduction in pressure concentration and resultant discomfort and repositioning during sleep.
Abstract: A pressure dispersion system includes a pressure dispersion pad and a pressure dispersing mattress system for body support and sleep. The pressure dispersion pad and pressure dispersing mattress systems reduce pressure points from a supported body to less than approximately 32 mm Hg to reduce or eliminate capillary closing and a resultant reduction in pressure concentration and resultant discomfort and repositioning during sleep. Empirical design from human body pressure mapping is used to identify support zones for which components are selected and assembled in the pressure dispersion support systems for pressure dispersion and relief. In a pressure dispersion support system in the form of a mattress, multiple zones are defined by arrangement of different kinds of support materials, including foam tops such as memory foam or moderate to low density polyurethane, and secondary foam layers or foam base of relatively higher density polyurethane and latex. Different types of foam and foam constructs are provided in different zones of the pressure dispersion pad. Incorporation of the pressure dispersion pad in a mattress system, and in combination with foam dampening inserts in an innerspring of the mattress system, translate the pressure relieving properties of the zoned pressure dispersion pad into a mattress system.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors characterized a mattress innovation as a radical-disruptive innovation (RDI) with most characteristics of both radical and disruptive innovations in that it: (1) uniquely delivers new customer-demanded benefits useful even to mainstream users, (2) requires new organizational core competencies relative to the incumbent firms, and (3) disrupts the business models and markets of incumbent firms.
TL;DR: In this article, a neck-support contour pillow is made using memory foam that contains green tea and a green dye, which is used to make pillows, cushions and mattresses.
Abstract: A method of making foam imparts antimicrobial and antiodorant qualities to the foam. Green tea powder is added to the polyol raw materials for making memory foam. The green tea memory foam is used to make pillows, cushions and mattresses. Green tea foam in the top layer of a mattress acts as an antiodorant such that less of the chemical smell of the memory foam is perceived by the user. In addition, the bacteria and mold that would otherwise develop in the moist warmer sleeping environment on memory foam are killed by the green tea additive to the foam. Measurable antimicrobial and antiodorant qualities in the green tea foam are achievable by adding green tea powder constituting less than 2% of the weight of the resulting green tea foam. A neck-support contour pillow is made using memory foam that contains green tea and a green dye.
