TL;DR: In this article, an inter-working function selection system in a coupled data network is described, where the first end system is a subscriber to the home network and operates within the foreign network.
Abstract: An inter-working function selection system in a coupled data network is disclosed. The coupled data network includes a foreign network and a home network. The foreign network includes a foreign mobile switching center with a serving registration server. The home network includes a home mobile switching center with a home registration server and a plurality of unassigned home inter-working functions. A first end system is a subscriber to the home network and operates within the foreign network. The first end system includes an end registration agent to form a registration request, the end registration agent sending the registration request through the serving registration server to the home registration server, the home registration server including a module to select an active home inter-working function from the plurality of unassigned home inter-working functions based on the registration request.
TL;DR: In this article, a frame relay switched virtual circuit (FR SVC) transport function capability in the source system (202) is established and a plurality of parameters generated by the mobile station (103).
Abstract: The method of transferring a CDMA data signal (107) associated with a mobile station (103) which operates between a source system (202) and a target system (204). The method includes establishing a frame relay switched virtual circuit (FR SVC) transport function capability in the source system (202) and, consequently generating a plurality of parameters. The method also includes determining that the mobile station (103) requires a transfer of the CDMA data signal (107) which results in forwarding the message from the source system to the target system to transfer the CDMA data signal (107), the message including the plurality of parameters. Based on the plurality of parameters, converting the CDMA data signal (107) into a FR SCV format by the target system (204), forming a frame relay data signal, which is routed via the target system (204) to an inter working function element (IWF) (214) of the source system (202).
TL;DR: In this paper, a method of supporting an interworking between a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a mobile communications network is provided, where the interworking is facilitated by an Interworking Function (IWF) disposed on a WLAN side of the inter-working.
Abstract: There is provided a method of supporting an interworking between a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a mobile communications network. The interworking is facilitated by an interworking function (IWF) disposed on a WLAN side of the interworking. The method comprises the step of connecting the WLAN to the mobile communications network by employing the IWF as an auxiliary radio network controller for the mobile communications network, in particular, a drift radio network controller (DRNC) in a UMTS network.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose an Inter-Working Function (IWF) for interfacing between a wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and a communication system, which allows the WLAN to use the authentication capability of the communication system for local authentication.
Abstract: Inter-Working Function (IWF) for interfacing between a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and a communication system. The IWF may contain sufficient information to authenticate a user access to the WLAN, or the IWF may need to request authentication from the communication system. In one embodiment, the IWF sends an access challenge to the WLAN for a user. The IWF may then pass a response to the challenge on to the communication system for authentication. The IWF allows the WLAN to use the authentication capability of the communication system for local authentication.
TL;DR: In this article, a call inter working function is used to convert the call signalling commands and data from the form generated by the private branch eXchange into the form required by the ATM switch.
Abstract: The inter-connection of dissimilar telecommunications networks, such as a Private Branch eXchange (PBX) and an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network, is often a requirement PBXs have highly complex call control facilities, whereas ATM switches have simple call control facilities By re-using the call control software of a PBX to control the configuration of the ATM switch, call control facilities for the ATM switch can be effected, without the complexity and expense of developing this software for the ATM switch This is achieved by use of a call inter working function to convert the call signalling commands and data from the form generated by the PBX into the form required by the ATM switch
