Abstract: Upon first consideration, sport and art seem to occupy separate, even opposing, realms - sport, associated with physical prowess, and art, with the highest reaches of the human mind But because sport is such a powerful metaphor for so many human experiences, it has found its way into artistic traditions all over the world Part One of this book provides a basic understanding of sport as symbol Part Two gives attention to animals as adversaries and traces the origins of sporting art back to the hunt Part Three considers humans competing against humans in combat sports, ball games, stick-and-ball games, and racquet sports, as well as in warfare Part Four concentrates on contesting with oneself in races and sports of grace and beauty such as gymnastics, figure skating and ice dancing The book concludes with a discussion of the athlete's relationships to society

Abstract: In these studies the anthropometric characteristics and some functional characteristics of ice-dancers are analysed. It has been shown that the maximum oxygen uptake is similar to that of classical ballet dancers. Tests effected on the ice revealed a high production of lactate, the involvement of the anaerobic metabolism, and high heart rates. Abstract: This cultural-interpretive essay offers critical commentary on Koreanness, racial ideology, hegemonic racial power, and racialized cultural taste with the aim of interpreting the sport–music nexus by examining a case of the interface between music and sport: The authors focus on the case of the Olympic ice dance that the South Korean team performed for the Korean traditional folk song Arirang at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. The authors argue that music and sport can be understood as a semiological system that shapes non-Whites’ ideological belief system. In addition, this essay engages with a discussion of cultural classification that often racializes skaters of color as the aforementioned are informed by Orientalism.
