TL;DR: In this article, the design, build and test of a smoke visualisation system for a vertical wind tunnel at Brunel University is described, which utilised a fog machine for smoke generation and required the design and manufacture of smoke rake to produce smoke lines inside the test section.
Abstract: The design, build and test of a smoke visualisation system for a vertical wind tunnel at Brunel University are described. The smoke visualisation system utilised a fog machine for smoke generation and required the design and manufacture of a smoke rake to produce smoke lines inside the wind tunnel test section. The application of these smoke lines over several test objects, including wing sections and bluff body shapes, demonstrated the functionality of the smoke system in producing high-quality visualisations. The facility has proven to be an economic addition in supporting other research projects and is anticipated to be a valuable ‘hands on’ addition to existing aerospace laboratory teaching.
TL;DR: In this article, a screen-free display three-dimensional imaging device consisting of a spraying device, a pressure device, and a projection device is presented, which is characterized in that: the spraying device is a fog machine or a humidifier and a boiler, the pressure device is either a wind tunnel or a supercharging pump, and the projection device comprises laser tubes, a search lamp or projection equipment.
Abstract: The invention discloses a screen-free display three-dimensional imaging device. The device comprises a spraying device, a pressure device and a projection device, and is characterized in that: the spraying device is a fog machine or a humidifier and a boiler; the pressure device is a wind tunnel or a supercharging pump; the projection device comprises laser tubes, a search lamp or projection equipment; the pressure device is placed above the nozzle of the spraying device; the laser tubes are arranged at positions which are certain distances away from the spraying device; a plurality of the laser tubes are projected in steam fog from different angles and intersect at a point to form a pixel point; a plurality of pixel points can form a simple three-dimensional image in mid air; according to a real object, when light spots of the laser tubes form a three-dimensional image on the steam fog, the effect is very gorgeous and bright; the light spots also can be projected on a cloud layer to serve as the pixel points by using the search lamp and the pixel points form an image; on the night of festival, an image effect formed by using sky as a screen is very enormous; and when the device is used in advertisement industry, the benefit and the influence generated by the device are also very profound and lasting.
TL;DR: In low visibility conditions the variation in attenuation with wavelength was found to be larger than predicted by the standard model and it is shown that longer infra-red wavelengths are more suitable for free space optical communication.
Abstract: A low-cost experiment, feasible without the use of laboratory-grade atmospheric chamber and optical spectral analyzer, was designed to experimentally evaluate the influence of fog and smoke on free-space optical systems. Low-visibility conditions were simulated using an artificial fog machine and smoke flares in a 50 m PVC corridor with several bi-directional wireless optical links established at wavelengths in the 1270 nm–1550 nm range with an additional green laser based measurement system. In low visibility conditions the variation in attenuation with wavelength was found to be larger than predicted by the standard model. We propose a new empirical model for this region and show that longer infra-red wavelengths are more suitable for free space optical communication.
