Abstract: The purpose of this review is to summarize the present state of the field of fine structure genetics, particularly those recent developments not covered in recent reviews of this series (1, 2). The reviewer has selected certain topics which reflect not so much the logical organization of the field as those areas in which real progress is being made, or on which specific commentary seems desirable. We shall thus consider in turn (a) the genetic code, (b) suppressor mutations, (c) recombination and mapping, (d) the function of structure, and (e) the function of linkage. The topic of chemical mutagenesis, though definitely current and choice, had to be omitted for lack of space.
