TL;DR: The Single Instance Store is described, a component within Windows® 2000 that implements links with the semantics of copies for files stored on a Windows 2000 NTFS volume, and other possible uses of SIS are discussed.
Abstract: Certain applications, such as Windows 2000's Remote Install service, can result in a set of files in which many different files have the same content. Using a traditional file system to store these files separately results in excessive use of disk and main memory file cache space. Using hard or symbolic links would eliminate the excess resource requirements, but changes the semantics of having separate files, in that updates to one "copy" of a file would be visible to users of another "copy." We describe the Single Instance Store (SIS), a component within Windows® 2000 that implements links with the semantics of copies for files stored on a Windows 2000 NTFS volume. SIS uses copy-on-close to implements the copy semantics of its links. SIS is structured as a file system filter driver that implements links and a user level service that detects duplicate files and reports them to the filter for conversion into links. Because SIS links are semantically identical to separate files, SIS creates them automatically when it detects files with duplicate contents. This paper describes the design and implementation of SIS in detail, briefly presents measurements of a remote install server showing a 58% disk space savings by using SIS, and discusses other possible uses of SIS.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed an information protection of digital content transferred by streaming and download service through wire or wireless Internet network, by using of the encryption, decryption, distribution, and authentication technologies.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the information protection of digital content transferred by streaming and download service through wire or wireless Internet network. The information protection system in this invention suggests a drastic prevention method of copyrights infringement such as illegal copy and unauthorized distribution of digital content, by using of the encryption, decryption, distribution, and authentication technologies. This invention suggests the control technology of general viewer program, not the specific viewer program for information protection, using a network filter driver for streaming and file system filter driver for download service. The main function of network and file system filter driver is the filtering operation such as a hooking, changing, decrypting, and restoring of message and data packet, and transferring to the viewer program. The main idea and technology of this invention suggest higher secure and efficient digital information protection system for live/VOD/HTTP streaming and download service.
TL;DR: A software layer (filter driver) residing between software components or application programs running locally or on a client across a network and a persistent store of an operating system provides on-the-fly conversions of persistent information formats.
Abstract: A software layer (filter driver) residing between software components or application programs running locally or on a client across a network and a persistent store of an operating system provides on-the-fly conversions of persistent information formats. The filter driver determines which format a program expects, and dynamically converts the information from its storage format to the format expected by the program. Conversion includes both data format conversion, and conversion of access semantics. Loadable conversion modules are provided for converting application specific formats due to the potential large number of such formats which can be encountered. The filter driver may change the format that information is stored in based on access history or other system requirements. The software components or application programs may be ignorant of the true storage format used by the system, and thus the filter driver can be used to transparently give old versions of software access to information stored in newer formats.
TL;DR: In this article, a volume filter driver can monitor data changes using an in-memory bitmap, while a log file and/or update sequence number journal can keep track of which files have been modified.
Abstract: Data can be protected at a production server in a virtually continuous fashion, without necessarily imposing severe constraints on the source application(s). For example, a production server can create an application-consistent backup of one or more volumes, the backups corresponding to a first instance in time. A volume filter driver can monitor data changes using an in-memory bitmap, while a log file and/or update sequence number journal can keep track of which files have been modified. The volume updates are also consistent for an instance (later) in time. At the next replication cycle, such as every few minutes (however configured), the volume filter driver passes each in-memory bitmap to the physical disk on the production server. The production server then sends the updates to the backup server, which thus stores application-consistent backups for the volume for multiple instances of time.
TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for dynamically distributing data to an appropriate storage device based on the significance of the data is presented, which also includes identifying a storage device and memory location of the storage device.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically distributing data to an appropriate storage device based on the significance of the data. In one embodiment the method determines the significance of a data file using the format of the data file. The method also includes identifying a storage device and memory location of the storage device to write the data. In a software implementation, a computer system employs a filter driver and/or a device driver to identify and store data files. In another embodiment, a storage controller includes a state machine that initiates and executes firmware to determine the data file format and also the storage device location.
