TL;DR: The Lattice Boltzmann equation is a simplified version of the Boltzmann equation that accurately describes fluid dynamics.
Abstract: Abstract In recent years, certain forms of the Boltzmann equation--now going by the name of "Lattice Boltzmann equation" (LBE)--have emerged which relinquish most mathematical complexities of the true Boltzmann equation without sacrificing physical fidelity in the description of complex fluid motion. This book provides the first detailed survey of LBE theory and its major applications to date. Accessible to a broad audience of scientists dealing with complex system dynamics, the book also portrays future developments in allied areas of science where fluid motion plays a distinguished role.
TL;DR: This article has reviewed the reasons why people want to love or leave the venerable (but perhaps hoary) MSE and reviewed emerging alternative signal fidelity measures and discussed their potential application to a wide variety of problems.
Abstract: In this article, we have reviewed the reasons why we (collectively) want to love or leave the venerable (but perhaps hoary) MSE. We have also reviewed emerging alternative signal fidelity measures and discussed their potential application to a wide variety of problems. The message we are trying to send here is not that one should abandon use of the MSE nor to blindly switch to any other particular signal fidelity measure. Rather, we hope to make the point that there are powerful, easy-to-use, and easy-to-understand alternatives that might be deployed depending on the application environment and needs. While we expect (and indeed, hope) that the MSE will continue to be widely used as a signal fidelity measure, it is our greater desire to see more advanced signal fidelity measures being used, especially in applications where perceptual criteria might be relevant. Ideally, the performance of a new signal processing algorithm might be compared to other algorithms using several fidelity criteria. Lastly, we hope that we have given further motivation to the community to consider recent advanced signal fidelity measures as design criteria for optimizing signal processing algorithms and systems. It is in this direction that we believe that the greatest benefit eventually lies.
TL;DR: A critical review of existing conceptualisations of implementation fidelity and a new conceptual framework for understanding and measuring the process are developed, which requires testing by empirical research.
Abstract: Implementation fidelity refers to the degree to which an intervention or programme is delivered as intended. Only by understanding and measuring whether an intervention has been implemented with fidelity can researchers and practitioners gain a better understanding of how and why an intervention works, and the extent to which outcomes can be improved. The authors undertook a critical review of existing conceptualisations of implementation fidelity and developed a new conceptual framework for understanding and measuring the process. The resulting theoretical framework requires testing by empirical research. Implementation fidelity is an important source of variation affecting the credibility and utility of research. The conceptual framework presented here offers a means for measuring this variable and understanding its place in the process of intervention implementation.
TL;DR: A multisite effort by the Treatment Fidelity Workgroup of the National Institutes of Health Behavior Change Consortium to identify treatment fidelity concepts and strategies in health behavior intervention research is described.
Abstract: Treatment fidelity refers to the methodological strategies used to monitor and enhance the reliability and validity of behavioral interventions. This article describes a multisite effort by the Treatment Fidelity Workgroup of the National Institutes of Health Behavior Change Consortium (BCC) to identify treatment fidelity concepts and strategies in health behavior intervention research. The work group reviewed treatment fidelity practices in the research literature, identified techniques used within the BCC, and developed recommendations for incorporating these practices more consistently. The recommendations cover study design, provider training, treatment delivery, treatment receipt, and enactment of treatment skills. Funding agencies, reviewers, and journal editors are encouraged to make treatment fidelity a standard part of the conduct and evaluation of health behavior intervention research.
TL;DR: A review of the fidelity of implementation research literature spanning a 25-year period found definitions and measures of fidelity were found not to be consistent across studies, and new definitions are proposed.
Abstract: To help inform drug abuse prevention research in school settings about the issues surrounding implementation, we conducted a review of the fidelity of implementation research literature spanning a 25-year period. Fidelity has been measured in five ways: (1) adherence, (2) dose, (3) quality of program delivery, (4) participant responsiveness and (5) program differentiation. Definitions and measures of fidelity were found not to be consistent across studies, and new definitions are proposed. While there has been limited research on fidelity of implementation in the social sciences, research in drug abuse prevention provides evidence that poor implementation is likely to result in a loss of program effectiveness. Studies indicate that most teachers do not cover everything in a curriculum, they are likely to teach less over time and training alone is not sufficient to ensure fidelity of implementation. Key elements of high fidelity include teacher training, program characteristics, teacher characteristics and organizational characteristics. The review concludes with a discussion of the tension between fidelity and reinvention/adaptation, and ways of resolving this tension. Recommendations are made for developing a consistent methodology for measuring and analyzing fidelity of implementation. Further, researchers and providers should col
