Abstract: The present invention relates to a unified messaging system and method which is more convenient and advantageously combines or makes use of existing communication channels or networks. Part of the system and method relies on a data communication network forming an intermediate leg of the distribution network. Telephone communication is typically used for initial or final legs. Voice mail, E-mail, facsimiles and other message types can be received by the system for retrieval by the subscriber. Communications may be centralized and retrieval of messages can be accomplished using one of a number of separate and distinct approaches. Thus, data communication networks such as the Internet can become global voice mail and facsimile mail systems.
TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for granting privileges for securely and selectively retrieving material such as data and databases, messages and other textual information, graphics, tables, analogs such as maps, facsimiles (FAX) of all manner of transmitted materials, audio such as voice or speech and music, video, images, and photographs, provided on storage media utilizing information encoded in the storage media.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for granting privileges for securely and selectively retrieving material such as data and databases, messages and other textual information, graphics, tables, analogs such as maps, facsimiles (FAX) of all manner of transmitted materials, audio such as voice or speech and music, video, images, and photographs, provided on storage media utilizing information encoded in the storage media. The storage media are included in one or more reading devices associated with a computer or computers. A storage retrieval device, such as a smart card, is used in conjunction with the computer to determine whether information retrieval by a particular user to specific storage media is granted. The storage media can be sub-divided into a plurality of logical zones and access to all or a portion of the material on the storage media is granted based upon the logical zones to which the user is allowed information retrieval. Information provided on the storage media would include access/information management control device such as index table listing the security identification code, the logical zones to which a particular user is assigned as well as a personal security key used in conjunction with a personal security key provided in the personal access device such as a smart card. The interaction between the user's personal accessing device and the access/information management control device provided on the storage media determine if information retrieval is granted as well as specific information retrieval privileges accorded to the user. The present invention can be embedded in another device or system, such as a facsimile system which would allow a user access to only those messages specifically directed to him. Furthermore, the invention can be used in local area networks, wide area networks, point-to-point communication networks, as well as store-and-forward systems.
TL;DR: In this paper, security events generated by a number of network devices are gathered and normalized to produce normalized security events in a common schema, which are cross-correlated according to rules to generate meta-events.
Abstract: Security events generated by a number of network devices are gathered and normalized to produce normalized security events in a common schema. The normalized security events are cross-correlated according to rules to generate meta-events. The security events may be gathered remotely from a system at which the cross-correlating is performed. Any meta-events that are generated may be reported by generating alerts for display at one or more computer consoles, or by sending an e-mail message, a pager message, a telephone message, and/or a facsimile message to an operator or other individual. In addition to reporting the meta-events, the present system allows for taking other actions specified by the rules, for example executing scripts or other programs to reconfigure one or more of the network devices, and or to modify or update access lists, etc.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a communication system comprising a voice message system for storing and retrieving voice messages and facsimile data, a computer database accessing system for transferring text messages from a separate computer system and converting the text messages into voice messages, and a personal computer.
Abstract: In summary, the present invention is a communication system comprising a voice message system for storing and retrieving voice messages and facsimile data, a computer database accessing system for storing and retrieving text messages from a separate computer system and for converting the text messages into voice messages, and a personal computer which allows a user to generate and receive voices messages, facsimile data, and text messages. The systems are integrated via a network which coordinates the functions of each individual system. Additionally, the input/output ports of the voice message system and the computer database accessing system are connected in a parallel fashion to a personal computer. In this configuration, a user may access voice messages, facsimile messages, and text messages through the personal computer.
TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for facilitating facsimile transmissions has one or more store and forward facilities, each associated with a plurality of subscribers, typically coupled over the switched telephone network.
Abstract: A system and method for facilitating facsimile transmissions has one or more store and forward facilities, each associated with a plurality of subscriber facsimile machines, typically coupled over the switched telephone network. The store and forward facilities include a computer for controlling operations and mass data storage equipment. A subscriber to the system delivers an outgoing facsimile message to the store and forward facility with which it is associated, which records the fax message together with data as to originating facsimile machine and destination facsimile machine. The store and forward facility then delivers the facsimile message to the intended receiver facsimile machine, either directly or through another store and forward facility. If unsuccessful on an initial attempt, the store and forward facility periodically retrys to send the facsimile message. The system also provides spooling of all facsimile messages for an intended receiver machine, which are all transmitted upon making connection with the receiver machine. Subscriber mailboxes are provided as part of the mass storage, which can be accessed by a subscriber to have his messages delivered to any facsimile machine he designates. Secure facsimile transmission is achieved through use of subscriber PIN numbers. Broadcasting, redirecting messages and cost accounting can also be achieved by the system and method.
