Abstract: It is pointed out that most schemes for determining the mass function of virialized objects from the statistics of the initial density perturbation field suffer from the cloud-in-cloud problem of miscounting the number of low-mass clumps, many of which would have been subsumed into larger objects. The paper proposes a solution based on the theory of the excursion sets of F(r, R sub f), the four-dimensional initial density perturbation field smoothed with a continuous hierarchy of filters of radii R sub f.

Abstract: This study was designed to examine the role of foot type, height, leg length, and range of motion (ROM) measurements on excursion distances while performing the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), a test of dynamic postural control. Participants (n = 30) performed 3 trials of the SEBT in each of the 8 directions while balancing on the right and left legs. No statistically significant relations were found between foot type or ROM measurements and excursion distances with the SEBT. Significant correlations were revealed between height and excursion distance and leg length and excursion distance with leg length having the stronger correlation. Using raw excursion measures, males were found to have significantly greater excursion distances than females; however, after normalizing excursion distances to leg length, there were no significant differences related to gender. Abstract: The maximum of a Gaussian random field was used by Worsley et al. (1992) to test for activation at an unknown point in positron emission tomography images of blood flow in the human brain. The Euler characteristic of excursion sets was used as an estimator of the number of regions of activation. The expected Euler characteristic of excursion sets of stationary Gaussian random fields has been derived by Adler and Hasofer (1976) and Adler (1981). In this paper we extend the results of Adler (1981) to χ 2, F and t fields. The theory is applied to some three-dimensional images of cerebral blood flow from a study on pain perception.
