TL;DR: The systematic position of all commonly accepted sauropodomorph dinosaurs from the Lower Elliott Formation of South Africa is reviewed and it is found that none can be positively identified as prosauropod.
Abstract: A new sauropodomorph dinosaur specimen is described and identified as a prosauropod. It is tentatively placed as the sister taxon of Riojasaurus incertus from Argentina. The systematic position of all commonly accepted sauropodomorph dinosaurs from the Lower Elliott Formation of South Africa is reviewed and it is found that none can be positively identified as prosauropod. Euskelosaurus browni is a nomen dubium based on material that cannot be identified further than Sauropodomorpha. Blikanasaurus cromptoni and Antetonitrus ingenipes are basal sauropods. Melanorosaurus readi is probably another basal sauropod but opinion remains divided. Plateosauravus cullingworthi presents conflicting character data and at present is classified as Sauropodomorpha incertae sedis. Consequently the specimen described here represents the only prosauropod specimen currently recognized in the Lower Elliot Formation of South Africa.
TL;DR: The femur of Euskelosaurus brownii is sigmoidal in posterior view with the fourth trochanter well removed from the medial edge as discussed by the authors, which is not a junior synonym of Melanorosaurus readi.
TL;DR: A previously undescribed sauropodomorph dinosaur skull from the upper Elliot Formation of South Africa is shown to be morphologically distinct from the widespread sympatric genus Massospondylus as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A previously undescribed sauropodomorph dinosaur skull
collected from the upper Elliot Formation (lIgMassospondylusl/Ig range
zone) of South Africa is shown to be morphologically distinct from
the widespread sympatric genus Massospondylus. Consequently,
the generic-level diversity of basal sauropodomorphs in the Lower
Jurassic dinosaur fauna of this region was higher than supposed
previously. This unnamed taxon may represent either a new genus,
new material of an established lower Elliot Formation (Euskelosaurus
range zone) sauropodomorph or cranial elements of a
genus currently regarded as synonymous with Massospondylus. As
a result, this specimen has important implications for upper Elliot
Formation palaeoecology and for the use of sauropodomorph
dinosaurs in biostratigraphical correlations.
TL;DR: Recently discovered juvenile dinosaur remains from the Lower Elliot Formation (Upper Triassic) of South Africa can be assigned to Euskelosaurus browni (Huxley), an early prosauropod dinosaur.
