TL;DR: Three network types are compared: the Ethernet bus, with carrier sense multiple access with collision detection, token-passing bus, and controller area network bus, which can be used as a communication backbone for a networked control system connecting sensors, actuators, and controllers.
Abstract: Many different network types have been promoted for use in control systems. In this article, we compare three of them: the Ethernet bus, with carrier sense multiple access with collision detection, token-passing bus (e.g., ControlNet), and controller area network bus (e.g., DeviceNet). We consider how each control network can be used as a communication backbone for a networked control system connecting sensors, actuators, and controllers. A detailed discussion of the medium access control sublayer protocol for each network is provided. For each protocol, we study the key parameters of the corresponding network when used in a control situation, including network utilization, magnitude of the expected time delay, and characteristics of time delays. Simulation results are presented for several different scenarios, and the advantages and disadvantages of each network are summarized.
TL;DR: In this paper, an addressable process control relay comprises a solid-state relay with an embedded network client, which is basically hardware compatible with the physical layer interfaces of a general class of serial networks, and has a variety of downloadable or embedded protocol personalities that can respond to a particular proprietary network.
Abstract: An addressable process control relay comprises a solid-state relay with an embedded network client. Such client is basically hardware compatible with the physical layer interfaces of a general class of serial networks, and has a variety of down-loadable or embedded protocol personalities that can respond to a particular proprietary network. Such protocol personalities are preferred to include: Fieldbus, process field bus (PROFIBUS), Seriplex, smart distributed system (SDS), DeviceNet, controller area network (CAN), etc.
TL;DR: The main technique used in this book is based on the Lyapunov-Razumikhin method, which results in delay-dependent controllers, and the existence of such controllers and fault estimators are given in terms of the solvability of bilinear matrix inequalities.
Abstract: Robust Control for Uncertain Networked Control Systems with Random Delays addresses the problem of analysis and design of networked control systems when the communication delays are varying in a random fashion. The random nature of the time delays is typical for commercially used networks, such as a DeviceNet (which is a controller area network) and Ethernet network. The main technique used in this book is based on the Lyapunov-Razumikhin method, which results in delay-dependent controllers. The existence of such controllers and fault estimators are given in terms of the solvability of bilinear matrix inequalities. Iterative algorithms are proposed to change this non-convex problem into quasi-convex optimization problems, which can be solved effectively by available mathematical tools. Finally, to demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed design method in the book, numerical examples are given in each designed control system.
TL;DR: The focus of this book is 'outside the box', which goes beyond typical communications issues and theory to provide the necessary toolkit of knowledge to solve industrial communications problems covering RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Ethernet and TCP/IP.
Abstract: There are many data communications titles covering design, installation, etc, but almost none that specifically focus on industrial networks, which are an essential part of the day-to-day work of industrial control systems engineers, and the main focus of an increasingly large group of network specialists. The focus of this book makes it uniquely relevant to control engineers and network designers working in this area. The industrial application of networking is explored in terms of design, installation and troubleshooting, building the skills required to identify, prevent and fix common industrial data communications problems - both at the design stage and in the maintenance phase. The focus of this book is 'outside the box'. The emphasis goes beyond typical communications issues and theory to provide the necessary toolkit of knowledge to solve industrial communications problems covering RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Ethernet and TCP/IP. The idea of the book is that in reading it you should be able to walk onto your plant, or facility, and troubleshoot and fix communications problems as quickly as possible. This book is the only title that addresses the nuts-and-bolts issues involved in design, installation and troubleshooting that are the day-to-day concern of engineers and network specialists working in industry.
TL;DR: This book provides the knowledge required to analyze, specify and debug data communications systems in the instrumentation and control environment and provides a solid grounding in the various Fieldbus and DeviceNet standards on the market today.
Abstract: Instrumentation and control systems are highly reliant on data communications, so a working knowledge of the latest communications technologies and the essential protocols is essential for anyone designing, specifying or using instrumentation and control systems. This book is the only title on the market designed specifically for this audience. This is a comprehensive treatment of industrial data communication systems. Commencing with a thorough discussion of the popular RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 standards it then moves on to industrial protocols, industrial networks and the communication requirements for the 'smart' instrumentation which is becoming de rigeur in industry today. The book also provides a solid grounding in the various Fieldbus and DeviceNet standards on the market today.
