Abstract: A virus and intrusion protection apparatus for use with a personal computer or the like, and a computer network that adds a dedicated network board for exclusive communications with an external network, the World-Wide-Web and email. The dedicated network board includes the necessary duplicated computing components to isolate the Main Core of the computer or network server from external communications with the World-Wide-Web such as a central processing unit, memory, communications ports, needed modems, etc. During external communications, a switch connecting the dedicated network board to the Main Core of the computer or network server is opened. Booby trap ghost address book and ghost directories are added in the access board to trap new viruses that is not detected by the existing inspection programs.

Abstract: The term communication control unit was a generic term used in the 1980s to refer to a wide variety of devices that controlled the transmission and reception of data in computer networks. They ranged from complex units, such as front-end processors for mainframes, to simple units such as concentrators, terminal servers, or multiplexers of various kinds for transmission of data primarily over dedicated lines. The 1990s saw dramatic advances in data communications and the appearance of new generations of communication devices to build today's computer networks. They include various types of communication adapters, hubs, bridges, routers, and switches. Consequently, the term communication control unit is being replaced by two new generic terms: communication adapters, which interface computers and workstations (q.v.) to the network, and network electronics, which serve to deliver data over the network from source to destination.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a copy-protected dedicated software application and methods for downloading copy-protected dedicated applications to user stations so that the unique dedicated applications are executable upon downloading to the user station and so that the unique dedicated applications will only run on that particular authorized user station. A method of downloading the unique dedicated applications directly from a distributor to the user station is also included which eliminates the need for contact between the original manufacturer of an application and the user station.

Abstract: Separate forward dedicated and shared control channels (17, 18) are provided in a spread-spectrum communication. The forward dedicated control channel (18) is used to communicate persistent control information and point to the shared control channel (17) when further intermittent control information concerning transmission of data to a mobile station (14) needs to be communicated. The use of a dedicated control channel for only necessary persistent control information, while only pointing to a shared control channel when it is needed, affords more efficient utilization of system resources.

A disclosed method provides a customer with first and second access ports to a circuit based communications network. Each access port has at least one associated bandwidth attribute. The method configures the communications network to route traffic between the first and second access ports in response to an operator of the communications network.
