TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the damage to the deck of a 13 span viaduct in Norfolk by road salts, the testing of the concrete to establish areas needing repair, and the remedial works carried out.
Abstract: Since the mid 1960's large amounts of de-icing salts have been used in winter to prevent the formation of ice on main roads. Many bridges built prior to that time have no adequate protection against the harmful effects of these chloride salts on their reinforced concrete deck slabs. The paper describes the damage to the deck of a 13 span viaduct in Norfolk by road salts, the testing of the concrete to establish areas needing repair, and the remedial works carried out. The use of a half cell potential test to detect possible corrosion of the reinforcement is reported and the factors influencing the susceptibility of bridge decks to attack by chloride salts are discussed. TL;DR: In this paper, a method for towing a gravity base, a jack-up platform, as a unit, to a preselected offshore site floating upon the gravity hull is described.
Abstract: Offshore, gravity base, jack-up platform comprising a deck (22), a gravity base (24), and one or more legs (26) interconnecting the deck and base. The gravity base comprises a generally polygonal shaped, monolithic hull structure (28) with reaction members (30) extending downwardly from the hull to penetrate the waterbed and react to vertical and lateral loads imposed upon the platform while maintaining the gravity hull in a posture elevated above the surface of the waterbed. A method aspect of the invention includes the steps of towing a gravity base, jack-up platform, as a unit, to a preselected offshore site floating upon the gravity hull. During the towing operation, the deck is mounted adjacent the gravity base with leg or legs projecting through the deck. At a preselected offshore station ballast is added to the gravity base and the platform descends slightly to a posture where the platform is buoyantly supported by the deck. The base is then jacked down toward the seabed and the platform is laterally brought onto station. Ballast is then added to the deck and the reaction members are penetrated into the waterbed to operational soil refusal. Ballast is then ejected from the deck and the deck is jacked to an operational elevation above a predetermined statistical wave crest height.

Abstract: A lift ring device for installation in the forward portion of the deck of a boat or other item that may need from time to time to be lifted, which device can be retracted when not in use, thus to leave the deck of the boat relatively uncluttered. The lift ring (20, 60) is disposed in a slotted deck plate (12, 52) and out of this slot the lift ring may be readily lifted so that it can serve either as a deck cleat, or in the lifting or towing of the boat. A lower, rod-like portion (26, 66) is integral with the lift ring, and this rod-like portion is slidable in an elongate structural member (16, 56) attached to the underside of the deck plate. We use a compression spring (28, 68) around the rod-like portion in order to insure retraction of the lift ring when not in use, and a sturdy weight bearing device is provided on the lowermost end of the rod-like portion to assure that the lift ring will not separate from the deck plate during the lifting of the boat. The lowermost part of the elongate structural member is provided with a rotatable device (46, 86) to receive the upper, threaded end of a rod attached to the keel of the boat, such that no turnbuckle is required in securing the lift ring device firmly to the keel.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the thermal behavior of concrete bridges in the United Kingdom and found that both daily and annual maximum values of movement may be predicted from a knowledge of the temperature of the deck, which, in turn, may be derived from the variation in the shade air temperature.
Abstract: One of the research programmes in progress at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory is to investigate the thermal behaviour of concrete bridges in the United Kingdom. Part of the work involved the measurement of the longitudinal movement of bridge decks caused by changes in temperature. Some of these measurements of movement were made continuously for periods of up to five years at any one site and the types of bridge instrumented include concrete box (single and multi-cell), concrete beam and slab and solid concrete deck. A brief description of the instrumentation is given and the results discussed include measured values of daily and annual ranges of movement, the seasonal effect on the measured movement of shrinkage of the concrete and short and long term values of the coefficient of thermal expansion of the deck. It is also shown how both daily and annual maximum values of movement may be predicted from a knowledge of the temperature of the deck, which, in turn, may be derived from the variation in the shade air temperature. This knowledge enables the bearings and expansion joints to be set at their correct positions within the design range of thermal movement of the deck. (Author/TRRL)

TL;DR: In this paper, a launching and recovery boat is supported by a boat and a boat's cradle on trackways extending inwardly and upwardly from the deck of the vessel by roller assemblies at the base of the boat.
Abstract: A launching and recovery apparatus for a lifeboat, rescue launch or like small boat fitted to a ship, floating or fixed marine platform or other vessel which is controlled by a single fall comprises a launching and recovery cradle 7 from which a boat can hang freely on a releaseable support. During its travel between a fully hoisted and a partly lowered position the boat and cradle are supported on trackways 2 extending inwardly and upwardly from the deck of the vessel by roller assemblies 31, 32 at the base of the cradle which run on respective trackways. The cradle 7 has a symmetrical upwardly convergent frame 35, 36, 37 whose apex is arranged for connection of the single fall wire 43 by which the cradle is held in a stable attitude during launching and recovery with the boat suspended freely from the cradle on a single releaseable support 38. A single sheave 15 located above the cradle symmetrically between the trackways 2a takes up or pays out the fall wire 43, to raise or lower the cradle 7. The boat is suspended from a position well above its center of gravity which assists stability in roll and pitch and the arrangement is of simplified construction and uses less moving parts than previous designs of cradle launched boats.
TL;DR: In this article, the behavior of a continuous, steel-concrete composite box girder bridge was monitored during construction of the concrete deck and during the first three years of operation, and it was observed that cracking developed in the deck which was attributed to the temperature developed in a deck shortly after casting, the sequence of casting, shrinkage of the deck concrete, and the rapid heating of the steel boxes exposed to direct sunlight.
Abstract: The behaviour of a continuous, steel-concrete composite box girder bridge was monitored during construction of the concrete deck and during the first three years of operation. It was observed that cracking developed in the deck which was attributed to the temperature developed in the deck shortly after casting, the sequence of casting, the shrinkage of the deck concrete, and the rapid heating of the steel boxes exposed to direct sunlight. It was also found that the strain distributions across the depth and the width of the steel boxes are more or less linear. This beam theory can be applied with confidence for the design of this type of structure.

Abstract: A tire building machine including an axially contractible and expandable drum is characterized by an annularly continuous center deck for the drum having a rigid, axially segmented yet continuous, generally cylindrical deck surface. The center deck includes a center support, end supports, and two symmetrically arranged sets of telescoping rings extending respectively between the center support and opposite end supports. The telescoping rings are axially expandable as the end supports move away from each other to form such rigid, axially continuous deck surface and axially collapsible into or upon one another as the end supports move toward each other. Each ring of the set has flanged ends forming both a stop and an annular sliding bearing surface for the adjacent ring. The rings and their flanges may be precisely formed so that each intermediate ring of the ring set has four annular supporting and sliding surfaces, contributing to the overall rigidity of the deck. Tire components may be applied and firmly stitched directly on the deck surface or an axially elastic sleeve may be employed. The sleeve, secured to each end support, has a substantially cylindrical outer diameter and an inner diameter conforming to the deck surface when axially expanded.
