Abstract: Predictably, certain patients present treatment issues which resonate strongly with issues that are still problematic (unconscious and/or only partially resolved) for the therapist. This paper examines the author's professional/personal development over forty years, beginning with reflections about a countertransference enactment triggered by an acting-out African American child whose father, his primary caregiver, had abandoned him at age 18 months. The potential dangers and benefits of therapist grandiosity are also considered.
