TL;DR: The analyst should approach the choice of the theoretical constructs at least as carefully as he would the selection of statistical methodology, with due consideration for its effectiveness in the role contemplated.
Abstract: Phrases commonly used by economists often tell more about our intellectual habits than is realized. One such phrase is "received theory," which carries the connotation that theory has been received from on high, perhaps inscribed on a new tablet, and the empirical analyst merely takes the theory as provided and proceeds with his analysis. Such a practice is to be avoided in many cases but especially so in the area of household consumption behavior. The analyst should approach the choice of the theoretical constructs at least as carefully as he would the selection of statistical methodology, with due consideration for its effectiveness in the role contemplated. Measures of what consumers do and of why they do those things are needed. The why's must be in terms of observable phenomena in order to be useful to the analyst, as theory that cannot be put into measurable forms is not useful.
TL;DR: The Political Economy of Fascism Dipankar Gupta as mentioned in this paper is a concept that is used more as a pejorative term than one having a rigorous theoretical connotation, and a failure to come to grips with its cultural and structural significance has frequently brought Left forces to grief.
Abstract: The Political Economy of Fascism Dipankar Gupta Fascism is a concept that is used more as a pejorative term than one having a rigorous theoretical connotation. The unprincipled flogging of the term, and a failure to come to grips with its cultural and structural significance has frequently brought Left forces to grief.
Abstract: To the Editor.— The interesting article by McGowen (237:673, 1977) in a recent issue is commendable for the frequent use of the term "Down syndrome" but is marred by the unfortunate use of the term "mongolism" in the legend of Fig 2. Surely, the sooner this unfortunate bit of terminology with racist connotation is obliterated entirely, the better.
TL;DR: One of the enduring constructs that exist in intellectual life is the concept of dualism as discussed by the authors, based on Cartesian analysis and broadened by popular connotation, dualistic perspectives allow the world to be conceived as the tension between opposing forces: good and evil; open and closed; physical and spiritual; practical and theoretical.
Abstract: One of the enduring constructs that exist in intellectual life is the concept of dualism. Based on Cartesian analysis and broadened by popular connotation, dualistic perspectives allow the world to be conceived as the tension between opposing forces: good and evil; open and closed; physical and spiritual; practical and theoretical. When transitions between any set of extremes are abrupt, conflict emerges. Unsmoothed or abrupt divisions of internal psychological states are termed schizoid-and that brings me to my reaction to the book.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the activities, roles and organisational systems of management development and identify the ideals, images, and reality of the management development process, which brings us closer to the various meanings the term can have and may give insight into some important covert social processes of business enterprises.
Abstract: Management development, in common with such terms as democracy and participation, has its meaning suffused with a sense of goodness; it is difficult to find a negative connotation. When, however, the activities, roles and organisational systems of management development are examined it is possible to differentiate among the ideals, images and realities of management development which brings us closer to the various meanings the term can have. Such an analysis may give insight into some important covert social processes of business enterprises.
