Abstract: An experiment was conducted to determine the relative importance of three map attributes (correlation, blackness and complexity) for judging the similarity of choropleth maps. Subjects rated pairs of maps prepared using two different map classing algorithms according to the map pairs' visual similarity. By relating cognitive measures of visual similarity to objective measures of the three map attributes, the relative importance of correlation, blackness and complexity to the subjects' decision-making process was determined. Using several analyses of variance procedures it was concluded that blackness was the most important attribute for judging similarity followed by correlation and complexity, in that order. It was also determined that the particular maps sued, i.e., those constructed using different classing algorithms, significantly affected the map readers' use of correlation, blackness and complexity information. TL;DR: The box-and-whisker diagram as mentioned in this paper is a simple but effective device for portraying frequency distributions clearly, accurately, and fully, and is a useful means for providing legends and category divisions for choropleth maps, being capable of handling skewed distributions without suppressing the skewness.
Abstract: The box-and-whisker diagram, described here, is a simple but effective device for portraying frequency distributions clearly, accurately, and fully. It is a useful means for providing legends and category divisions for choropleth maps, being capable of handling skewed distributions without suppressing the skewness. Maps are used to illustrate the utility of the method for examining different types of distributions and for making map comparisons to discover relationships among variables.

Abstract: To satisfy the cartographic requirements for spatial analysis, planning and forecast on the federal level in West Germany the Federal Research Institute for Regional Geography and Regional Planning established a system for computer-assisted production of thematic maps. Development priority was given to choropleth and graduated symbol maps as the most important mapping techniques to display spatial disparities. Other, less frequently used techniques, e. g. network display, surface representation, perspective drawings, etc., have also been implemented to provide additional aids for visualization, and to reduce the bottlenecks in the manual production process.
