TL;DR: The feeding rate by individual predators increased at increased prey densities, with both the coccinellids showing the Type II functional response.
Abstract: The functional response in terms of prey consumption and numerical response in terms of number of eggs laid by individual female adult predators of Coccinella transversalis Fab. and Cheilomenes (Menochilus) sexmaculatus Fab. (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) at varied prey (Aphis gossypii Glover) (Aphididae: Homoptera) densities were investigated under laboratory conditions. The feeding rate by individual predators increased at increased prey densities, with both the coccinellids showing the Type II functional response. One hundred percent prey consumption was observed up to an initial prey density of 50 and 20 for Co. transversalis and Ch. sexmaculatus respectively. The fecundity of Co. transversalis increased at higher prey densities, but that of Ch. sexmaculatus remained unchanged.
TL;DR: The results reveal the high thermal and light sensitivities of C. sexmaculata, which highlight the importance of environment regulation in the mass rearing of this natural enemy for application as a biological control in agroecosystems in China.
Abstract: The polyphagous predatory ladybird Cheilomenes. sexmaculata (F.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is distributed throughout southern China and has been investigated as a potential biological control agent against herbivorous insects in various agroecosystems. In the current study, we evaluated the preimaginal development, eclosion rate, reproduction, fertility, adult longevity, and prey consumption of C. sexmaculata under five temperature and five photoperiod regimens. The results showed that preadult developmental duration decreased significantly with increasing temperature and amount of daylight. Adult eclosion rate was highest at 35 degrees C and under conditions of complete darkness. Higher temperatures shortened the duration of copulation and preoviposition, prolonged the duration of oviposition, and increased the level of fecundity. Hatchability was highest at 30 degrees C. By contrast, the shortest copulation and oviposition duration and lowest level of fecundity and hatchability occurred with a completely dark photoperiod. Temperature and the gender of C. sexmaculata influenced adult longevity. In addition, there was a significant interaction effect of photoperiod and gender on adult longevity. Furthermore, prey consumption by fourth instar larvae and adult females both increased with increasing temperature and photoperiod. Our results reveal the high thermal and light sensitivities of C. sexmaculata, which highlight the importance of environment regulation in the mass rearing of this natural enemy for application as a biological control in agroecosystems in China.
TL;DR: Field studies on menazon-sprayed and unsprayed plants closely or widely spaced showed that aphid numbers increased rapidly on the groundnut crop 31–45 days from emergence but declined rapidly as the plants matured, and spraying with menazon prevented breeding by incoming alates.
Abstract: Observations on Aphis craccivora Koch at Serere, Uganda, in 1964–68 showed that dry season carry-over of aphids could occur on the common weeds Euphorbia hirta and E. prostrata; at other times aphids were seen on Gliricidia sepium, Cassia tora, Centrosema pubescens and Macroptilium atropurpureum, the last two being increasingly used as pasture legumes. In pot tests, attempts to transfer the virus through G. sepium, Cassia tora, Stylosanthes guianensis and Centrosema pubescens were unsuccessful. Volunteer groundnuts growing in open situations were an important source of virus and vector. Field studies on menazon-sprayed and unsprayed plants closely or widely spaced showed that aphid numbers increased rapidly on the groundnut crop 31–45 days from emergence but declined rapidly as the plants matured. Superficially the plants appeared to be free of aphids but large populations were often found on hypanthia, flowers and gynophores. Coccinellids, especially Cheilomenes sulphurea (Ol), were important predators. Aphid numbers were far higher on groundnuts with low plant densities, possibly because the number of favoured feeding sites is increased, but the number of plants infested was not significantly different at high and low densities. Yellow panels had little effect on aphid numbers. Spraying with menazon (294 g active ingredient/ha, 5 times) prevented breeding by incoming alates.
TL;DR: The number of prey consumed daily by each predator stage tested, increased more steeply at lower than at higher prey densities, exhibiting thus the type 2 functional response.
Abstract: Consumption of larvae and females ofAphis craccivora Koch by 1st and 4th larvae and adults ofCheilomenes vicina (Muls.) was studied under fluctuating temperature (24–30°C). The early aphid instars were consumed in significantly greater numbers than later instars and females. The feeding rates ofC. vicina were significantly positively correlated with the population density of prey. The number of prey consumed daily by each predator stage tested, increased more steeply at lower than at higher prey densities, exhibiting thus the type 2 functional response
