Social Engineering Resistant 2FA

[...]

Markus Jakobsson
16 Jan 2020-arXiv: Cryptography and Security
TL;DR: This work introduces a social engineering resistant approach that is device-aware 2FA, to replace the use of traditional security codes, and aims to replace second factor authentication (2FA) codes in the connected world.
Abstract: Attackers increasingly, and with high success rates, use social engineering techniques to circumvent second factor authentication (2FA) technologies, compromise user accounts and sidestep fraud detection technologies. We describe an approach, replacing the use of traditional security codes, that thwarts social engineering attacks on 2FA without relying on user risk awareness. Our approach is compatible with existing systems, and offers a similar user experience to that of traditional security code methods. It protects both against user-facing social engineering attacks and attacks, such as SIM card hijacking attacks, where the social engineering is applied to a service provider of the victim.

TL;DR: The didactic concept of the course along with the required modifications due to the COVID-19 pandemic are described and the experience from remote teaching the class during the summer term affected by the pandemic is reported.
Abstract: IT security is an important aspect of system design and of quality assurance during the software engineering process. Today, there is a big demand for IT security specialists in job markets around the world. Increased automation of security code reviews is one approach for mitigating the current shortage of IT security professionals. We designed the course “Formal Methods for IT Security” to teach undergraduate students the basics of constraint solving and formal modeling techniques suitable for automation of IT security code reviews in a hands-on format. In this paper, we describe the didactic concept of the course along with the required modifications due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, we report our experience from remote teaching the class during the summer term affected by the pandemic. The main pandemic-related challenge we tackled during the course is establishing communication and stimulation of the discussions required for learning in projects without any presence meetings.

TL;DR: To achieve the objectives of the ISPS Code, all Contracting Countries should fully implement its regulations and for achieving a higher standards in maintaining maritime security they are advised to take advantage of the experiences and practices of such successful countries as Malaysia and South Korea in fulfilling the regulations of theISPS Code.
Abstract: Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was faced with the issue of maritime security against terrorist incidents. Accordingly, it adopted the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) in December 2002 as part of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS 1974- as amended) in order to increase maritime security through fulfilling its regulations by Contracting Governments. This Code, entered into force on 1 July 2004, provides a set of regulations for ship and port facility security. The first part of this paper focuses on the introduction and analysis of the key regulations of the ISPS Code. The second part of this paper focuses on the successful practices of two Contracting Governments, namely Malaysia and South Korea. Accordingly, this paper evaluates the enforcement of the regulations of the ISPS Code by concentrating on these two countries in East Asia in order to measure the effectiveness of the Code in enhancing maritime security of these two countries. This paper concludes that to achieve the objectives of the ISPS Code, all Contracting Countries should fully implement its regulations and for achieving a higher standards in maintaining maritime security they are advised to take advantage of the experiences and practices of such successful countries as Malaysia and South Korea in fulfilling the regulations of the ISPS Code. The research method applied in this paper is based on the descriptive - analytical method.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method for securing secure data for a bank card associated with a bank account, in which secure data are static and include the number of said card, identification data of the holder of the card, the expiration date of the said card and a security code consisting of a plurality of numbers and/or letters.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for securing secure data for a bank card associated with a bank account, which secure data are static and include the number of said card, identification data of the holder of said card, the expiration date of said card, and a security code, which bank card number and which security code consist of a plurality of numbers and/or letters, characterized in that the method includes the steps of: - only partially writing the secure data on said card such that secure data are concealed and never visible on said card, which concealed data are formed by: a plurality of numbers and/or letters of the number of said card and/or at least one identification datum of the holder and/or at least one element of the expiration date and/or at least one number and/or letter of the security code; - transmitting, to the holder of the card alone, a means for revealing the concealed data.

Abstract: In today's world of E-Commerce everything comes online like Music,E-Books, Shopping all most everything is online. If you are using some service or buying things online then you have to pay for that. For that you have to do Net Banking or you have to use Credit card which will do online payment for you. In today's environment when everything is online, the service you are using for E-Payment must be secure and you must protect your banking information like debit card or credit card information from possible threat of hacking. There were lots way to threat like Key logger, Forgery Detection, Phishing, Shoulder surfing. Therefore, we reveal our actual information of Bank and Credit Card then there will be a chance to lose data and same credit card and hackers can use banking information for malicious purpose. In this paper we discuss available E-Payment protocols, examine its advantages and delimitation's and shows that there are steel needs to design a more secure E-Payment protocol. The suggested protocol is based on using hash function and using dynamic or virtual password, which protects your banking or credit card information from possible threat of hacking when doing online transactions.

The evolution of card payment technology: how security risk drives innovation in financial services

Abstract: <p>The evolution of card payment technology has revolutionized financial services, enabling seamless, secure, and<br>efficient transactions. From the early days of magnetic stripe cards to the introduction of EMV chip technology,<br>the industry has continuously innovated to enhance security and protect against fraud. With the rise of digital<br>transactions, new threats have emerged, driving advancements in encryption, tokenization, and biometric<br>authentication to safeguard consumer data. Security concerns have played a pivotal role in shaping card payment<br>technologies. The transition from static card data to dynamic authentication methods, such as contactless payments<br>and cryptographic protocols, has significantly reduced vulnerabilities to fraud and identity theft. Furthermore,<br>regulatory frameworks such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and Strong<br>Customer Authentication (SCA) have enforced stricter compliance requirements, compelling financial institutions<br>and merchants to adopt robust security measures. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are now<br>integral to fraud detection and prevention, analyzing vast transaction datasets to identify anomalies and mitigate<br>risks in real-time. Additionally, the emergence of blockchain technology and decentralized finance (DeFi) presents<br>new opportunities for secure and transparent payment processing. This paper explores the technological<br>milestones in card payments, the role of security in driving innovation, and future trends in financial transaction<br>security. As cyber threats evolve, ongoing research and development in encryption algorithms, quantum-resistant<br>security, and AI-driven fraud detection will be crucial in sustaining the trust and reliability of card payment<br>systems worldwide.</p>
