Abstract: As system and method are provided for communicating weather conditions to remote locations, such as inside of residential homes, offices, or businesses. In accordance with one embodiment, a modified smoke detector is provided having an integrated RF receiver for receiving message packets containing information that may be conveyed through its speaker, buzzer, or other sound-emanating device. In accordance with another embodiment, a system is provided. The system which may include a mechanism for detecting a weather condition, a wireless transmitter in communication with the mechanism for detecting a weather condition, wherein the wireless transmitter configured to receive a signal from the means for detecting a weather condition and transmit a corresponding signal via electromagnetic waves. The system may also include a receiver remotely located from the wireless transmitter, the receiver configured to receive the electromagnetic signal transmitted from the smoke detector. Finally, the system may include a sound-emanating device, and a sound control mechanism for controlling the sound-emanating device, wherein the sound control mechanism is responsive to the electromagnetic signal received by the receiver. In yet another embodiment, a method is provided. The method includes steps of: (1) determining that a weather condition (e.g., severe weather condition) exists, (2) transmitting a radio frequency (RF) signal containing information about the weather condition, (3) receiving the RF signal with a RF receiver disposed in a smoke detector (or other device), and (4) sounding a buzzer (or other sound emanating device) in response to receiving the RF signal.

The appliance may transmit information (such as diagnostic or fault codes and appliance usage information) to a remote service center without the need for a physical connection to a telephone line. The buzzer may be controlled to produce audible tones in a predetermined format which can be transmitted from the appliance, through the air and down a telephone line through a telephone handset to the service center. The signal is recorded at the service center and the data extracted. The data is then analyzed to obtain the fault and/or usage information.

Abstract: Our purpose is to automatically detect in real time the fall of the person from a single device, worn on the trunk in the "para sagittal" plane. The device includes 2 accelerometers, an 8 bits RISC microcontroller, a buzzer and a push button. It is serially linked to a RF-modem. It was tested on 10 healthy young persons in 15 different situations and exhibits good specificity and sensibility. Improvements can be made on the decision algorithm using non standard theories.

Abstract: A water-activated alarm system, providing an alarm in the event of a water leak, includes a radio-frequency transmitting unit and a receiving unit and a number of safety features to ensure proper operation in the event of an emergency. The transmitting unit includes a flood detector having electrodes to be placed in a flood prone area, a tone encoder, for sending an encoded signal in the event of a flood, and means to provide visible and audible alarm indications, including a buzzer and a user-programmable digital voice circuit for identification of the area in which a flood occurs. The receiving unit includes a superheterodyne receiver or a super-regenerative receiver and detector, a tone decoder to prevent false alarms, a battery charger, a solenoid valve for shutting off the flow of water in the event to a leak detected by the transmitting unit, and a freeze-guard circuit using a peltier device to keep the solenoid valve within a temperature range allowing valve operation during freezing weather conditions.
