Abstract: The Smeaton Project is a joint research program involving ICCROM, English Heritage, and Bournemouth University. It was established for the purpose of characterizing the chemical and physical properties of lime-based mortars intended for the repair and conservation of historic buildings. In Phase I of the program, the authors used a variety of test procedures to evaluate the effect of set additives, specifically brick dust and cements, on the performance of lime:sand mortars. The principal objective of this initial phase was to confirm various trends in the behavior of lime-based mortars observed in the field and to refine test procedures. The results of Phase I are presented though the authors caution that these are only preliminary and further testing is needed. Preliminary findings suggest that the addition of brick dust significantly alters the properties of lime mortars and that low fired brick dusts seem to have the most positive effect on the strength and durability of lime:sand:brick dust mixtures. The addition of small quantities of cement to lime:sand:mortars seemed to have a negative effect on the strength and durability of the mortars.

Abstract: An apparatus for forming a tyne layer in an automatic brick stacking system having a conveyor for moving courses of brick from a kiln car to a stacking and straping station is disclosed. The apparatus includes a set-down transfer head for removing a course of brick from the conveyor. A separation conveyor receives brick from the set-down transfer head. The separation conveyor has a plurality of parallel, spaced-apart conveying means for moving the bricks in a longitudinal direction. A stop means engages and stops the movement of bricks therepast. A lift means is disposed between the conveying means and between one end of the separation conveyor and the stop means for lifting and redepositing a portion of the bricks upstream of the stop means. The conveying means, stop means, and first lift means are sequentially operated in a cooperative relationship to space the rows of brick apart in the longitudinal direction of conveyance and at predetermined intervals to form the tyne layer. A tyne pick-up head removes the tyne layer from the separation conveyor and deposits it on the conveyor where it is moved to the stacking and straping station.

Abstract: A brick panel construction apparatus including a stiff backing member such as a polystyrene insulated board is laminated to a water impermeable sheet which is primarily planar in shape. A plurality of integrally formed projections are disposed in a plurality of horizontal rows on the impermeable sheet whereby these projections and the sheet constitute a one-piece structure. A plurality of spaced apart thin bricks are adhesively attached to the sheet and the bricks are disposed between the rows of projections. Grout is then applied to the spaces between the bricks and covers the rest of the sheet, including the projections. Brackets are utilized to attach the thin sheet and backing member to a vertical sub-straight and these brackets have a planar portion for allowing the fastener to pass through it, through the thin sheet and through the backing member to a vertical structural member. These brackets also have a top portion which supports the bottom of any brick it is under and also provides a mortar lock for ensuring that the mortar does not separate from the thin sheet.

Abstract: Flexible concrete structures resemble elongated rope-like articles having an outer textile casing in the form of a mono-tubular body with a continuous inner bore filled with dry cementitious material. The concrete ropes are naturally permeable to water for controlled chemical hydration for maximizing structural values and load bearing properties. The flexible concrete ropes may be employed in a wide range of applications in masonry and cement construction, such as caulk filler between foundations and roadways; as convenient mortar ropes in the reinforcement and stabilization of stone, rock, brick and block structures, like culvert bridges, drainage ditches, railroad roadbeds; temporary templates for A-frame structures, and as chocks for dry foundations. Flexible concrete rope articles can be wetted and woven into grids and lattice structures for use as fencing, gates, grids for fireplaces and grills or fabricated into subterranean anchoring supports for posts and signs for the elimination of large amounts of pourable concrete normally required.
