TL;DR: The wide geographical distribution of water hyacinth along with the anatomical study of different plant parts and the methodologies adopted for the production of Xylitol has been included.
Abstract: At present Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipses) have been ranked as one of the world's worst invasive weeds causing problems to millions of users of water resources. It is known as "Blue Devil" or "Bengal terror" in India, "Florida devil" in South Africa, "German weed" in Bangladesh and "Water terror" by South Western Nigeria 1 with its disruptive impacts on aquatic ecosystem, agriculture, fisheries, production from electricity from hydral power plants, transportation, living conditions and social structures. In last few decades, a special interest has been drawn on this weed for utilising it as an effective water hyacinth biomass (WHB) for production of biofuel, fertilizers, paper etc. It is also utilised in bioremediation and waste water treatment. In this paper the wide geographical distribution of water hyacinth along with the anatomical study of different plant parts and the methodologies adopted for the production of Xylitol has been included. Xylitol is a 5 C sugar poly-alcohol obtained from hemicelluloses of WHB by hydrolysis and fermentation, a sugar substitute for diabetic patients, harmless food , non toxic with many other beneficial role to mankind.
TL;DR: Through the construction and programming of two demonstration robots, readers will learn advanced MINDSTORMS programming techniques and lots of projects and clear step-by-step instructions for building custom sensors in Extreme Mindstorms.
Abstract: From the Publisher:
- The four contributing authors, Dave Baum, Michael Gasperi, Ralph Hempel, and Luis Villa, are well-known authorities on LEGO MINDSTORMS
- Discusses advanced programming techniques using RCX 2.0 firmware, pbForth, and legOS with lots of sample programs
- Includes lots of projects and clear step-by-step instructions for building custom sensors
Extreme Mindstorms is for LEGO MINDSTORMS enthusiasts of all ages who are interested in special projects and new programming methods. Through the construction and programming of two demonstration robots, readers will learn advanced MINDSTORMS programming techniques. The book covers the use of RCX 2.0, pbForth, and legoOS. Each author has written a section of the book based on that author's specialty. Dave Baum is the creator of NQC and Ralph Hempel is the creator of pbForth. Luis Villa has maintained an extensive collection of information on legOS, and Michael Gasperi is an authority on constructing custom Mindstorms sensors. Numerous sensor assembly projects are presented with simple systematic instructions, and though the topics covered are advanced, readers should be able to assemble the projects and understand how they work without any prior knowledge of electronics.
Author Biography: Dave Baum is the creator of NQC, a powerful language for programming Mindstorms robot. He is also the author of Dave Baum's Definitive Guide to LEGO MINDSTORMS, a book that has appealed to a wide audience of readers from children to adults. Baum is currently a Principal Staff Engineer at Motorola. He holds a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ralph Hempel is a professional engineer who specializes in embedded systems design. Ralph holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. LEGO had been a part of Ralph's life since the late 1960s, but when he bought a set for his son Owen in 1997, the flame was rekindled. Besides building original Technic and Town models with his family, Ralph enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking, and playing blues harmonica.
Luis Villa is an undergraduate at Duke University studying Computer Science. He rediscovered Lego and became an expert in legOS while preparing to become a Teacher's Assistant for a Duke course that used LEGO Mindstorms. Luis writes and maintains the legOS HOWTO which can be found on the web at http://legOS.sourceforge.net/HOWTO. Besides maintaining the legOS HOWTO, Luis spends his spare time studying political theory and attending lots of Blue Devil basketball games.
Michael Gasperi works as a Principal Engineer with the Advanced Technology division of Rockwell Automation. He became involved with homebuilding custom sensors for LEGO MINDSTORMS shortly after it was introduced in 1997. Since then his web site has become the central depository for sensor ideas and plans. During his 22 years of experience as a professional engineer he has developed many industrial electronic products as well as published hobbyist articles in the fields of model rocketry, amateur radio, pinhole photography and crystal radio.
TL;DR: It is suggested that the current depth range of eastern blue devil fish is being underestimated at 30 m, which potentially represents a large area of deep offshore reefs and micro-habitats out on the continental shelf that could contribute to the resilience of easternblue devil fish to extinction risk and contribute toThe resilience of many reef species to climate change.
Abstract: The accepted geographic range of a species is related to both opportunity and effort in sampling that range In deepwater ecosystems where human access is limited, the geographic ranges of many marine species are likely to be underestimated A chance recording from baited cameras deployed on deep uncharted reef revealed an eastern blue devil fish (Paraplesiops bleekeri) at a depth of 51 m and more than 2 km further down the continental shelf slope than previously observed This is the first verifiable observation of eastern blue devil fish, a protected and endemic southeastern Australian temperate reef species, at depths greater than the typically accepted depth range of 30 m Knowledge on the ecology of this and many other reef species is indeed often limited to shallow coastal reefs, which are easily accessible by divers and researchers Suitable habitat for many reef species appears to exist on deeper offshore reefs but is likely being overlooked due to the logistics of conducting research on these often uncharted habitats On the basis of our observation at a depth of 51 m and observations by recreational fishers catching eastern blue devil fishes on deep offshore reefs, we suggest that the current depth range of eastern blue devil fish is being underestimated at 30 m We also observed several common reef species well outside of their accepted depth range Notably, immaculate damsel (Mecaenichthys immaculatus), red morwong (Cheilodactylus fuscus), mado (Atypichthys strigatus), white-ear (Parma microlepis) and silver sweep (Scorpis lineolata) were abundant and recorded in a number of locations at up to a depth of at least 55 m This underestimation of depth potentially represents a large area of deep offshore reefs and micro habitats out on the continental shelf that could contribute to the resilience of eastern blue devil fish to extinction risk and contribute to the resilience of many reef species to climate change
TL;DR: Seibert as discussed by the authors described pyrogen as a "little blue devil" that appeared in all flasks, all water, and in everything he worked with, and called it "Little Blue Devil" because it was there and not there.
Abstract: Dr. Seibert: “I started to work with the pyrogen back in 1923 and I can really say that I have never found any more difficult work than the work with pyrogen. In fact, I used to call it my little blue devil because it was there and wasn't there. I was impressed with the elusiveness of it, and the fact that it might be everywhere. It appears in all your flasks, all your water and in everything you work with. I am wary of the possibility of contaminating what I am working with, with a pyrogen. I have to wash all my glassware with freshly distilled water, make all my chemical reagents up with freshly distilled water, and I have to use special filters in order to eliminate the pyrogen.
Pyrogens exist in very small concentration and give such a tremendous reaction. I am so much impressed with all this work that is being done, but I wonder, has it been done that carefully? Are some of these pictures that you get mixtures, due partly to what you are giving but also due to contaminants?”
