TL;DR: In this study ambulation and birthing ball were found to be effective to improve maternal outcome and there was no harm to the baby.
Abstract: The study was conducted to assess the effect of ambulation and birthing ball on the maternal and newborn outcome from 01.08.2011 to 31.10.2011. This randomized control study was conducted on 60 primigravida mothers. Purposive sampling technique was used for the selection of samples followed by random allocation of 20 samples each to the three groups namely, ambulation, birthing ball and control group respectively using lottery method. Ambulation and birthing ball therapy were given to the respective samples between cervical dilatation of 1-3cm during first stage of labour, whereas the control group was not given any intervention. Here maternal outcome includes1st stage duration (Area1), 2nd stage duration (Area2), cervical dilatation rate (Area3), and type of delivery(Area4) and newborn outcome includes heart rate, respiratory rate, colour, reflex and muscle tone. Since the t calculated value in Area 1 (5.257), Area 2 (2.781), Area 3(5.438) is greater than t table value (2.042) and in Area 4, 75% of ambulation group underwent normal vaginal delivery, it shows that there is significant improvement in maternal outcome after the use of ambulation. The t calculated value in Area 1(7.223), Area 2 (5.556), Area 3(6.178) is greater than t table value (2.030) and in Area 4, 95% of birthing ball group underwent normal vaginal delivery. It shows that there is significant improvement in maternal outcome after the use of birthing ball therapy. Comparison of ambulation and birthing ball therapy on maternal outcome showed that, there is significant difference in second stage duration (t tab 2.031(df=36)

TL;DR: The using of birthing ball throughout the first stage of labor is associated with positive effect on labor progress and outcome and should be encouraged to use birth ball as one of the significant modalities to improve labor progress, manage pain, anxiety and attain more satisfactory birthing experience.
Abstract: Background: It is beyond argument that women who are about to give natural birth to their babiesneed some physical exercise such as standing, walking around, sitting, or kneeling in order to provide for the “gravity effect” that would help in speeding up the dilation of the cervix. The birth ball used to be utilized in various settings of birth and is highly considered as a powerful, secureand easy method of promoting the progress of labor and relieving pain. The current study aim sat studying the using of the birthing ball during the first stage of labor and its effect on the progress of labor and outcome among nulliparous women. The design: The quasi-experimental design was utilized. A group of 120 laboring women was included by purposive sampling technique; the study subjects randomly assigned into two equal group. Setting: The study was implemented in the maternity Unit located in El-Nabawy El Mohandes Hospital (economical part), Fayoum. Five tools have been employed ingathering the needed data; 1) structure interview schedule questionnaire, 2) Partograph, 3) Visual analog pain intensity scale, 4) State Trait Anxiety Inventory and 5) Satisfaction visual analogue scale. The Findings of the present results revealsa high significant statistical difference between the two groups concerning the improvement of the dilatation of the cervix and fetus head descent that end in decreases duration of the first and second labor stages in the study sample. Also the sample of the study expressed less pain and anxiety score. Conclusion: the using of birthing ball throughout the first stage of labor is associated with positive effect on labor progress and outcome. Recommendation: Encourage women to use birth ball during the first stage of labor as one of the significant modalities to improve labor progress, manage pain, anxiety and attain more satisfactory birthing experience.
TL;DR: The results revealed that the labouring women experienced the birthing ball as a useful labour tool, as shortening the labour process and as empowering them during labour.
Abstract: The article explores the experiences of South African multiparous labouring women on their use of the birthing ball during the first stage of labour. The authors used a qualitative research approach using unstructured audiotaped interviews as the data collection method and data were collected over a period of one calendar month. The sample for the study were women who were six hours to six weeks post-delivery, had at least one child already, used the birthing ball, were on no medication, and had delivered a live infant. The sample consisted of twelve purposively selected participants, two of whom were used for the pilot study. The data analysis method was Data Analysis Spiral. The authors made use of an independent coder to assist with coding the data and three major themes were identified. The results revealed that the labouring women experienced the birthing ball as a useful labour tool, as shortening the labour process and as empowering them during labour.
TL;DR: It was showed that BPE is effective as non-pharmacology methods on pain relieve of first stage of labor and other variables such as anxiety of birth mother need to be investigated.
Abstract: Background and Purpose : Labor pain is unpleasant and frightening experience for birth mother. In addition, labor pain cause exhaustion and childbirth trauma. Birthing ball, pelvic rocking, and endorphin (B.P.E) massage are emerging as non-pharmacology methods of pain management in labor. The aimed of this study was to investigate the effect of package of BPE on labour pain during the first stage of labor. Method: This study was quasi-experiment. Total numbers of samples were 23 mothers who were in the first stage of labor. Samples were selected by using quota sampling technique. Instrument of this study was numeric rating scale (NRS). Result: Data analysis by using paired sample t-test revealed that there were significantly different between before and after the intervention of BPE on labour pain during the first stage of labor in this study (p <0.01). Conclusion and recommendation : This study showed that BPE is effective as non-pharmacology methods on pain relieve of first stage of labor. Further study need to investigate other variables such as anxiety of birth mother. Key Words : labor pain, package of birth ball, pelvic rocking, and endorphin massage(BPE), labor process.
