Abstract: A bedside cabinet (20) having a generally U-shaped forward access area within which a portable commode (28) may be stored. The cabinet (20) includes an upper drawer cabinet section (52) an a pivoting top panel (38) under which is stored an adjustable shelf (34). The top panel (38) is pivoted to a vertical position, the adjustable shelf (34) is elevated and locked in a desired position and the top panel (38) is then lowered to its normal horizontal position. The portable commode (28) is designed to ft within the cabinet (20) for storage; and in addition, a walker (30) is designed to fit around and be stored on the cabinet (20).

Abstract: A 64-year-old man was found dead in an unusual prone positition on the floor close to the bed in his apartment. The upper part of the body was leaning against a bedside cabinet (approximately 40 cm in height) with the head, the left arm and the right hand lying on the top of the cabinet (Fig. 1). The neck was considerably hyperextended and rotated to the left, so that the right side of the neck was pressed firmly against the upper front edge of the cabinet. The man was not wedged in a confined narrow space, for example, a space between the bed and the cabinet. Only a duvet was spread over the lower part of his body, and there were no objects that could have fixed his body position. Police investigations revealed that the man was not known to abuse illegal substances, but to consume alcoholic beverages on a daily basis. He had no previous medical history and was last seen alive 5 days earlier.

Abstract: A bedside cabinet (10) for hospital wards runs on four casters (11) and has in addition to the table top (13) a height-adjustable bedside top (12) with a swivel adjustment (15). The plates for both tops have a core (18) of low cost carrier materials (chipboard or hard fibreboard), covered by a 0.8 mm thick layer of phenolic resin with melamine lining. A rim (14, 21-24) which overlaps this layer on the edges is made of two-component PU resin. ADVANTAGE - This makes the bedside cabinet fit for hot disinfection at over 100 deg C in a washing tunnel.
