TL;DR: The relationships within the mongooses (Herpestidae) have been recently reconsidered and two clades are shown, corresponding to the traditional Herpestinae and Mungotinae, but with Cynictis included in the former rather than the latter.
Abstract: The relationships within the mongooses (Herpestidae) have been recently reconsidered on the basis of molecular data. However, these studies failed to completely resolve the relationships within the subfamily Herpestinae. Moreover, the species of the genus Bdeogale have not been included in previous studies. Three genes were sequenced, Cytochrome b, ND2 and Transthyretin intron I, for 20 species of Herpestidae. The results show that the Herpestidae form two clades, corresponding to the traditional Herpestinae and Mungotinae, but with Cynictis included in the former rather than the latter. Within the Herpestinae, the genus Herpestes is not monophyletic. A newly proposed clade groups Bdeogale, Cynictis, Ichneumia and Rynchogale. Some morphological and karyological characters were mapped on the trees so as to characterize the newly defined molecular groups.
TL;DR: New records in Tanzania of the Vulnerable Jackson's mongoose Bdeogale jacksoni expand its distribution by over 900 km to the south as mentioned in this paper, confirming that the species is primarily nocturnal.
Abstract: New records in Tanzania of the Vulnerable Jackson's mongoose Bdeogale jacksoni expand its distribution by over 900 km to the south. During two independent camera-trap surveys over 3 years B. jacksoni, one of Africa's most cryptic small carnivores and previously thought to be endemic to Kenya, was recorded in forests of the Udzungwa Mountains. All records were highly localized within Matundu forest, at a maximum of 2.65 km apart. Most of the records (73%) were between 19.00 and 00.00, confirming that the species is primarily nocturnal. Conservation recommendations include further ecological research, genetic analyses, surveys in other Eastern Arc and ground-water dependent forests, and greater protection for Matundu.
TL;DR: A new sub-species of B.c. crassicauda is describedbed in this paper and the sub-specific name nigrescens proposed.
Abstract: The four-toed mongooses belong to the African genus Bdeogale Peters. The genotype, Bdeogale crassicauda, was descriptionbed by Peters in 1852 and currently contains four sub-species. They are distributed through central Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia (B.c. crassicauda Peters 1852); northern Mozambique and southern Tanzania (B.c. puisa Peters 1852); Zanzibar Island (B.c. tenuis Thomas & Wroughton 1908); and northern coastal Tanzania and Kenya (B.c. omnivora Heller 1913), according to Coetzee (1967). In addition, most recent authorities (Walker, 1964; Coetzee, 1967) regard Galeriscus Thomas as a sub-genus of Bdeogale, containing the species B. nigripes Pucheran (1855) and B. jacksoni Thomas (1894). A new sub-species of B. crassicauda is descriptionbed in this paper and the sub-specific name nigrescens proposed.
TL;DR: A bird watching excursion to the Amani Nature Reserve, Tanzania, in July 2003, five ornithologists encountered a mongoose of the Bdeogale-group, most likely the Sokoke dog mongoOSE Bdeogsale omnivora Heller, 1913, a species first observed from this area in 1939, but not reported since then.
Abstract: During a bird watching excursion to the Amani Nature Reserve (East Usambara Mountains), Tanzania, in July 2003, five ornithologists encountered a mongoose of the Bdeogale-group. The mongoose was most likely the Sokoke dog mongoose Bdeogale omnivora Heller, 1913, a species first observed from this area in 1939, but not reported since then.
TL;DR: The distribution and relative abundance of nine other carnivores including the White-tailed Mongoose, Ichneumia a.
Abstract: The present study provides information on the ecology and biology of the White-tailed Mongoose, Ichneumia a. albicauda. and the Bushy-tailed Mongoose, Bdeogale crassocaida, in Yemen, based on field and captivity observation In addition, the distribution and relative abundance of nine other carnivores are included.
