Abstract: A force feedback control system for a backhoe includes a single grip articulated control arm having members and joints therebetween analogous to the members and joints of an articulated backhoe arm connecting an excavation bucket to a backhoe frame. A bilateral closed loop control circuit compares slave position signals from output joint position sensors associated with the backhoe arm joints with corresponding master position signals from input joint sensors associated with the control arm joints and provides command signals to actuators associated with the backhoe joints to move them so that differences in corresponding master and slave position signals are minimized. Backhoe joint load sensors provide load signals indicating resistance to movement of the associated backhoe joints, and the control circuit generates force feedback signals to drive feedback motors associated with the control arm joints to apply toruqes thereto to reflect the resistance to movement of the associated backhoe joints.
TL;DR: In this paper, a robust sliding controller that implements impedance control for a backhoe excavator is proposed to provide good tracking performance with attenuated vibration at bucket-soil contact points.
TL;DR: The backhoe magnets on the Viking Lander (VL) 2 were successfully cleaned, followed by a test involving successive insertions of the cleaned backhoe into the surface.
Abstract: The backhoe magnets on Viking Lander (VL) 2 were successfully cleaned, followed by a test involving successive insertions of the cleaned backhoe into the surface. Rapid saturation of the magnets confirmed evidence from primary mission results that the magnetic mineral in the Martian surface is widely distributed, most probably in the form of composite particles of magnetic and nonmagnetic minerals. An image of the VL 2 backhoe taken via the X4 magnifying mirror demonstrates the fine-grained nature of the attracted magnetic material. The presence of maghemite and its occurrence as a pigment in, or a thin coating on, all mineral particles or as discrete, finely divided and widely distributed crystallites, are consistent with data from the inorganic analysis experiments and with laboratory simulations of results of the biology experiments on Mars.
TL;DR: A backhoe includes a computer capable of automatically controlling the depth or lowermost point of the backhoe bucket as discussed by the authors, which can provide level operation of a backhoe, will have preset common depths and programmable depths, and further include an automatic empty and return cycle.
Abstract: A backhoe includes a computer capable of automatically controlling the depth or lowermost point of the backhoe bucket. The computer is programmable to provide level operation of the backhoe, will have preset common depths and programmable depths, and further include an automatic empty and return cycle, and to maintain a given level or slope of a desired ditch. Special resistors are positioned at all of the pivot points of the backhoe to act as sensors for relaying information to the computer. The output of the computer controls hydraulic valves which, in turn, operate the outriggers, boom, crowd and bucket of the backhoe assembly.
TL;DR: Leveling experiment of gravel mound was carried out successfully on land with an experimental land model of underwater backhoe, and Haptic information is introduced as the aid to control construction machines substituting for visual information.
