TL;DR: In this article, the surface ratio of flake-like graphite and base reformation was used to enhance the vibration-absorbing capability of a flake like graphite cast iron.
Abstract: PURPOSE: To enhance the vibration-absorbing capability of a flakelike graphite cast iron through limited surface ratio of flakelike graphite and base reformation by a method wherein the flakelike graphite cast iron in which C, Si and carbon equivalent is specified is treated with austempering. CONSTITUTION: Flakelike graphite cast iron containing C: 3.0W3.7wt%, Si: 1.3W 2.3%, carbon equivalent (C+1/3 Si): 4.3% or less is treated with austempering at about 220W360°C. This provides an improved bainite structure having flakelike graphite in 7W15% surface ratio and the base including the remaining austenite in 10W40% surface ratio. This treatment provides a flakelike graphite cast iron having an enhanced damping properties without increasing the amount of carbon. Also, reduced amount of carbon increases its strength. Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the connecting rods which withstand high load by subjecting cast iron chips to grinding and decarbonization and compression-molding this then subjecting this to sintering or/and heat-forging. CONSTITUTION: The chips produced by turning or grinding of cast iron moldings are pulverized and are moved of fine particle powder containing free graphite particles and free carbon by a centrifugal separator (for example, cyclone), whereby the decarbonized cast iron powder of less carbon contents is obtained. This is compression-molded by dies and powder-molding press to the molding resembling to the product. This is annealed or/and heat-forged in a reducing atmosphere such as AX gas to be made into the steel structure containing spheroidized graphite or carbide. After cooling, this is subjected to finishing. This yields the connecting rods having the strength to withstand high load and of good dimensional accuracy and weight balance accuracy. It is also possible to add heat treatment (for example, austempering) to the above-mentioned process. COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio
