Abstract: A high explosive armor piercing shell having a shell body containing an explosive charge A sabot is formed at the front end of the body and a hard core projects from the front end of the body with which the sabot cooperates The hard core is in the shape of a bolt having an end portion secured to the sabot The front end of the body is in the form of a plate integral with the shell body The hard core is located in a ballistic cap secured to the front end of the body The hard core has a peripheral groove cut into its rear portion, and the front end of the body has a beaded edge which engages the groove
TL;DR: In this article, an armour-piercing projectile comprises a core of sintered metal or alloy such as tungsten carbide and an envelope of light-weight material such as aluminium alloy.
Abstract: 1,092,678. Armour - piercing projectiles. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. Oct. 1, 1965 [Oct. 8, 1964], No. 41832/65. Heading F3A. An armour-piercing projectile comprises a core 1 of sintered metal or alloy such as tungsten carbide and an envelope of light-weight material such as aluminium alloy. The envelope is made in two parts 2, 3 which may be screwed together. In the forward end of the core is a conical recess 4 having an edge 5 with a diameter not greater than half the maximum diameter of the core. The core may be glued to the envelope with an ethoxyline resin and its base 13 may be concave. The cone wall may be perpendicular to the coned peripheral wall 15 of the nose of the core. An incendiary charge may be placed within the nose of the projectile and a tracer or incendiary charge in the base. The projectile has a driving band 8 of copper, iron or soft steel. Particular values of the angles A and B defining the coned surfaces and of the diameters d and D, are given for a projectile of 20 mm. calibre.
TL;DR: In this article, a conversion device was used to change a conventional artillery explosive shell into an armor piercing shell destined to function against concrete structures, which increased the penetrating power of the shell.
Abstract: of EP0943887The shell has additional elements increasing penetrating power. The conversion device is intended to change a conventional artillery explosive shell into an armor piercing shell destined to function against concrete structures. The shell includes a front hole (5) which is intended to receive a fuse, and a rear connection which is intended to receive a device reducing aerodynamic drag. It includes a firing box (14) fastened to the shell by the rear connection. This includes a safety and arming device for the charge passing through the wall of the base device. A nose cone (11) is attached to the device by the front hole (5) in the shell.
