Abstract: Jamil Hanifi's review of David Edwards's Before Taliban (AA 106[1]:185-187) fails to explain the important contribution of this work to our knowledge of Afghanistan during a critical period of its history Because I have already reviewed the book in a forthcoming issue of Iranian Studies, this is not the place to elaborate on my own estimation of Edwards's work Here, I merely want to object to Hanifi's tone and insinuation
