TL;DR: A combination of DNA barcode sequence data and morphology is used to resolve taxonomic differences, determine the actual geographic range of these taxa, and describe three new species.
Abstract: Several species of Ancylis related to A. unguicella (Linnaeus) and A. geminana (Donovan) have been presumed by previous authors to be Holarctic. However, difficulty in identifying genitalic characters to define and separate these taxa has brought into question their true distribution and led to inconsistencies in their taxonomic treatment in Europe and North America. Here we use a combination of DNA barcode sequence data and morphology to resolve these taxonomic differences, determine the actual geographic range of these taxa, and describe three new species. In the A. unguicella group, only A. unguicella and A. uncella (Denis & Schiffermuller) are Holarctic in distribution. In the A. geminana group, none of the taxa are Holarctic in their distribution. Three species are described as new: A. christiandiana Huemer and Wiesmair, sp.n. (Austria, Germany); A. oregonensis Gilligan and Huemer, sp.n. (USA: Oregon); and A. saliana Gilligan and Huemer, sp.n. (USA: Florida). In addition, Ancylis carbonana Heinrich, syn.n., is synonymized with A. uncella; A. cuspidana (Treitschke), syn.rev., is synonymized with A. diminutana (Haworth); and A. diminuatana Kearfott, stat.rev., and A. subarcuana (Douglas), stat.rev., are raised from synonymy.
TL;DR: Histological studies on the female pheromoneproducing glands revealed significant development of glandular epithelium between the eighth and ninth abdominal segments with all species except strawberry leaf roller moths.
Abstract: Laboratory and field tests were conducted with female sex pheromone extracts in 11 species of tortricids. These included Grapholitha molesta (Busck), Hedia nubiferana Haworth, Carpocapsa pomonella (L.), Paralobcsia viteana (Clemens), Ancylis comptana fragariae (Walsh & Riley), of the subfamily Olethreutinae, and Argyrotaenia velutinana (Walker) A. quadrifaciana Fernald, Archips argyrospilus (Walker), A. mortuanus Kearfott, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), and Pandcmis limitata (Robinson) of the Tortricinae. A slight male response to pheromone extracts of females in other species suggested similar but not identical pheromone structures. Field tests showed male specificity in all species with the exception of some attractancy of Archips mortuanus males to Argyrotaenia velutinana female extracts. Negative male stimulation was recorded in the field and laboratory with strawberry leaf roller, Ancylis c. fragariae female extract. Histological studies on the female pheromoneproducing glands revealed significant development of glandular epithelium between the eighth and ninth abdominal segments with all species except strawberry leaf roller moths.
TL;DR: Three species are described as new: Choristoneura africana, Lu- maria afrotropica, Protancylis bisecta.
Abstract: Eight genera known to date from Palaearctic are found in the Afrotropical re- gion., viz., Choristoneura HUBNER, (1825), Clepsis GUENEE, 1845, Lumaria DIAKONOFF, 1976, Ancylis HUBNER (1825), Dasodis DIAKONOFF, 1982, Protancylis DIAKONOFF, 1983, Strepsicrates MEYRICK, 1888, Fulcrifera DANILEVSKY & KUZNETZOV, 1968. Three species are described as new: Choristoneura africana, Lu- maria afrotropica, Protancylis bisecta. The occurrence of 20 genera is confirmed, 13 gen- era previously mentioned from Afrotropical region should be excluded.
