Abstract: Two new riodinid genera in the subtribe Nymphidiina (tribe Nymphidiini) are described from the lowlands of the Amazon basin. Livendula Hall, n. gen., is described with huebneri Butler as its type species, and the following eleven species are transferred to Livendula (n. combs.) from Adelotypa Warren: amasis Hewitson, aminias Hewitson, aristus Stoll, balista Hewitson, epixanthe Stichel, huebneri Butler, jasonhalli Brevignon & Gallard, leucocyana Geyer, leucophaea Hubner, pauxilla Stichel, and violacea Butler. Minotauros Hall, n. gen., is described with lampros Bates as its type species, and the following two species are transferred to Minotauros (n. combs.) from Adelotypa: lampros Bates, and charessa Stichel.
TL;DR: The territorial behavior of three species of Colombian butterflies Laothus gibberosa, Adelotypa densemaculata (Hewitson) and Pseudotinea volcanicus Callaghan & Salazar is briefly analyzed using populations observed in Western Caldas district, Colombia.
Abstract: In this paper the territorial behavior of three species of Colombian butterflies Laothus gibberosa (Hewitson), Adelotypa densemaculata (Hewitson) and Pseudotinea volcanicus Callaghan & Salazar is briefly analyzed using populations observed in Western Caldas district, Colombia.
TL;DR: Seven new species of Riodinidae from Colombia are described based on material deposited in the authors’ collections and by comparative analysis of literature and revision of other collections in Colombia.
Abstract: In the present study, seven new species of Riodinidae from Colombia are described based on material deposited in the authors’ collections and by comparative analysis of literature and revision of other collections in Colombia: Colaciticus seitzi n. sp., Lucillella aphrodita n. sp., Euselasia tenebrosa n. sp., Machaya aenigmatica n. sp., Esthemopsis chocoana n. sp., Adelotypa andresi n. sp., and Symmachia titiana occidentalis n. ssp. New records of thirteen species belonging to the genera Esthemopsis, Themone, Napaea, Cyrenia, Menander, Euselasia, Symmachia, Ithomeis, Nahida, Pachytone and Panaropsis, are also presented and comments on the taxonomic status of each species are provided.
TL;DR: The new genus Machaya is described, in addition to five new species in the genera AnterosHubner, Euselasia Hubner, [1819], Menander Hemming, 1939, Symmachia Hubner], and Machaya n.
Abstract: The new genus Machaya is described, in addition to five new species in the genera Anteros Hubner, [1819], Euselasia Hubner, [1819], Menander Hemming, 1939, Symmachia Hubner, [1819], and Machaya n. gen. All of these taxa were discovered in cloud forest habitats in eastern Ecuador.
TL;DR: This study furthers the understanding of character definition and homology of the male valva and transtilla within the Nymphidiini, and provides a baseline for future work on riodinid systematics.
Abstract: Early stage and adult characters (morphology and behavior) indicated that the riodinid Apodemia paucipuncta had been erroneously placed in the genus Apodemia (Incertae Sedis, previously in tribe Emesini). To infer the systematic position of paucipuncta, we performed a cladistic analysis using 72 male morphology characters for 36 species placed in six genera. Our results show that (1) Apodemia paucipuncta is the sister species of Adelotypa eudocia and together they constitute a new genus in the tribe Nymphidiini, Hallonympha, new genus; (2) species of Adelotypa closely related to Catocyclotis and Nymphidium also constitute a new genus, Harveyope, new genus; and (3) sampled species of the Nymphidiini genera Adelotypa and Calospila do not form monophyletic groups, indicating that these genera are in need of revision. This study furthers our understanding of character definition and homology of the male valva and transtilla within the Nymphidiini, and provides a baseline for future work on riodinid systematics.
