TL;DR: The 5S method as discussed by the authors is a tool for continuous improving lean management processes, whose task is to create a highly efficient, clean, and ergonomic working environment, and it is presented as a collection of 5 simple guidelines.
Abstract: The chapter presents the 5S method as a tool for
continuous improving lean management processes, whose task is
to create a highly efficient, clean, and ergonomic working environment.
The method is presented as a collection of 5 simple
rules, and at the same time it is a tool that allows you to control
the workplace visually. The history of the 5S tool originates from
Japanese philosophy, namely the five basic elements of the system:
Seiri (selection), Seiton (systematization), Seiso (cleaning),
Seiketsu (standardization) and Shitsuke (self-discipline)
TL;DR: A dynamic methodology for implementing the 5S methodology with a focus on JIT, Kanban, and Kaizen, for the production area in organizations, to achieve a pleasant working environment and sustainable improvements over time is proposed.
Abstract: This paper proposes a dynamic methodology for implementing the 5S methodology (Seiri: Sort), (Seiton: Set in order) (Seiso: Shine), (Seiketsu: Standardize) (Shitsuke: Sustain) with a focus on JIT, Kanban, and Kaizen, for the production area in organizations. The implementation of 5S helps companies become efficient and effective in areas such as waste reduction, cost overruns, rework, workplace accidents, while maintaining a neat, clean, and standardized area. This ensures that organizations have a rational use of resources and full control of production by making use of JIT and Kanban in order to direct development toward continual improvement. This process is achieved by the use of Pareto diagram, cause and effect diagram and process flow diagram, red cards, color cards, identification matrix, training, screening, amongst others in order to achieve a pleasant working environment and sustainable improvements over time.
TL;DR: The 5S (Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiktesu, Shitsuke) method as discussed by the authors is a set of straight forward steps towards continuous improvement, which helps to eliminate waste, provide safe environment via monitoring the organize environment and use visual data for obtain the best results with effectiveness.
Abstract: This paper explains the 5S (Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiktesu, Shitsuke) method and its techniques which is use to increase the productivity and efficiency of an organization. 5S is the arrangement of five Japanese words; Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order), Seiso (Shine), Seiktesu (Standardize), Shitsuke (Sustain). This scheme helps to eliminate the waste, provide safe environment via monitoring the organize environment and use visual data for obtain the best results with effectiveness. It also works on the principal of cubic space within the organization. Consequently, 5S is a set of straight forward steps towards continuous improvement. With this in mind, the present work has attempted to travel around various facets of 5S by analyzing the previous studies about its implementation and see how it can be fitted with in the industries to get the optimal results.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors deal with the implementation of 5S in a small-scale industry and analyze the effectiveness in terms of search time, safety, productivity, cost, etc.
Abstract: 5S is a systematic technique used by organizations that comes from five Japanese words: Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (standardize), and Shitsuke (sustain) (Patel and Thakkar in J Eng Res Appl 4(3):774–779, [1]). The common problem that arises in an organization is defects in material, quality of the human resource, downtime in production, improper safety for the workers, working condition, etc. This paper deals with the implementation of 5S in a small-scale industry and to analyze the effectiveness in terms of search time, safety, productivity, cost, etc. The implementation of 5S can also result in considerable improvements in efficiency, maintenance, quality, better, more committed employees, and a stepwise reduction in unnecessary items. The 5S also intend to build a stronger work culture within management and workers and keeps them moving towards to have continual improvement.
TL;DR: 5S as discussed by the authors is a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke as shown in Fig. 4.1.
Abstract: 5S is the name of a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke as shown in Fig. 4.1. Transliterated into Roman Script, they all start with the letter “S”. 5S is used to stabilize, maintain, and improve the safest, best working environment thus supporting sustainable QCDplus alpha. 5S is a systematic and structured workplace optimization, originally be developed and used by Toyota. The objective is the identification and elimination of waste. In simple terms, the 5S methodology helps a workplace remove items that are no longer needed (sort), organize the items to optimize efficiency and flow (straighten), clean the area in order to more easily identify problems (shine), implement color coding and labels to stay consistent with other areas (standardize) and develop behaviors that keep the workplace organized over the long term (sustain). 5S is a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words as follows:
