Ubiquity Press is a fully open-access academic publisher founded in London in 2008 by Brian Hole, originally growing out of open-access publishing work at University College London. It publishes roughly 40 peer-reviewed journals plus open-access books, with particular strength in open science - data papers, software papers, and research infrastructure - as well as health sciences and the humanities and social sciences. Many of its journals are owned by learned societies, research consortia, or universities and published on their behalf. Since October 2022 Ubiquity Press has been part of the De Gruyter group (now De Gruyter Brill, following the 2024 De Gruyter-Brill merger), while continuing to operate under its own brand.

Everything Ubiquity publishes is Gold open access under a CC BY licence - there are no subscription or hybrid journals. APCs are among the lowest of any established OA publisher, and several titles charge nothing at all. A distinctive feature: most Ubiquity journals are owned by societies, associations, or research organisations (CODATA, UKSG, the Belgian Association for Psychological Science, the World Heart Federation) that use Ubiquity as their publishing platform and services partner.

Every Ubiquity Press article is Gold OA under CC BY, with authors retaining copyright. APCs are set per journal and are low by industry standards. Figures below are from journal price pages and DOAJ (2026); always check the journal's own fees page before submitting.

Waivers: authors without funds can request a discount or full waiver in the cover letter at submission; a share of every APC (around 12% at some titles) goes into a waiver fund, and editorial decisions are made independently of ability to pay. Institutional discounts: UK institutions get roughly 10% off via Jisc agreements. Ubiquity's participation in large transformative agreements is limited - since all titles are already fully OA, there is nothing to "transform".

• Default model: single-anonymized peer review across most titles; some journals operate open or community review variants.
• Data and software papers are reviewed for reusability: JORS reviewers check that the software can actually be built, deployed, and understood, and that metadata is correct.
• Selectivity varies: Data Science Journal reported a ~20% acceptance rate in 2024; JORS around 33% in 2025.
• Turnaround varies widely - smaller editorially-run titles can take several months from submission to publication, so check each journal's published statistics.

2. Read the author guidelines. Each journal publishes its own submission requirements, article types, and fee schedule.
3. Prepare your manuscript. Ubiquity journals use author-year referencing; SciSpace hosts formatted templates for Ubiquity titles.
4. Submit via the journal's site. Ubiquity runs its own online submission and peer-review platform, accessed from each journal's homepage - there is no central Editorial Manager or ScholarOne instance.
5. Request a waiver if needed in the cover letter, and track review from your author dashboard.

Ubiquity Press is a member of COPE, OASPA, and STM, and all journals follow COPE guidelines on misconduct, corrections, and retractions. Its 2018 shareholder charter commits the company to permanent open access: all articles and books are published under Creative Commons licences, and content is preserved in long-term digital archives. Authors retain copyright on everything they publish.
