The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) is the main US professional society for metallurgy, minerals processing and materials science and engineering. It publishes seven peer-reviewed journals, and while Springer handles production, hosting and subscriptions, the journals remain society-owned: TMS appoints the editors, sets scope, and runs the technical committees that feed the special topical issues.

TMS began in 1957 as The Metallurgical Society, one of three constituent societies formed inside the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), and took its present name in 1989 to reflect a broader minerals-to-materials scope. It is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with roughly 13,000 members in more than 70 countries. This guide covers the portfolio, how to choose between the titles, open access and APCs, peer review, and the submission workflow.

The portfolio is small enough that journal choice is usually obvious once you know whether your paper is about physical metallurgy, process metallurgy, electronic materials, sustainability, or computational materials engineering.

• JOM - first issued in 1949 and the society's member journal. It spans extraction, characterisation, processing, fabrication, design, applications, supply chain, and life-cycle and sustainability practice, and is well known for themed topical collections organised by TMS technical committees.
• Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and B - archival journals co-published with ASM International. A covers physical metallurgy and materials science; B covers process metallurgy and materials processing science. Both trace their lineage to the AIME Transactions.
• Journal of Electronic Materials - monthly, covering electronic, magnetic and optical materials.
• Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy - original metallurgical process research aimed at cutting energy use and improving recovery, reuse and recycling.
• Integrating Materials and Manufacturing Innovation - supports Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME); fully open access.
• Shape Memory and Superelasticity - shape-memory alloys and superelastic technologies, published jointly with ASM International.

TMS also publishes a large conference-proceedings programme, most visibly the volumes tied to the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition and the Light Metals series.

Every TMS journal except IMMI is hybrid: you can publish free of charge under the subscription model, or pay an APC to make your article immediately open access under CC BY. The open-access decision is offered after acceptance, and it never affects the editorial decision.

List prices are revised annually and are quoted before tax, so confirm the figure on the journal's "Open access fees and funding" page before you submit. Two routes reduce or remove the fee: your institution may hold a Springer Nature transformative agreement that covers the APC in full, and authors in Research4Life-eligible countries may qualify for a waiver or discount. Green open access is also permitted - the accepted manuscript can be self-archived subject to the journal's embargo.

TMS journals use single-anonymised peer review: reviewers see author identities, authors do not see reviewer identities. Editors are practising researchers appointed by the society, and much of the reviewer pool comes from TMS technical divisions covering extraction and processing, functional materials, light metals, materials processing and manufacturing, and structural materials. First decisions typically arrive within one to three months, though special-issue timelines are set by the guest editors.

1. Pick the journal. Use the scope statements above, and check recent issues for close comparators to your paper.
2. Read the submission guidelines. Each title has its own instructions for authors on Springer Nature Link, including figure, unit and nomenclature conventions.
3. Prepare the manuscript. TMS journals use a numbered citation style; the Springer LaTeX and Word templates for each journal are available on SciSpace.
4. Check for a relevant special issue. JOM and the Transactions run frequent topical collections tied to TMS symposia - submitting into one can be a better fit than the general queue.
5. Submit via Editorial Manager. All TMS journals use Editorial Manager, reached from the journal's "Submit manuscript" link.
6. Choose your publishing route after acceptance. Subscription publishing is free; open access carries the APC above unless an agreement or waiver applies.

TMS journals follow COPE guidance on authorship, plagiarism, competing interests, corrections and retractions, and inherit Springer Nature's editorial-policy framework covering research data, image integrity and disclosure of generative-AI use. Because much TMS research is funded by industry or national laboratories, funding sources and conflicts of interest must be declared explicitly at submission.
