Thieme Group is one of Europe's oldest independent science publishers - founded in Leipzig in 1886 by Georg Thieme and family-owned ever since, with headquarters in Stuttgart since 1946 and a North American arm, Thieme Medical Publishers, in New York. The portfolio is focused rather than sprawling: around 150 peer-reviewed journals concentrated in clinical medicine, surgical specialties, chemistry, and nursing. In synthetic organic chemistry, Thieme's Synthesis and Synlett are among the leading venues in the field, and its medical list includes long-running titles such as Endoscopy, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift - the journal that published Roentgen's X-ray photograph in 1896.

This guide covers what you need to submit successfully: how to pick the right Thieme journal, the open-access routes and APCs, peer review, submission systems, and publication ethics.

• Medical journals - the core of the list: surgery and neurosurgery, gastroenterology and endoscopy, hematology, pediatrics, perinatology, radiology, otolaryngology, and more. Many are official society journals in German- and English-language markets.
• Thieme Chemistry - Synthesis, Synlett, Synfacts, SynOpen, and Organic Materials, plus major reference works such as Science of Synthesis.
• Nursing and allied health - German-language professional journals and education titles.
• Books and references - a large medical book and atlas program (including the well-known anatomy atlases), which sits alongside but separate from the journal portfolio.

Thieme runs its open-access program under the Thieme Open banner. Three routes:

• Gold OA (fully-OA journals) - 30+ fully open-access titles, including Endoscopy International Open, TH Open, SynOpen, and Organic Materials. Articles are published under CC BY or CC BY-NC licenses.
• Hybrid OA - most Thieme subscription journals let authors pay an APC to make an individual article open access; Thieme publishes a double-dipping policy for these titles.
• Green OA (self-archiving) - permitted with a per-title embargo; check the journal's self-archiving terms or Sherpa Romeo.

Waivers are available for eligible authors, and Thieme has read-and-publish agreements with library consortia - including Jisc in the UK - recorded in the ESAC agreement registry. • Default model: single-anonymized peer review across the portfolio.
• Chemistry titles: Synthesis and Synlett are known for efficient editorial handling; Synlett has also experimented with crowd-based review approaches.
• Turnaround: varies by title - communications-focused journals move faster than clinical review titles. Check each journal's page for current times.

1. Pick the journal. Match your manuscript's scope against the journal's aims on thieme.com or Thieme Connect.
2. Read the Instructions for Authors. Each Thieme journal has title-specific guidelines covering abstract format, reference style, and figure specs.
3. Format your manuscript. Medical titles generally use Vancouver-style numbered references; Thieme Chemistry titles follow chemistry conventions (ACS-style). SciSpace templates handle both.
4. Submit online. Thieme Chemistry titles (Synthesis, Synlett) use ScholarOne Manuscripts (Manuscript Central); many medical titles use Editorial Manager - the journal page tells you which system applies.
5. After acceptance, choose your OA option (if any) and sign the license or copyright form.
