Taylor & Francis is one of the world's oldest academic publishers still operating under its founding name. Richard Taylor launched the Philosophical Magazine in 1798; chemist William Francis joined the firm in 1852, and the modern group grew through acquisitions including Routledge (1998), CRC Press, Dove Medical Press (2017), and F1000 Research (2020). Since 2004 it has been the academic publishing division of Informa plc, listed on the London Stock Exchange. Today the group publishes 2,700+ peer-reviewed journals - with an especially deep humanities and social sciences list through Routledge - plus books, open research platforms, and reference works.

What Taylor & Francis actually publishes
2,700+ peer-reviewed journals organized under five main brands:
- Taylor & Francis - the historic science, technology, medicine and social science core, including titles published on behalf of learned societies (e.g., the American Statistical Association's journals).
- Routledge - the world's leading humanities and social sciences journal and book imprint, acquired in 1998; strong in education, politics, sociology, media, sport, and area studies.
- CRC Press - engineering, mathematics, and technical publishing, best known for books and handbooks alongside related journals.
- Cogent - a family of broad-scope, fully open access journals spanning all major subject areas.
- Dove Medical Press & F1000 - fully-OA biomedical journals (Dove, acquired 2017) and the F1000Research open research platform (acquired 2020), which also powers partner platforms for funders and institutions.
Open access at Taylor & Francis
Four routes:
- Gold OA (fully-OA journals) - 350+ titles, including the Cogent Series, Dove Medical Press journals, and F1000Research. Licenses are CC BY, CC BY-NC, or CC BY-NC-ND depending on the journal.
- Hybrid OA (Open Select) - most T&F and Routledge subscription journals offer a per-article OA option.
- Green OA (self-archiving) - accepted manuscripts may be self-archived with a per-title embargo, typically 12-18 months for humanities and social sciences titles.
- Read & Publish (transformative) agreements - institutional deals covering OA fees for affiliated corresponding authors, in place with consortia and libraries across the UK, US, Europe, Australia, and beyond. Check the ESAC registry or your library. Note that cOAlition S ended the Transformative Journal framework at the end of 2024; T&F continues converting journals to full OA, including through its Collective Pathway to Open Publishing pilot.
APCs - what to expect
Taylor & Francis does not publish a single portfolio-wide APC; prices are set per journal and reviewed at least annually. Broad guidance (USD, before tax):

Always confirm the current fee with the Taylor & Francis Open Access Cost Finder before submission. Full waivers apply for authors in a set of lowest-income countries, and 50% discounts for a longer list of eligible countries, aligned with Research4Life/EIFL tiers.
Peer review process
- Default model: single-anonymized peer review on most T&F science and technology titles.
- Double-anonymized: common across Routledge humanities and social sciences journals.
- Open post-publication review: the F1000Research model - articles publish after editorial checks, then referee reports appear openly alongside the paper.
- Turnaround: varies widely by field and title; check the journal's homepage for median times. HSS titles often take 2-4 months to first decision; Dove and Cogent titles are typically faster.
How to submit
- Pick the journal. Use the Taylor & Francis Journal Suggester to match your abstract to candidate titles.
- Read the Instructions for Authors. Every T&F journal has title-specific requirements; most accept format-free initial submission.
- Prepare your manuscript. Reference style varies by title - APA, Harvard author-date, or Vancouver-style numeric - so use the journal-specific template on SciSpace.
- Submit via the journal's system. Most titles use ScholarOne Manuscripts; a growing share now uses the Taylor & Francis Submission Portal, and F1000Research has its own platform. The journal page tells you which.
- Track and transfer. The Submission Portal supports article transfer between T&F journals if your paper is better suited elsewhere.
Ethics and integrity
Taylor & Francis is a member of COPE, OASPA, and STM. Retractions and corrections follow COPE guidelines, and the publisher maintains a dedicated research integrity team plus published policies on authorship, AI use, and image manipulation. Data-sharing policies are tiered per journal, with open data mandatory on F1000Research.
