Publication Guide
The Society for Endocrinology is the UK's learned society for endocrinology - the study of hormones and metabolism. Founded in 1946 and headquartered in Bristol, the Society traces its publishing heritage to the Journal of Endocrinology, launched in 1939, seven years before the Society itself was formally constituted. Today its journals are published by Bioscientifica, a commercial subsidiary wholly owned by the Society, so publishing surpluses flow back into endocrine research, training, and public engagement rather than to shareholders.
The portfolio is small and focused: six society journals covering basic, translational, and clinical endocrinology, from molecular mechanisms to hormone-dependent cancers and clinical case reports. The Society is also affiliated with Clinical Endocrinology, published with Wiley. What the Society for Endocrinology publishes
Six peer-reviewed journals through Bioscientifica:
- Journal of Endocrinology - original research, reviews, and science guidelines across endocrine physiology; 2025 Journal Impact Factor around 5.7.
- Journal of Molecular Endocrinology - molecular and cellular mechanisms in endocrinology.

The Society is additionally affiliated with Clinical Endocrinology (Wiley) and produces the quarterly member magazine The Endocrinologist.
Open access & APCs
Three routes to open access:
- Gold OA (fully-OA journals) - Endocrine Connections, Endocrine Oncology, and EDM Case Reports. Default licence CC BY.
- Hybrid OA - Journal of Endocrinology, Journal of Molecular Endocrinology, and Endocrine-Related Cancer are subscription titles with a per-article OA option.
- Green OA (self-archiving) - accepted-manuscript archiving is permitted; check the per-journal policy for embargo details.

Prices are revised periodically - always check the journal's publication-charges page before submission. Bioscientifica has signed Read & Publish (transitional) agreements - including a Jisc agreement covering many UK institutions - under which corresponding authors at participating institutions publish OA in the hybrid titles at no direct cost. Some institutional deals also discount the Gold OA APCs; ask your library. Waiver requests for authors without funding are considered case by case.
Peer review
- Model: single-anonymized peer review is the default across the portfolio.
- Editors: academic editors drawn from the international endocrine community; Journal of Endocrinology is also endorsed by the Endocrine Society of Australia.
- Turnaround: first decisions typically arrive within 4-8 weeks, though this varies by journal and season.
- Reviewer incentives: EDM Case Reports offers reviewers who complete four reviews in a year a 40% APC discount.
How to submit
- Pick the journal. Use the decision table above, and check recent tables of contents to confirm scope fit.
- Read the author guidelines. Each journal's Bioscientifica site carries title-specific instructions.
- Prepare your manuscript. Vancouver-style referencing is standard; SciSpace templates for Society for Endocrinology journals handle formatting and citations automatically.
- Submit via ScholarOne Manuscripts. Each journal has its own ScholarOne portal, linked from the journal website; submitting authors must connect their ORCID iD.
- Flag member status and institutional deals. Enter your SfE/ESE member number at submission to claim APC discounts, and check whether your institution has a Bioscientifica Read & Publish agreement.
Ethics and integrity
The Society for Endocrinology and Bioscientifica are members of COPE and OASPA, and journal policies follow COPE guidance on authorship, corrections, and retractions. Case reports require documented patient consent. Data-availability statements are encouraged across the portfolio, and image- and data-integrity screening applies at acceptance.
