Karolinska Institutet Press is the publishing imprint of Karolinska Institutet (KI), Sweden's medical university in Solna, Stockholm, founded in 1810. It is not a commercial journal publisher: it issues no journal portfolio of its own, and no APC price list. Its output is monographic - doctoral theses, dissertation kappa volumes, and occasional academic books and reports produced by KI departments - with the Karolinska Institutet University Library (KIB) providing the surrounding publishing infrastructure.

If you arrived here looking for a journal to submit a research article to, KI Press is almost certainly not it. KI researchers publish their articles in external journals (Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, BMJ, Nature Portfolio and others) and then deposit the accepted manuscript in KI Open Archive, the university's institutional repository. This guide explains what KI Press does publish, how the thesis route works, and how KI's open-access infrastructure fits together.

• Doctoral theses - the dominant output. KI awards several hundred doctorates a year across medicine and the biomedical and health sciences, and each defended thesis is published with an ISBN and archived openly.
• Academic monographs and edited volumes - occasional, typically medical-history, public-health or education titles connected to KI research groups.
• Reports and institutional publications - departmental and centre reports, teaching material and commissioned reviews.
• No journals. KI-affiliated journals that carry the Karolinska name in their editorial history are produced by external publishers, not by KI Press. Treat any claim that KI Press "publishes journals" with caution.

Subject coverage follows KI itself: medicine, biomedicine, public and global health, nursing and allied health, health-services research and medical education.

Karolinska Institutet is an open-access-first institution, and the practical machinery sits with the library rather than with the press.

• KI Open Archive is the institutional repository. It holds dissertations, theses, accepted manuscripts and openly published articles, and it is where KI-affiliated authors self-archive (green OA).
• Gold OA for journal articles is handled through external publishers. KIB's APC Checker lets you look up a journal title and see whether its publishing fee is already covered.
• Bibsam Consortium - Sweden's national negotiating consortium, run by the National Library of Sweden (Kungliga biblioteket), covers read-and-publish agreements for roughly 97 participating Swedish organisations, KI among them. Bibsam has signalled a move away from hybrid-journal agreements from 2026 onward, so check the current agreement list rather than assuming last year's coverage.
• Licences - CC BY is the default expectation for openly licensed KI output; individual theses and monographs may carry a different licence, so confirm before reuse.

KI Press does not run a journal-style peer-review workflow. Quality control for its main output is the doctoral examination system: a KI thesis passes through a supervisory group, a formal pre-review (halvtidskontroll and the pre-dissertation review), an external opponent, and an examination board at the public defence. Monographs and reports are reviewed by the commissioning department, and practice varies by title - ask what review a specific volume received rather than assuming.

1. Talk to the library early. KIB handles registration, ISBN allocation, repository deposit and production advice; book a consultation before you set a date.
2. Register the thesis in the KI system and secure the ISBN - this must happen well before the defence, and KI publishes internal deadlines each year.
3. Format the manuscript. KI uses Vancouver referencing for medical writing; SciSpace hosts KI-compatible thesis and manuscript formats.
4. Deposit in KI Open Archive so the electronic version is available at the defence.
5. Produce the print run through the arrangement your department uses.

Research-integrity oversight at KI sits with the university and with Sweden's national system, not with a press ethics office: allegations of research misconduct are referred to the Swedish National Board for Assessment of Research Misconduct (Npof), and ethical approval for human and animal research goes through the Swedish Ethical Review Authority (Etikprovningsmyndigheten). KI's handling of the Macchiarini case in 2015-2016 drove significant reform of these national structures. KI Press is not itself listed as a COPE, OASPA or STM member - those memberships belong to journal publishers, and their absence here reflects the press's monographic scope rather than a quality signal.
