The International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) is a non-governmental international scientific organisation founded in 1910 in Vienna as the International Society for Photogrammetry (ISP); it added "and Remote Sensing" to its name in 1980. ISPRS is not a conventional publishing house. It is a society of national member organisations, and its publication programme is delivered partly through commercial partners (Elsevier, MDPI) and partly in-house through open-access proceedings series produced with Copernicus Publications.

That split matters when you are deciding where to send a paper. Two of the venues are regular journals with rolling submission; two are congress-linked proceedings series tied to ISPRS events such as the XXV ISPRS Congress in Toronto (4-11 July 2026). This guide covers the whole portfolio: what each venue publishes, open access and costs, peer review, and how to submit.

• ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing - published by Elsevier, the Society's official journal and its highest-profile venue. Subscription-based with a hybrid open-access option.
• ISPRS Open Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing - published by Elsevier, fully open access, four volumes a year.
• ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information (IJGI) - published by MDPI, fully open access, focused on geo-information science and its applications.
• ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences - established 2012 for full peer-reviewed papers from ISPRS events.
• The International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences - the Society's oldest series, running for over a century, carrying the bulk of congress and workshop contributions.
• ISPRS Book Series and the ISPRS eBulletin - monographs and Society news, respectively.

Both proceedings series are produced with Copernicus Publications and are indexed in Scopus and the Directory of Open Access Journals; the Archives and Annals are also covered by Ei Compendex.

ISPRS is unusually open-access-friendly for a society of its age. Three of the five main venues are Gold OA, and the two proceedings series carry no author-side charge at all.

Content in the Archives and Annals appears under Creative Commons Attribution licences (CC BY 4.0 since June 2017; CC BY 3.0 before that). Elsevier and MDPI titles use CC BY by default for open-access articles. Because the Elsevier journals sit in Elsevier's central pricing and agreement system, authors at institutions with a Read & Publish deal covering Elsevier may have the APC covered - check with your library rather than assuming.

• ISPRS Journal / ISPRS Open Journal - single-anonymised peer review managed in Elsevier's Editorial Manager, with an editorial board drawn from the ISPRS community.
• IJGI - single-anonymised review through MDPI's SuSy platform, with MDPI's characteristically fast round times.
• ISPRS Annals - double-anonymised review of full papers, organised by the scientific committee of the relevant ISPRS event.
• The International Archives - peer review organised by the event's scientific committee; standards and depth vary by event, so read the specific call for papers.

Turnaround differs sharply across the portfolio. The flagship journal runs on a normal journal cycle of several months; proceedings venues run to hard conference deadlines, with review compressed into a few weeks.

1. Pick the venue using the table above. If your paper is tied to an ISPRS event, the event's call for papers tells you whether it routes to the Annals or the Archives.
2. Read the venue's author guidelines. The Elsevier and MDPI journals each maintain their own guide for authors; the proceedings series publish an ISPRS author template and page-limit rules per event.
3. Prepare the manuscript in the correct template - the ISPRS proceedings template for Annals and Archives, or the journal template for the Elsevier and MDPI titles. Templates are available on SciSpace.
4. Submit via Editorial Manager for the two Elsevier journals, MDPI's SuSy for IJGI, or the event's own submission system for the Annals and Archives.
5. Format citations in the style the venue requires - ISPRS venues use an author-year reference style.

ISPRS follows COPE guidance on authorship, plagiarism, duplicate submission and retraction, and its commercial partners apply their own ethics policies on top: Elsevier's publishing-ethics framework for the two journals, and MDPI's research and publication ethics policies for IJGI. Because congress papers and journal papers can overlap, pay attention to the redundancy rules - a paper presented in the Archives can usually be extended into a journal submission, but the extension must be substantial and the earlier version must be cited.
