Founded in 2004 by robotics researchers, it has published more than 8,100 peer-reviewed OA books - overwhelmingly edited volumes in which each chapter is written by a different research group - alongside two fully open access journals. Its community counts over 103,000 authors and editors from 160 countries, and its content has passed 100 million downloads. The company is registered in London with editorial operations in Rijeka, Croatia.

IntechOpen matters to researchers for a specific reason: it is the publisher most likely to have invited you, by email, to contribute a chapter to an edited book. This guide explains how the model works, what it costs, how peer review is handled, and how to judge whether an IntechOpen chapter is the right outlet for your work.

• Edited volumes - the flagship format: a volume editor (an active researcher) defines the scope, invites and reviews chapters, and the book is published chapter by chapter online. Subject spread across the 8,100+ books: Physical Sciences, Engineering and Technology (~3,400 titles), Health Sciences (~2,600), Life Sciences (~1,500), and Social Sciences and Humanities (~600).
• Monographs and Compacts - single- or co-authored books, long or short form.

The two journals run conventional article peer review. IntechOpen is a member of COPE, OASPA, the STM Association, ALPSP, and the UN SDG Publishers Compact, and follows COPE guidance on misconduct and retractions.

2. Check the volume editor and scope. The editor's academic standing is the best signal of the volume's quality - look them up before committing.
3. Prepare the manuscript. Follow the author guidelines; chapter templates and the IntechOpen numbered citation style are available on SciSpace.
4. Submit via IntechOpen:core. The cloud-based platform handles submission, review, and revisions.
5. Pay the fee after acceptance. The €1,650 chapter fee (plus VAT where applicable) is invoiced only once your chapter passes review.

IntechOpen is a legitimate, long-established OA book publisher - its COPE, OASPA, and STM memberships involve vetting, and many chapters are written by credible researchers. That said, it attracts recurring criticism on two fronts: high-volume unsolicited email invitations to contribute chapters, and uneven quality across volumes because selectivity depends heavily on each volume editor. The publisher appeared on Jeffrey Beall's now-defunct list in its early years, a characterization disputed then and largely superseded by its membership record since. Practical advice: judge each volume individually - check the editor, the published chapters, and whether the book is indexed - and remember that book chapters generally carry less weight than journal articles in hiring and funding evaluations.

Indexing varies by title: selected IntechOpen books and chapters appear in Scopus, the Web of Science Book Citation Index, and subject databases, but coverage is not portfolio-wide. Chapters receive DOIs and are discoverable through Google Scholar, and the OA model drives strong download counts.
