Publication Guide

The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ) is Japan's national learned society for electrical engineering, founded in 1888 and headquartered in Tokyo, with roughly 22,000 members - mainly scholars and practicing engineers in electrical engineering and electronics. In 1991 the Institute reorganized into five societies - Fundamentals and Materials; Power and Energy; Electronics, Information and Systems; Industry Applications; and Sensors and Micromachines - and each society runs its own Transactions.

The portfolio splits along two tracks. The five society Transactions are hosted on J-STAGE, Japan's national platform for academic journals, and publish largely in Japanese under subscription access. The English-language track is anchored by IEEJ Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Engineering (TEEE), published in partnership with Wiley, alongside the fully free-access IEEJ Journal of Industry Applications on J-STAGE and the long-running translation journal Electrical Engineering in Japan (Wiley). This guide covers which venue fits your paper, the open-access routes and fees, peer review, and how to submit.

Which IEEJ venue fits your paper?

You're most likely to...Choose this route
Want an English-language, internationally indexed venue across all of electrical and electronic engineeringIEEJ Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Engineering (TEEE) - Wiley-published, hybrid OA, covers all five IEEJ sub-disciplines.
Work in power electronics, drives, motion control, or industrial systems and want free-to-read publicationIEEJ Journal of Industry Applications - the English journal of the IEEJ Industry Applications Society, free to read on J-STAGE.
Write in Japanese for the domestic research communityOne of the five society Transactions (Power and Energy; Industry Applications; Electronics, Information and Systems; Fundamentals and Materials; Sensors and Micromachines) on J-STAGE.
Want your Japanese-language Transactions paper to reach English readersElectrical Engineering in Japan - Wiley's translation journal drawing from the IEEJ Transactions.

What IEEJ actually publishes

Around ten titles in total:

  • IEEJ Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Engineering (TEEE) - the flagship English journal, published with Wiley since 2006. Scope spans fundamentals and materials, electric power and energy, electronics, information and systems, industry applications, and sensors and micromachines. Journal Impact Factor around 1.0.
  • Five society Transactions on J-STAGE - IEEJ Transactions on Power and Energy; on Industry Applications; on Electronics, Information and Systems; on Fundamentals and Materials; and on Sensors and Micromachines. Together these hold tens of thousands of archived articles going back decades.
  • IEEJ Journal of Industry Applications - the English-language, free-access journal of the Industry Applications Society, hosted on J-STAGE.
  • Electrical Engineering in Japan - Wiley's English translation journal of selected Transactions papers.

Open access and fees

IEEJ's open-access picture is venue-specific rather than a single society-wide policy:

VenueAccess modelAuthor fee
IEEJ Trans. on Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Wiley)Hybrid - subscription with an optional OA route (CC BY)OA option ~$2,630 / £1,750 / €2,170; no OA fee if you publish under the subscription model
Society Transactions (J-STAGE)Subscription; non-subscribers can buy single papers (~JPY 2,095)Society page/publication charges apply - check the Japanese author guidelines
IEEJ Journal of Industry Applications (J-STAGE)Free to read - no download charges for anyoneCheck the current author guidelines for publication charges
Electrical Engineering in Japan (Wiley)Subscription translation journalNot a direct-submission venue

Two practical notes. First, the Wiley-published hybrid titles are eligible under many Wiley Read & Publish (transformative) agreements, so authors at subscribing institutions may have the OA fee covered - check the ESAC registry or your library. Second, invited review papers in TEEE are published free of charge, and IEEJ individual members can read the full archive via My Page. Fees change - always confirm on the journal's current fees page before submitting.

Peer review

IEEJ uses single-anonymized peer review. Unless otherwise specified, submissions are reviewed by two reviewers. Author revisions are due within 3 months of the decision letter; later revisions are treated as new submissions. Papers and technical notes are normally 6 pages or less, with a hard maximum of 14 pages.

How to submit

  1. Pick the venue. English and international audience: TEEE or IEEJ Journal of Industry Applications. Japanese domestic audience: the relevant society Transactions.
  2. Read the author guidelines. Each venue has its own guide; TEEE's is on Wiley Online Library, the Transactions' guides are on the IEEJ site.
  3. Prepare the manuscript. Articles must be in English for the English titles; LaTeX and Word templates are available, and IEEE-style numbered citations are the norm. SciSpace hosts formatting templates for the IEEJ journals.
  4. Submit via ScholarOne Manuscripts. IEEJ migrated its paper management system to ScholarOne on April 1, 2025; the journal's author page links to the correct site.
  5. Respond to review. Return revisions within the 3-month window to keep your original submission date.

Ethics and integrity

As a 138-year-old learned society, IEEJ requires that submissions be original and not under consideration elsewhere, and applies standard publication-ethics screening across its Transactions. The Wiley-published titles additionally follow Wiley's integrity policies, including COPE-aligned retraction and correction practice. Check the venue-specific author guidelines for data and copyright terms - the OA route on the Wiley titles uses the CC BY license.
